Nah, swapped out to something more general. At the moment I'm studying commerce at UniMelb.

I thought about dentistry and the $$$, but to be honest the idea of staring into peoples mouths all day wasn't enticing. Plus my family and everyone I knew was pretty against it.

To those who had no direction in terms of their education before finding their place in the world and the career that was right for them, what did you do?

Have NFI what I'm going to do after high school.

Fair play. Play it by ear. Basically one of my main mottos in life. It doesn't lock you into doing something too specific immediately after high school

You're in the majority there. Even people your age you know who say they know what they want to do after school often discover that they don't really want to do that 12 months later, as did I.

I just turned 29 and i'm only now feeling like I'm heading in a particular direction and enjoying where its taking me.

I would say that these days it's a good idea for the majority of people to do something like uni or TAFE at some point for the sake of building a career.

But you don't need to rush into it. If you have no idea, it's probably brighter to work for a bit, get some real-life experience, travel and then try to figure it out. Also try to do reading to figure out what kind of things appeal to you. If you find stuff to read about that interests you, you'll have fun. You'll also start to get some kind of an idea as to what kind of career-path is best for you.

You could wait several years after finishing high school before starting to study. Nobody can tell you how to do it.

And like I say, even though some kind of post-high school qualification is a good idea for most people. Not everybody is this way. Some people end up starting businesses this way and have heaps of success. Others just find other niche careers. It takes a very special kind of person to do this. But they're out there.

One of my best mates is a professional magician. A seriously good one. He has no intention of studying. Granted, not many people have his unique skills but the point is he's making his career his way.

I'd say don't feel pressured into doing anything. Do it on your terms.

I'm just not ready to make these sorts of decisions yet. I'm barely keeping up with all my work as it is.

Don't worry Sammy, I can barely remember high school and I still don't know what I want to do when I've grown up.

Adelaide perhaps needs more football journalists. Or if you like football so much, volunteer at AU and make some connections.

Radio Host
Musician
Music Manager
Supermarket Manager
Auditor
Soccer Commentator/Statistician
Accountant

Chances are i'll not be doing Accounting in 5 years either

My grades aren't good enough for anything STEM-related. All my teachers keep telling me that I'm smart enough to do just about anything (if it weren't for my constant absences and procrastination), but I'm starting to doubt that's true.

You don't have to commit to doing anything yet (not even for years yet). And you can eventually get into something engineering-related or similar. There are always stepping-stone pathways. There are people who failed Year 12 who managed to get into one of those courses eventually. You don't need to go down that track now. But you can one day, if you want.

Don't worry about it.

I reckon you just try to find a job (retail, hospitality, call centre, whatever), save some money and to do some travelling. You can get a two year visa for a working holiday in the UK. What if, when you graduate, you get a job. Work really hard for like 6 months, maybe a year. Then go to the UK on a working holiday visa?

You'd have a great time and get life experience. You'd get to watch an incredible amount of football. You'd be working there so making money. And it's really a great opportunity because (I'm guessing) you wouldn't be tied down with study or family commitments.

It's a gutsy thing to do. But sometimes you've got to do that kind of thing.

dont sweat it. my advice. get a job and save some money so you can blow it on something good. by the time that's done you start to know what your into.

got any hobbies? interests? want to travel? whatever you do, go do something doesnt really matter what.

also - dont waste your time listening to teachers/etc tell you how to get into industries. when you find out what you want to do go ask people that acutally do it what to do and how to get where they are. ask their bosses who they employ. people are generally pretty happy to have this conversation. do this and you will save yourself plenty of mistakes.

agree with this. highly recommend working in a pub. meet people. have loads of fun. and generally you are around people - the punters - who actually want to be there. a lot of work places of full of people who hate being where they are and that's depressing to be around.

Survived the Revenue Law semester. Towards the end of it I was toying of doing the follow up subject this semester. I am not and happy that it is behind me.

Last semester of masters. Can't wait to get this crap off my plate and start earning money instead of losing it.

Problem is I want to get around to perhaps buying a house. With the way things look it seems it will take awhile to go till a house can be paid off so I would rather start sooner than later.

Im working currently. My jobs boring. Fell asleep 2 days in a row.

Question lads: I'm doing 4 subjects this semester (one of them being an elective), I'm wondering that if I drop said elective due to the unnecessary workload that will harm my chances with my more important subjects will that still count me as a 'full-time student' ie does 3 subjects count as 'full-time' as opposed to 4?

I ask because I'm living away from home paying rent and don't want my student payments lessened which will result in dietary deprivation

Full time IIRC is just 75% of a normal study load (which is 4 subjects) so 3 should still be fine.

Yeah pretty sure full time study is at least 10 hours a week which equates to 3 subjects.

I have to get my girlfriend keen too but she wants to be close to family. I love Northern Queensland. It's chill.

Make a family then she will be close to them ;)

People who go to uni and never pay back their HECS debt are what screws the system over time.

I know people complaining about paying their debt back through involuntary salary sacrifices (it's like $80/fortnight). It's as if they expect to pay their debt back when it suits them. The nerve of some people.
