All talk. Take some action.

Yep, that's why there hasn't been a huge swell in discussion on this very important topic that the Australian football community cares about deeply not just here but even on our Expand the A-League facebook page.

We're just all fatigued by the all talk, no action method of leadership.

Quit with the contradictory sound bites for whatever sounds good that day and get to work!

Exactly. Why is it that hard to draw up a sketch? It took far too long for a cup. It's gonna take far too long for a 2nd division and even longer for p&r. I'm sick of these mafia types running our game for the money.

I fear for future expansion they'll try and slap a team together in 12 months like WSW instead proper concrete plans for who's gonna come in

They have a Hundred Year Plan in Japan.

Let that sink in.

Gallop can't/won't see past the next sound bite.

Return of Queensland derby on FFA wish-list as part of planned A-League expansion

Marco Monteverde, The Courier-MailTHE return of an A-League Queensland derby remains high on Football Federation’s wish list as part of the competition’s inevitable expansion. In launching season 12 of the national football competition on Tuesday at Homebush, FFA chief executive David Gallop spoke of a desire to expand the A-League to 12 teams before the introduction of a second division, and promotion and relegation.Gallop would not put a timeline on when expansion would occur, saying the sport had to first strengthen itself commercially. However, he said a second team to join the existing Brisbane Roar in south-east Queensland was an FFA goal.Queensland last had an A-League derby in 2012, the final year of Gold Coast United’s three-season existence. For two seasons, the state had three teams – the Roar, Gold Coast and North Queensland Fury – with the Fury folding in 2011.

Brisbane Roar’s Henrique (left) looks to get past Gold Coast United’s Michael Thwaite during a derby match in 2012.

“South-east Queensland is an attractive proposition (for a second A-League club in Queensland), with the young population, the growth of that population, the football grass roots interest … (but) I wouldn’t want to speculate about particular areas within that region,” Gallop told The Courier-Mail.

While it’s bad news for the Townsville-based Northern Fury, who play in the NPL Queensland competition, Gallop’s comments should be music to the ears of the likes of current NPLQ clubs Brisbane Strikers, Brisbane City and Gold Coast City, and those supporting the establishment of a new team in the thriving Western corridor.

Gallop said a second Queensland team would also benefit the Roar, citing the example of the effect Western Sydney Wanderers’ introduction had on Sydney FC.

“Competition always lifts performance and we saw that with Sydney FC when the Wanderers came in,” he said.

Roar skipper Matt McKay would love to again play in a Queensland derby.

“I miss having the other two Queensland teams in,” McKay said.

FFA boss David Gallop with A-League team captains at the A-League season launch in Sydney on Tuesday.

“We’ve seen what a derby has done for Melbourne and Sydney.

“We’ve got great junior participation levels in Queensland and you see great players coming out of there – to have a second team would be cool.”

Gallop has been satisfied with the Roar’s off-field resurgence in recent weeks under managing director Mark Kingsman and clubs owners the Bakrie Group following another period of crisis during the short-lived reign of Daniel Cobb.

“I think we’ve certainly seen much more stability,” said Gallop, who will be at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night for the season-opening Roar-Melbourne Victory clash.

“It was a frustrating period of uncertainty around whether the current owners were going to stay in or go out, but it appears now that they are committed to staying in and that stability is a good thing for everyone.”

I'm all for a second Brisbane side out of the western corridor no doubt. Big growth area, big football following, a local derby with the Roar, would boost football in QLD overall.

A-League wants to expand but there’s no room for Tasmania

A-LEAGUE expansion is back on the radar but once again Tasmania remains the forgotten state.

And Football Federation Tasmania chief executive Mike Palmer says only a cashed-up white knight would convince Football Federation Australia that Tasmania can be a viable location for a franchise.

A-League bosses said yesterday the 10-team competition could expand within the next four years.

At the launch of the 2016-17 A-League yesterday, FFA chief executive David Gallop, and then the new competition boss Greg O’Rourke, said a possible promotion/relegation set-up was also on the agenda.

But it is believed locations such as the Sutherland Shire, south of Sydney, Geelong, Canberra, Townsville and Ipswich are most likely to be favoured as potential homes for future A-League bases.

Palmer said there was no reason why Tasmania could not be a successful A-League location, but it would require a significant benefactor to bankroll it.

“We would always be supportive of anyone who is wishing to grow the game in Tasmania, whether that is through an A-League club,” he said. “But that isn’t something we are pursuing and it’s something I think that the FFA wouldn’t expect us as a state body to pursue.”

Western Sydney Wanderers captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley at yesterday’s 2016/17 A-League season launch. Picture: GETTY

The Mercury believes that the annual costs of supporting an A-League club in the state have been estimated to be about $7 million to $10 million.

In the late 2000s, the state did throw its hat into the ring to secure a A-League licence with the establishment of the Tasmania United Football Club taskforce, which was even in discussions with mega-rich Ethiopian and Saudi Arabian Sheik Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi to finance the club.

But nothing eventuated from the taskforce and Tasmania has been largely ignored by the A-League since — adding to snubs from the AFL, AFL Women’s League and the NBL in recent years.

This is despite FFA’s Whole of Football Plan, released last year, saying every major Australian centre with a population of more than 500,000 had the market size to host an A-League club.

Rather than look to Tasmania — which has just over 12,000 people playing soccer each year — the FFA seems set to once again go back to the idea of a multiple team model in Queensland, despite thefailure of two of its threeattempts in the state.

But the State Government was noncommittal when asked if it would support a Tasmanian bid, with Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier Sarah Courtney, rather than Premier and Sports Minister Will Hodgman, responding to the Mercury’s questions.

“I’m certainly surprised Tasmania has not been included in the areas flagged by David Gallop for Football Federation Australia to expand into,” she said.

Opposition Leader Bryan Green said the State Government needed to do more.

“It is incumbent on the Government to get off its hands and ensure Tasmania gets back in the conversation should the A-League expand,” he said.

1 club out of 4?

NZ knights were not an expansion team. They were an NSL team that could work in the A-League.

They shouldnt be on this list.

And while Heart did not set the world on fire. They are still kocking about

What, you mean the Phoenix, who are still kicking being as competitive as any other team?

Other than Gold Coast and Townsville, which team is the problem for you

As far as I can remember, both Phoenix and WSW had the least amount of time to start out of the four new franchises, and funnily enough they are the onces that are still kicking goals.

Fury and GCU had what, a whole season, and they barely lasted 2

I think you're missing the point which is that the FFA should announce teams years in advance like the MLS do. Gives the team a chance to build hype and a fanbase. The fact that some worked out and some didn't should be reason enough not to try it again, because I definitely don't want to see another franchise fail.

I agree with the point. But my point is it does not need to be that. And that does not need to be the excuses either. NQF and GCU both had almost 2 years. And they failed.

Wsw and WP had less than 6mths and are both stil going.

Correct expansion is helped with time. But the proof is in the eating of the pudding. Its not essential. The FFA could easily still make successfull expansion for next season, in time for the next tv deal, if they really wanted it. They just need to be smart.

Apparently it is only 2-3years away for more expansion.

https://audioboom.com/boos/5137372-expansion-hopefully-in-2-3-years-a-league-chief

I think Perth and Brisbane would be the best locations. I know people will say PG and BR are still not settled and mature in those markets. But neither was SFC. And expansion did nothing the hurt them.

Really enjoyed that interview with the new boss, like the way he spoke.. Not going to get my hopes up too much but he seems like a very good fit.

I was talking to the new Brisbane CEO about expansion when he called over Greg.
He said "tell him where you want expansion"
I said "Shire blabla"
Greg said "are you from the Shire?"
I said "no"
Greg said "wont that dilute sfc?"
I said " its only 25% of their membership"
Greg said " they do a lot of work there with the junior blues."
I said "if you put the sydney derby on fta for 5 years kids wont ever change teams to Shire and you wont get a chance at it"
he said "Why do you want a team in the Shire?"
I said "I hate Sfc."

I liked him. He seemed alright. I was pretty gone but mostly kept it together.

I stayed away from that. Also stayed away from the ethnic argument.

I'm sure he hears and will hear all kinds of random shit from people all over Australia but I can't do anymore than tell the man my opinion to his face.

I liked that he pushed me for a justification of my thought instead of just rejecting what I was saying or a having pre set answer.

A-League boss Greg O’Rourke says expansion on fast track

A-LEAGUE boss Greg O’Rourke says expansion should happen as early as next year and claimed he will investigate why SA has just one NPL representative in the FFA Cup.

O’Rourke said new pros-pective clubs would be asked to submit reasons why they should be part of the expansion that leaves SA open to having a new derby partner for Adelaide United.

The new A-League boss, who was announced in July, revealed 12 clubs would be ideal. “I expect we will see expansion inside this next broadcast deal,’’ O’Rourke said.

“The last year of this broadcast deal is this season and then we start a new broadcast deal. My want is to bring in expansion of up to 12 teams inside that broadcast deal.”

The A-League did host 11 teams in 2010-11 but North Queensland and Gold Coast United could not be sustained, which fast-tracked Western Sydney into a 10-team competition in 2012.

O’Rourke said new clubs needed to put forward a football plan. “We actually haven’t pinpointed (an area for expansion),’’ O’Rourke said.

“I got asked yesterday whether or not we had a surgical plan in respect of whether we’re going to target a certain geography, whether they need a second team for a derby, or they don’t have an existing team.

“It’s fair to say we don’t have that sort of surgical plan.

“What we intend to do is put it to market and I have no doubt we’ll be oversubscribed.

“We already have received unsolicited requests for teams in Perth, Townsville, Tasmania and Far North Queensland and everywhere in between.”
