SPORT TV RATINGS FOR SATURDAY !!

1) NRL: Cowboys v Raiders (Fox Sports 333k)
2) NRL: Titans v Roosters (Fox Sports 241K)
3) NRL: Dragons v Panthers (Fox Sports 229k)
4) Cricket: Second Test/Day 1 (Fox Sports 167/207/224k)
5) AFL: JLT Series Dockers v Pies (Fox Footy 82k)
6) AFL: JLT Series Blues v Saints (Fox Footy 72k)
7) AFL: JLT Series Crows v Lions (Fox Footy 60k)
8) Rugby: Highlanders v Crusaders (Fox Sports 53k)
9) Rugby: Brumbies v Sharks (Fox Sports 50k)
10) A-League: WSW v Adelaide (Fox Sports 44k)
11) Rugby: Hurricanes v Rebels (Fox Sports 41k)
12) A-League: Wellington v Perth (Fox Sports 37k)
13) AFL: JLT Series Blues v Bulldogs (Fox Footy 31k)

Nos 7 and 13 aren't the JLT Series, they are Women's AFL.

It's pretty good that Nix v Glory got higher ratings than an AFL Women's game featuring two Melbourne teams.

Friday AFLW on FTA (I think channel 7?) rated 22k at 5pm and then 24k at 10pm, so obviously womens AFL is becoming a real FTA ratings winner.

Fox numbers, the replay at 10pm rated more than the live game at 5pm.

Obviously not a ratings winner (sarcasm noted), but for women's sport, AFL takes that as a win.

I just watched Velez beat Estudiantes 3-2 on my phone. It was a free live telecast on the website of tv publica, an argentine t.v network. Juan Manuel Martinez (older brother of Wanderers player) was pretty good in this match. Anyway, it got me thinking. For the A League, I think the 'split' between those watching on t.v and those watching on devices (phones, ipad etc) would be much less than other football codes in Australia eg. maybe 70% of the total audience watch it on t.v and 30% on devices, whereas the AFL/NRL might be 90% on t.v and 10% on devices. Now the only reason I'm saying this is the ease of watching those other sports on t.v (they're on free to air) and the demographics of older people watching say AFL/NRL who wouldn't like to watch on a device (it seems that the A league demographic is much younger than the other codes). Now what I'd like to know, is has the FFA or anyone quantified this? What is their strategy to maximise the digital rights now and in the future? Is there anywhere where the figures for 'livestream's on devices other than t.v's is published?

You do occasionally see them, Wookie sometimes finds them and puts them up on his site.

I know it's a popular view on this site, but it would be a  mistake for anyone to think that the A-League attracts a bigger digital audience than the AFL.

As for the value of those digital rights, I'm going off memory now, but I think part of the digital  rights are  included in the Foxtel deal, but they don't have exclusivity on the digital rights, the FFA can still get some additional value for them (although to date, we've heard nothing more on that front).,

This is a pretty good article by wookie on how hard it is to get digital numbers for any sport, but he has tracked down some numbers for the AFL and NRL.

According to MCN Digital in October 2015, h the AFL held the No.1 spot for sport brands on all mobile devices. The AFL Live App currently sits at over 3 million downloads – the most of any sporting app in Australia. NRL featured prominently with the No.3 Sport brand on smartphones and No.4 on tablet. Fox Sports, which recently added a new all-in one app, made its presence felt in market ranked the No.3 on tablet and No.4 on smartphones. On May 29th, 2016,
The Financial Review reported that  the NRL’s digital strategy, another area it lags behind the AFL. That was borne out in the latest Nielsen digital ratings figures released showed the AFL growing its unique monthly audience total in April by 22 per cent from the previous month to 3.9 million, while the NRL rose 13 per cent to 2.1 million.

do people think the ALeague would get better numbers on a primary FTA channel on a Saturday night? If promoted correctly and have a much improved production than SBS, then I think the answer is a definite yes.

Probably, but a primary FTA channel has to put up its hand to want to do it.  In all likelihood, the FFA would have to allow them to do it for free for 2 or 3 years before it saw any commercial return.

Fox will pay as I understand 3 million or make up to 3 million if they go FTA.

Not sure...but pretty sure. Seems the headline figure when the deal was announced was a "best case scenario" with the more reliable journalists (ie possessing critical faculties one usually desires in one's choice of reliable journalistic sources) like DD and BM being fed information that has progressively unpacked the original figure. This was DD earlier this month...

"It’s understood that the $346 million-dollar, six-year deal that FFA trumpeted in December already incorporates moneys that would be paid for expansion and the Free-to-Air component."

Am i right in saying the FTA cpart pf the TV DEAL will not be sorted until the Cricket deal is done? Which was sipposed to be done by now?

If so it is very stupid to make your negotiation dependent on the result pf someone else's.

Not only are we second fiddle, we act like a second fiddle organisation.

1.  The FFA didn't have a lot of choice in the matter, it's the FTAs who showed the FFA the door.
2.  It now transpires that the minimum guarantee Fox gave for the FTA sat night game is already included in the total broadcast deal, i.e.  there's only extra money coming from FTA if a broadcaster bids over $3 mill per annum (what Fox has guaranteed).  We pretty much already know that TEN will be the ones broadcasting that game, and given there close relationship with Fox, do not expect to see any additional money for the Sat. night game.

2.  It now transpires that the minimum guarantee Fox gave for the FTA sat night game is already included in the total broadcast deal, i.e.  there's only extra money coming from FTA if a broadcaster bids over $3 mill per annum (what Fox has guaranteed).  We pretty much already know that TEN will be the ones broadcasting that game, and given there close relationship with Fox, do not expect to see any additional money for the Sat. night game.

Thats actually right.

Foxtel own 15% of Ten.  Given Ten are montys to get the FTA rights, there is no chance there 'upping' the bid from Foxtels $3M.

We genuinely get the scraps.

I think I could be the odd one out here but if we go to 10 on their primary channel .... I would be over the moon... if we get 3 million that would be a bonus...

We have to prove we can rate ... FFS SBS rate less than Fox most weeks...

I got bored in the rain tonight and went back to TV Tonight every saturday night the A-League has been on this season.

I entered into a spreadsheet what is needed each week to make the top 20, top 15, top 12, top 10 & top 5 audience on Saturday night.

Essentially we need to prove we can draw an audience my guess over 275, 000 per week to ever talk about any serious revenue coming from FTA.

I think we can... as I also tracked on the same nights the ratings on Fox.

To make the top 20 varies between 1.9 and 3.7 times the existing Fox rating .

i.e. last weekend our top rating was 73K to get 275 K is around 3.7. where our best Fox rating of 142 k only needs an uplift of 1.9 times.

My spread sheet shows to make the top 20 we need an average uplift of 2.53 times the Fox ratings.

Two extra variables also impact the thinking.

1] Generally by being on FTA will increase Foxs ratings and being on a commercial should logic says lift Fox ratings ... although how much is a guess.

2} The games would be our best and these actually don't rate to bad.

However no one especially with limited ad breaks is willing to risk a big payout until ratings can be proven....

Herein lies a dilemma .....to achieve the best ratings things needed to be promoted .... so say we still have ten teams and still in argument over future structures with everyone insisting on their right to be heard and the constant slag off on FFA continues ... it cannot help but effect ratings and thus the size of the next media deal or the extra revenue if new teams come in... Conversely if we all keep quite would FFA become slower than they are now.

Its in all our interest to boost the league to help especially the first year ratings ... as ratings = revenue ... I guess at some distance point hopefully not that far away the various stakeholders can determine a way forward and we can start to promote the game ...

I think we have to expect that that will be the case.

Not because it's a poor product, or anything like that, but just the difficulty in selling traditional ad space means it's a bit too risky putting it on the main channel.

Having said that, Saturdays are pretty much dead TV time, so it's not completely out of the question that they might take a punt on using their main channel.

Ten has been the lowest rating channel for a very long time, so it all just depends on how they view the product, whether they see real growth in it, etc.

one positive about ch 10 is that they target a younger demographic, which is perfect for football really.
