So called 'journalist' (I use the term loosely) Susie O'Brien and unfunny so called comedian Dave Hughes. These 2 dirty little grubs are trying to make some cash off the Australia vs Saudi match without actually mentioning any of the football played. It disgusts me that these football haters have the gall to comment and call for the Saudi team to be banned over a non-football matter when they have no interest in the sport.
Here's a hint. Don't dare try to post any criticism of them on the Herald Sun website, as that will not get published. You know the old story, the paper controls the content and only publish readers comments that agree with their narrative. Just goes to show that there is no real news in the Herald Sun, but at least its a laugh to read.

You can add Peta Credlin to the list. Another football hater with a government background. Gee, maybe now I'm starting to see why football has been so massively underfunded when compared to other sports.

Are you seriously suggesting that the media is wrong in covering the story of the Saudi team showing disrespect during a minute's silence?

@ pippinu

Let me cut down your comment to "Are you seriously suggesting that the media is wrong" .... the answer is yes, the media is wrong when it comes to football. It is biased and agenda driven bollocks with more than enough proof in recent weeks that this bias is as strong as ever. So please don't defend these dickheads, they merely see it as a chance to tar football with their usual brush ...

So she wrote an article about the Canberra game in the Asian Cup when Iran and Iraq or when Australia played China and it was the biggest rating TV event in China ever... or when Australian played Japan and it was the most watched Football match in Asia ..

I understand where she is coming from but at the core of most arguments is Football.. does she excuse our game at all .... no the manner of the article indicates Football provides the opportunity to do such things...

Its the total lack of balance

Perhaps a frenemy-

It's about time Australian football got its priorities right

We might as well just give up and admit it: Australia is not a football country and it probably will never be.

I reckon we are a football nation. The thing is, we are also unique (Yes, we are) in the challenges we face. We have 3 other competitor football codes, and one other 'national' sport in summer when we playing our league matches. We have a history of an aggressive anti-football media who have recently made further investments in our competitor sports, and a strong undercurrent of racism within society that manifests itself easily in the criticism of the 'foreign' game of football. Despite all this, we have a professional national league, semi-pro state leagues, a national team that is a continental champion and good grassroots participation numbers. Yes, we have a lot of problems and yes we need more from FFA, but we are a football nation and the sport will only continue to grow here if we keep embracing that and shouting it from the rooftops. It's a fact that now that all of our sports are professional, there's a fight for sponsorship and fan dollars and and it's a code war out there at the moment and the other sports are doing all they can to keep us down.

I agree with this:

It is a major concern - almost embarrassing - that more Australian fans would pay to watch visiting teams in a friendly than their own national team in a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Real football countries do not do this: fans put their own team's interests first and care very little about the rest of the world.

Only in tin pot countries do more turn up to watch two foreign countries play a friendly than their own national team in a crucial WC qualifier (three times as many!)

I've always viewed these sorts of matches as a bit of an embarassment.

The funny thing is, we are one of the few countries where Brazil and Argentina have played each other in a non tournament environment (and have now done it twice). This suggests we are, indeed, a significant football country as 2 of the top 5 footballing nations chose to play each other here, knowing it would be a success.

We're a tinpot country when agenda-driven media compare football to football and decide one is a success and one a failure lol.

The Socceroos are averaging around 30k at home lately, from memory recent crowds have been something along the lines of 30k, 28k, 19k, 33k and 31k .... all of those would be acceptable at any test match bar Boxing Day, it exceeds all bar the All Blacks visiting in Rugby (which are played on a weekend as well), and it exceeds NRL internationals as well. So where is the problem??

Do SBS write articles comparing BBL attendances to the pathetic Sheffield Shield crowds? Thought not ...

The truth is we ARE a football country because 95,000 people turned out last week for two foreign teams, and because the Socceroos average 30k playing midweek which many codes would kill for, and because the A league attracts 1.7 million to a competition half the size of our competitors, and because people love to play our game, adults and kids alike.

The reason we have a thread with the title this one has, is because the media is full of dickhesfs who have no ability to analyse and reason or present a balanced view.

Best just add SBS to the list. I think this will be the first of many

This wasn't just "visiting teams in a friendly". It was Leo Messi, one of the best players of all time in his prime, here for the first time since 2007. I'd pay to see that.

I must applaud you though for using another football game to do your intentionally negative comparative analysis shtick. We all know you don't actually care about AFL and only use it in comparisons to rile everybody up.

Willfully ignoring context.

One is a perhaps once in a lifetime to see the top two countries with perhaps some of the best players ever who have a massive rivalry play in our backyard.

The other is a practice match before the Confederations Cup.

Apples and oranges.

As for the "tin pot countries" shill, here's an awkward truth: Brazil and Argentina also sold out 60k seat Emirates in 2006, while days before the English national team only drew 45k with almost half the capacity of Old Trafford left empty.

Apples and apples.

Very fitting to be addressing your concern trolling in this thread though, pips.

I honestly can't recall a positive FFA article from SBS in two to three years ...

Pretty much this. Frankly ignoring the blindingly obvious simply outs Micallef as a shrill looking for a sensationalist headline. Not a single mention of Messi despite the obvious fact he was the number one reason behind the massive turnout.

Like when 50.000 turned up at the G to see Paolo Rossi back in 83-84 (with the main difference being that  Rossi was a pretty ordinary footballer).

This is why when Pala or Joffa make a new tv 17/18 thread, which may be possible from July 1 or even today, it should state 11 aside.

He trolls and justifies it by thinking "it says Australian football ratings so I can write about footy."

Doesnt he just wait until the footy season starts then posts ratings from A-League and football matches the same day as AFL? then writes stuff about Peppa Pig?

Sure, he didnt produce the ratings....
