Aido's top 12 Westfield FFA Cup moments: part 1

With the Round of 32 draw next week (June 29, live on Fox Sports), #MagicOfTheCup tragic Aidan Ormond offers his 12-1 top Cup moments in the tournament’s fabulous three-year history.

12: Cahill has City in Cup dreamland

The legend delivered when it mattered most. Tim Cahill. The Man. The Australian great sprinkled some of his undoubted magic on the 2016 FFA Cup final with a moment of classic "Timmy Time".

The only goal of an intense 90 minutes against Sydney FC was trademark Tim, and you could really sense how much winning that trophy meant for City that night.

Tim Cahill scored the winner in the FFA Cup Final.

11: Mooy’s Magic of the Cup

Seeing a future English Premier League player at your local club in the FFA Cup? It’s just another reason to love the Cup and boy did the maestro Mooy put a show on.

His best was a two-goal masterclass against Edgeworth with a couple of sizzling set pieces in 2015 to sink the brave Eagles 2-1, who showed plenty of class in front of their home support at Magic Park in front of almost 2,500 fans in the Round of 32.

Melbourne City FC players celebrate one of Aaron Mooy's two goals.

10: Tuggies’ triumph in Tassie

Getting away with the lads and a professional preparation is a huge selling points for FFA Cup players.

Tuggeranong flew from ACT to a chilly Apple Isle and won an exhilarating penalty shootout in 2014.

"It'll go down in the annals of Tuggeranong history as one of the great performances," Tuggies coach Steve Forshaw said.

"To come all the way from Canberra, to play a very, very useful South Hobart outfit and to get the result, puts us in the final 16 of the national competition, the first one, so great effort.

Tuggeranong fans get behind their side when Melbourne Victory came to the ACT in 2014.

Speaking of Tassie...

9: A slice of cheese!

... off the pitch, the Cup gave new media faces a time to shine. Enter the entertaining duo "Gilly and Corndog".

Absolute local legends who came to national broadcasting attention during Tassie Cup games, they added to the football lexicon with this gem: “A slice of cheese (a yellow card).

Add a host of other colourful phrases ("right down the hey diddle diddle") that had fans jumping on the Gilly and Corndog bandwagon.

FFA Cup Tasmania

8: Hume’s heroics

Hume were the story of 2015. Their run in the early rounds were full of breath-taking stories as they went all the way to the semi-finals.

Victory stopped them, though. And one then unknown player was about to parlay his Cup run into a full-time A-League career.

His name? Jai Ingham. And who does he play for now? That's right. Victory.

Hume City

7: Naumoff’s screamers in Sydney Derby

Sydney United v Sydney FC. Old and new league heavyweights met on an absolutely brilliant night of football at a packed Edensor Park with Kiki Naumoff capped his night off by not one but two screamers in the Round of 16 clash in 2014.

Next week… 6-1! Which moments will make the cut? See you back here to wrap up the top 12 next week!

Round of 32 focus - Victoria

South Melbourne

Over the next nine days leading up to the Round of 32 draw, get the lowdown on which clubs are in from each of the nine Member Federations. The first cab off the rank – Victoria.

Football Federation Victoria (FFV) was the first Member Federation to determine their Round of 32 entrants back on 24 May.

The four FFV clubs in this year’s Round of 32 represent a heavyweight quartet in the PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria competition. All four have been in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds before, two of whom have previously reached the semi finals, and all four will have big aspirations of making their mark on the national stage in 2017.

Here is who will be lining up from Football Federation Victoria…

Bentleigh Greens #BGR

League: PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria

Home Venue: Kingston Heath Soccer Complex (301 Centre Dandenong Road, Cheltenham)

Website: bentleighgreens.com.au

Twitter: @BentleighGreens

Facebook: facebook.com/BentleighGreens

Head Coach: John Anastasiadis

How they qualified

Round 4
Bentleigh Greens 2 (Brennan 101’, Fry 120+2’)
Dandenong Thunder 0
After extra time

Round 5
Richmond SC 0
Bentleigh Greens 6 (Jack Webster 40’, Andy Brennan 57’/77’, Matt Thurtell 70’/74’, Kieran Dover 87’)

Round 6
Bentleigh Greens 6 (Ross Archibald 2’, Matt Thurtell 12’/36’, Andy Brennan 30’/41’, Trent Clulow 70’)
Morwell Pegasus 0

Round 7
Bentleigh Greens 3 (Troy Ruthven 34’, Matt Thurtell 71’, Andy Brennan 72’)
Green Gully 2

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Knocked out in Semi Finals by Perth Glory 3-0 at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex, Cheltenham

2015 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2016 - Knocked out in Quarter Finals by Melbourne Victory 2-0 at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex, Cheltenham

Lowdown

Bentleigh Greens find themselves in the Round of 32 for the third time in four years. Two 6-0 results in this year’s Preliminary Rounds were bookended by a couple of closer tussles as they needed extra time to get past Dandenong Thunder and were pushed by Green Gully before eventually prevailing 3-2 to reach the last 32. Matt Thurtell and Andy Brennan were the chief destroyers in the Prelim Rounds, the duo scoring 10 of Bentleigh’s 13 goals.

The team from Melbourne’s south became the first Member Federation club to reach the Westfield FFA Cup Semi Finals in the competition’s inaugural year in 2014 where they succumbed at home to Perth Glory. At the time of writing they were sitting third on the PS4 NPL Victoria ladder behind fellow Round of 32 entrants South Melbourne FC and Heidelberg United.

Heidelberg United #HFC

How they qualified

Round 6
Heidelberg United 3 (Sean Ellis 66’, Kenny Athiu 74’/76’ (pen))
Kingston City 1

Round 7
Northcote City 0
Heidelberg United 2 (Reuben Way 15’, Kenny Athiu 40’)

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2015 - Knocked out in Quarter Finals by Melbourne City FC 5-0 at Olympic Village, Heidelberg West

2016 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

Lowdown

It’s a second appearance in the Round of 32 for Heidelberg United after their previous venture into the Final Rounds ended at the hands of Melbourne City FC in the 2015 Quarter Finals at a packed Olympic Village, the huge crowd due in part to the hosts fielding Greece international Kostas Katsouranis as a guest player for the match.

The Burgers enjoyed a relatively smooth ride to the Round of 32, comprehensive wins over Moreland Zebras and Knox City was followed by a 3-1 win at home over Kingston City before a peach of a strike from Reuben Way and a Kenny Athiu header saw off rivals Northcote City to secure their passage.

Now back on the national stage, Heidelberg United will surely will be relishing another crack at a Hyundai A-League club. Their Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds scalps to date include Broadmeadow Magic from Northern NSW and Sydney United 58 FC.

Hume City #HCI

Moreland City 0

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Did not qualify for Round of 32

2015 - Knocked out in Semi Finals by Melbourne Victory 3-0 at AAMI Park, Melbourne

2016 - Knocked out in Round of 16 by Melbourne Victory 1-0 at ABD Stadium, Broadmeadows

Lowdown

Hume City have made it a third consecutive Round of 32 qualification after featuring in the Final Rounds in 2015 and 2016. And they’ve done it easy so far in 2017 with big wins over Langwarrin, Nunawading City, North Sunshine Eagles and Moreland City. 20 goals scored, none conceded in their four Prelim Round matches to date.

Remarkably, in all six of Hume City’s previous matches in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds they have been drawn at home. Only once in those six occasions have they not played at their ABD Stadium ground, that instance coming in 2015 when they hosted their semi final against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.

Last year Hume City’s campaign was again ended by Melbourne Victory, a Besart Berisha penalty the only thing separating the teams as they bowed out in the Round of 16. Now, with veteran captain Nick Hegarty again leading the charge and under the guidance of recently appointed head coach Ufuk Kubilayhan, Hume City will have their sights on another long Cup run.

South Melbourne FC #SOM

Round 7
South Melbourne 5 (Nick Epifano 2’, Milos Lujic 83’/87’/90+5’, Jesse Daley 90+2’)
Dandenong City 4

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Palm Beach Sharks (Gold Coast City FC) 1-1 (8-7 on penalties) at Cbus Stadium, Robina

2016 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

Lowdown

A proud club with a proud history, South Melbourne produced a comeback that will go down as one of the Westfield FFA Cup matches of all time, let alone the year, to reach this year’s Round of 32.

Staring at a 4-1 deficit against Dandenong City time running out, South Melbourne struck four times to prevail 5-4, Milos Lujic’s winner, which also capped off his hat-trick, coming in the final minute of stoppage time.

That win looks to have also triggered an impressive run of form in the league as at the time of writing South Melbourne sit on top of the PS4 NPL Victoria table after being in the relegation zone earlier in the season.

South Melbourne’s only previous match in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds ended in heartbreak when they were bundled out by Palm Beach SC (now Gold Coast City) 8-7 on penalties in the Round of 32 in 2015.

This sort of question is none of your business really.

I'm pretty sure it was a tongue-in-cheek comment.

I think for the general football fan, it's starting become clear who the bigger NPL teams are. A lot of clubs in the round of 32 that have been there in the past few years also.

Looking forward to getting out to a few games.

Round of 32 focus - NSW

Sydney United 58 FC

Some familiar names and some new to the fold – get the rundown on the clubs who are through to the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 from Football NSW.

This year Football NSW will have six entrants in the Round of 32 – their five allocated slots plus Sydney United 58 FC, who gained automatic qualification after taking out the PS4 NPL Final Series last October.

With the most number of entrants of the nine Member Federations, this year’s clubs from Football NSW comprise a mix of seasoned Round of 32 campaigners along with some chomping at the bit to be involved for the first time.

Here are the clubs who will compete in Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Final Rounds from Football NSW…

Sydney United 58 FC #SUN

League: PS4 NPL NSW

Home Venue: Sydney United Sports Centre (223-227 Edensor Road, Edensor Park)

Website: sydneyunited58fc.com

Twitter: @SydUtd58FC

Facebook: facebook.com/SydneyUnited58FC

Head Coach: Mark Rudan

How they qualified

Gained an automatic spot as the PlayStation 4 NPL 2016 Champions of Australia (winners of last year’s national PS4 NPL Finals Series).

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Knocked out in Round of 16 by Sydney FC 3-1 at Sydney United Sports Centre, Edensor Park

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 16 by Heidelberg United 2-0 at Olympic Village, Heidelberg West

2016 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Blacktown City FC 6-2 (in extra time) at Lily’s Football Centre, Seven Hills

Lowdown

Sydney United 58 FC is one of three Member Federation clubs (along with fellow PS4 NPL NSW club Blacktown City FC and FNQ Heat in Queensland) to have reached the Round of 32 every year since the Westfield FFA Cup began in 2014.

Heading into this campaign, the former NSL club will miss the playmaking ability and mastery of attacking midfielder Panny Nikas who recently left to play professionally in Thailand, but they still boast a host of quality personnel including former Hyundai A-League forward Matt Sim, who scored four goals for the Central Coast Mariners in a Westfield FFA Cup Semi Final against Palm Beach Sharks in 2014.

Their previous wins in the Final Rounds were against FNQ Heat (in 2014) and South Hobart in a penalty shootout in 2015, both of which were at home. Then last year they were on the receiving end of a remarkable Blacktown City FC comeback and one of the greatest Westfield FFA Cup goals last year when Danny Choi scored from his own half in a 6-2 extra time result.

With the luxury of not having had to play throughout the Preliminary Rounds in 2017, Head Coach Mark Rudan will have his charges determined to progress to at least the last eight as they are yet to get past the Round of 16.

APIA Leichhardt Tigers #ALT

Round 7

After extra time

Westfield FFA Cup history

First appearance in the Round of 32

Lowdown

Bundled out in Round 6 last year and Round 5 in 2015, APIA Leichhardt finally get their opportunity to prove themselves on the Westfield FFA Cup national stage. But it could well have been a different story.

After their first three Preliminary Round matches this year, which included a tricky away assignment in Round 6 against fellow PS4 NPL side and last year’s Round of 32 entrant Bonnyrigg White Eagles, they had yet to concede and seemed destined to take their place in the last 32 as they faced a home Round of 32 decider against SD Raiders, a side two divisions lower.

However, any thought of an easy ride to the Final Rounds proved to be anything but as, despite creating a plethora of chances, APIA Leichhardt found themselves 1-0 down deep into stoppage time.

On the brink of elimination, the home side won a penalty and converted it with the last kick in regulation time to send the game to extra time.

They then produced another miracle when Paul Galimi pounced minutes away from the match going to a penalty shootout to progress and add yet another magical memorable chapter to the Westfield FFA Cup.

The Tigers are currently enjoying a strong PS4 NPL NSW season, at the time of writing sitting second behind Blacktown City FC.

The balance of league and Westfield FFA Cup commitments will test their resolve but Coach Danial Cummins is sure to not leave any stone unturned in making the most of their first time back on the national stage.

Bankstown Berries #BER

League: PS4 NPL 2 NSW

Home Venue: The Crest Athletic Centre (McClean Street, Georges Hall)

Bankstown Berries 2

Round 6
Dulwich Hill 1
Bankstown Berries 2 (Andreas Vais, Daniel Fornito)

Round 7
Bankstown Berries 1 (Jake Bradshaw)
Sydney Olympic 0

Westfield FFA Cup history

First appearance in the Round of 32

Lowdown

One of the first clubs formed in Sydney having competed in the very first New South Wales State League as Canterbury FC, the Bankstown Berries are one of two Football NSW clubs in the Round of 32 from the second division of PS4 NPL.

Flying under the radar for much of the Preliminary Rounds, few would have kept track of the Berries’ progress as they were on a collision course with PS4 NPL and former NSL powerhouse Sydney Olympic in the Round of 32 decider.

But no one read the PS4 NPL 2 side the script as they stunned their more fancied opponents at The Crest, Jake Bradshaw’s second half goal proving the difference on one of the biggest nights in the club’s history.

Currently sitting 10th on their league table, the Berries will likely hold the underdog tag on whoever they draw in the Round of 32 but as Victorian club South Springvale proved in the first year, anything can happen once you are in the Round of 32.

Blacktown City FC #BLC

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Bentleigh Greens 1-0 at Lily’s Football Centre, Seven Hills

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by MetroStars 2-1 at Lily’s Football Centre, Seven Hills

2016 - Knocked out in Quarter Finals by Sydney FC 3-0 at Sydney United Sports Centre, Edensor Park

Lowdown

Blacktown City FC, like fellow PS4 NPL NSW club Sydney United 58 FC, are no strangers to the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds as they prepare to play in their fourth straight Round of 32.

The first two years did not go to plan as they were beaten at home by Bentleigh Greens and MetroStars at the first hurdle, before they enjoyed more success last year reaching the Quarter Finals where they were eventually outclassed but far from disgraced by a Sydney FC team that went on to win the Hyundai A-League Championship.

Despite the loss, last year’s Blacktown City FC campaign will largely be remembered for the amazing 6-2 win over Sydney United 58 FC, which saw Danny Choi’s wonder strike among one of four extra time goals after it was 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes.

Notably, Blacktown City FC have only ventured from their home at Lily’s Football Stadium once in their five Westfield FFA Cup Final Round outings to date, and that solitary occasion was when they played their Quarter Final against Sydney FC last year at Sydney United Sports Centre due to broadcast requirements.

Blacktown City FC have built a culture of success and the PS4 NPL 2015 Champions of Australia continue to be one of the benchmarks in the PS4 NPL NSW competition, where they currently sit on top of the table at the time of writing.

2015 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2016 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

Lowdown

Hakoah Sydney City East were forced to do it the hard way to qualify for their second campaign in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds after their first and only appearance back in 2014 when they were knocked out in the Round of 32 by the Gold Coast’s Palm Beach Sharks.

An easy first up win over Inter Lions, which saw Anthony Frangie record a five goal haul, was followed by two ‘heart in mouth’ penalty shootout victories against fellow PS4 NPL NSW and former Round of 32 qualifier Manly United and then Albion Park White Eagles, a match that finished 3-3 at the end of extra time.

But Hakoah Sydney City East undoubtedly saved their best performance until last as they shot out of the blocks early to defeat Rockdale City Suns 3-1 away from home to book their spot on the national spotlight.

Coached by former Scottish international Gavin Rae, who has played in the Scottish Cup and League Cup, the lads from Hakoah Sydney City East will take heart from his experience and knowledge of what it takes to compete in and win cut throat matches. One only has to look at the results and the steely resolve Hakoah has shown up to this point to know they will be a dangerous opponent for whoever they draw in the Round of 32.

Westfield FFA Cup history

First appearance in the Round of 32

Lowdown

The team based 48 kilometres northwest of Sydney’s CBD join Bankstown Berries as the other non PS4 NPL top league club from Football NSW in the Round of 32.

The Brumbies managed to avoid facing a PS4 NPL opponent on their way to the Round of 32, and while it is sure to be a big step up come the Round of 32, there is no doubt that come game time under the big lights of the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds, they will be ready to relish the occasion.

Futsalroos captain Greg Giovenali is the most recognisable name in a squad that has proven through the Preliminary Rounds to have no shortage of goal scoring options, although Nikolas Dimitriadis and Peter Cejka have both featured regularly on the score sheet.

With 25 goals in their four Preliminary Round matches while conceding eight, regardless of who Hills United draw in the Round of 32, you can be certain that they will not die wondering and will back themselves to score more than their opposition.

I have been mucking around in my free time making the current home kits of all teams featuring in the Ro32 of this years cup.

I was going to post them as matchups once the draw happens and I still most likely will, but seeing as there is going to be a lead in to the draw with a state by state focus each day I figured I will contribute.

Here is yesterday and todays.

Does anyone think that with expansion being such a hot topic there will be some convenient matchups for the FFA to test the waters?
For example, some combinations that would be interesting fixtures:
- Brisbane Roar getting Gold Coast City, Moreton Bay United, or Peninsula Power
- One of the QLD teams getting an A-League team
- Olympia (Tasmania) getting an A-League team
- South Melbourne getting an A-League team
- Canberra Olympic getting an A-League team
- One of the WA teams getting an A-League team
- One of the Sydney NPL teams getting a Sydney A-League team (very likely)

Obviously probability suggests that at least one of those will happen (especially a Sydney derby match) but it certainly seems like good potential. A similar thing happened last year when Wollongong Wolves (at the time one of the most vocal expansion options) got the closest possible A-League team (Sydney FC) in a home match to draw a crowd of 8000+. Could see something similar happening this year, particularly with a team like South Melbourne.

I think that only 4 A-League teams will play NPL in the r32 because of the rigging. Open draw would give better odds for your match ups.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the guaranteed A-League v A-League matchups to ensure that enough NPL teams get through each round.
Still, I'd be unsurprised if we see some fixtures like South Melbourne v Melbourne Victory, Gold Coast City v Brisbane Roar, and Sydney United v Western Sydney.

I just dont understand it.

Last year there were 10 AL v NPL games. These are the games the fans and  NPL players want. FFA could seed all AL teams to play away in the rd 32 that is 10 matches direct. Play a regional r64 you get perhaps 18-20 games before r16 then probably 3 more (having npl winner enter at r64 or 32 above).

Round of 32 focus - WA

Western Knights

For the first time a Western Australian club from outside the PS4 NPL has qualified for the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32. Get the lowdown on this year’s two Football West entrants.

A club preparing to make their debut in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds has joined a club that is back in the national fold for the second time after getting a taste of the Round of 32 back in 2015.

In the three years of the Westfield FFA Cup’s existence, no Football West club has made it past the Round of 32. Could this be the year? WA’s two Member Federation entrants of 2017 will be hoping so.

Here is who will line up in the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Final Rounds as the best from the west…

Sorrento #SOR

League: PS4 NPL WA

Home Venue: Percy Doyle Reserve (Corner Warwick Road & Marmion Avenue, Duncraig)

Website: sorrentofc.com.au

Twitter: @Sorrento_FC

Facebook: facebook.com/sorrentofc

Head Coach: Jamie Harnwell

Sorrento

How they qualified

Round 4
Sorrento 10 (Sean Canham 21’/67’/80’, Scott Bulloch 26’/31’/48’/86’, Scott Witschge 53’/84’, Jacob Shore 62’)
Woodvale 0

Round 5
Sorrento 3 (Reece Vittiglia 39’, Sean Canham 69’, Scott Witschge 84’)
UWA Nedlands FC 1 (A.Kretowicz 54’)

Round 6
Wanneroo City 0
Sorrento 2 (Alex Morgan 4’, Reece Vittiglia 64’)

Round 7
Sorrento 1 (Sean Canham 8’)
Dianella White Eagles 0

Westfield FFA Cup history

2014 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

2015 - Knocked out in Round of 32 by Sydney FC 2-0 at nib Stadium, Perth

2016 - Did not qualify for the Round of 32

Lowdown

Over 3,000 turned out at nib Stadium back in August 2015 to see Sorrento go down 2-0 to Hyundai A-League outfit Sydney FC in what is the Gulls’ only previous appearance in the Round of 32.

Now they are back in the Final Rounds after qualifying through WA’s Preliminary Rounds. Following a massive first up victory over Woodvale, the Gulls overcame three State League sides – UWA Nedlands, Wanneroo City and Dianella White Eagles to progress.

In Sorrento’s Cup run to the Final Rounds, Sean Canham has proven a formidable force, finding the back of the net in all but one match, his tally including the winner against Dianella White Eagles in the Round of 32 decider.

But Canham is not alone when it comes to goal scoring avenues, and under the reins of former Perth Glory captain and defender Jamie Harnwell, they are sure to also show a resilience in defence.

At the time of writing the Gulls have also been finding some good form of late, defeated just once in PS4 NPL WA since the start of May.

Western Knights #WKN

League: State League Division 1

Home Venue: Nash Field (Solomon Street, Mosman Park)

Website: westernknights.com.au

Twitter: @WesternKnights

Facebook: facebook.com/westernknightssc

Head Coach: Trim Morgan

How they qualified

Round 3
Olympic Kingsway 0
Western Knights 3 (Paul Lloyd 15’, Adriano Jelenovic 28’/71’)

Round 4
Western Knights 14 (Brian Patterson 10’/20’, James Burns 15’/18’/32’, Paul Lloyd 38’/77’/88’, Ryan Haslett 22’/43’/56’, Adriano Jelenovic 25’/51’, Jack Rycroft 66’)
Bussellton SC 0

Round 5
Western Knights 3 (Paul Lloyd 76’, Jack Rycroft 82’, Adriano Jelenovic 86’)
Wembley Downs 0

Round 6
Western Knights 3 (Jack Rycroft 8’, Paul Lloyd 60’, Ben Coulter 81’)
Perth Soccer Club 1 (N.Sabatini 41’ (pen))

Round 7
Bayswater City 1 (B.Griffiths 2’)
Western Knights 2 (Adriano Jelenovic 21’, Paul Lloyd 90+1’ (pen))

Westfield FFA Cup history

First appearance in the Round of 32

Lowdown

State League Division 1 club Western Knights created history as the first non PS4 NPL WA to reach the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds.

Adding to the Knights’ accomplishment is that their spot among the other 31 clubs from around the country who will take part in the Final Rounds is no fluke and more than deserved.

The club, which was established in 1968, eliminated PS4 NPL sides and former Round of 32 entrants (Perth SC and Bayswater City) to qualify.

Paul Lloyd has been a constant on the score sheet, the number 10 finding the back of the net in all of the Knights’ five Cup matches so far this year, including the stoppage time penalty against Bayswater City to send them into the Round of 32.

Regardless of the opposition, any team that scores 14 goals in a Cup game and has claimed two prized scalps on their way to the Round of 32 will not take a backward step once the Final Rounds come down.

Adelaide City v MetroStars - road to the decider

Adelaide City v MetroStars

Football fans in South Australia are counting down the days until Adelaide City and MetroStars face-off for a spot in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32.

As is the case every year, it hasn’t been a straight forward passage for either team to this year’s decider – including a dramatic last minute winner and a penalty shootout.

Relive each side’s path to Saturday’s Final below.

Adelaide City

Round 1
Adelaide City 7 (D. Smith 7’, 52’, 87’, 89’, C. Armiento 25’, M. Kamara 50’, OG 69’)
Adelaide Cobras 0
Adelaide City Park

A five-goal second half in Round 1 set Adelaide City on their way in Cup Football for 2017, this was perhaps new signing Dylan Smith’s best game during his spell for the Black and Whites before moving to Green Gully in Victoria. Youngster Carlo Armiento scored the goal of the game in the 25th minute – rifling home from outside the area.

Round 2
Adelaide City 4 (M. Kamara 35, A. Costa 37′, 57′, D. Smith 83′)
White City 0
Adelaide City Park

City were favoured to progress through a second home tie against a side in a lower tier of South Australian and they turned in another professional performance. Two goals in each half saw Damian Mori’s men advance to a massive Quarter-Final task.

CLICK HERE for the full story.

MetroStars

Round 1
MetroStars 3 (C. Pascarella 3’, L. Wooding 57’, 85’)
Adelaide Olympic 3 (C. Pounendis 7’, 29’, 31’)
MetroStars won 4-3 on penalties.
TK Shutter Reserve

MetroStars were very nearly bundled out of the Cup at their first hurdle! A hattrick to Adelaide Olympic’s Christos Pounendis had shot the visitors ahead in Klemzig before a second half fight back spearheaded by Liam Wooding forced extra-time and the lottery of a penalty shootout. The home crowd advantage proved the difference as Isaac Carmody in goals brought his side over the line.

Round 2
Cumberland United 1 (F. Marafioti 22’ (pen))
MetroStars 5 (M. Dawber 3’, 6’, 16’, 59’, C. Esposito 54’)
A.A Bailey Reserve

A fantastic hattrick within the first 16 minutes from Matthew Dawber expelled any thoughts MetroStars had of their Round 1 clash as they dispatched Cumberland United 5-1 away from home. Dawber added his fourth whilst Esposito continued his knack of popping up with a goal on a regular basis. This one was over with a half hour remaining.
