Perhaps a frenemy-It's about time Australian football got its priorities rightWe might as well just give up and admit it: Australia is not a football country and it probably will never be.http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/blog/2017/06/12/its-about-time-australian-football-got-its-priorities-right

Just read the article. My god, SBS has really gone downhill.

Fool me twice? Sure, let's bid for the Women's World Cup in 2023

87 reading now

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice, shame on me.

Fool me both times using taxpayers' money and I reckon you have a political embarrassment in the making.

I refer, of course, to the announcement by the Turnbull government on Tuesday that Australia is not only going to bid to host the 2023 Women's World Cup of Soccer, but that the government will put up as much as $5 million towards it and ...

And yes, I know. You are recalling what happened last time the government backed such a proposal, putting no less than $45 million to try and host the 2022 World Cup. You're recalling that all Australia got for its trouble was complete humiliation and only so many votes as you could count on the fingers of one finger! You're remembering that instead of us, the bloody thing went to Qatar, one of the hottest countries on earth, with no large population to provide fans, no developed infrastructure to host games or soccer fans from other countries, and no politically stable environment. A terrific piece in the Herald at the time – and as a matter of fact I wrote it – called it "the most obviously corrupt sporting decision of all-time".

And now, just half a decade later, we are going back to FIFA, asking them if they will play nice this time, and consider our proposal on its merits, not on who greases whose palm for votes?

Sports Minister Greg Hunt, apparently, is convinced they're all honest now, and I am not making that up!

"I am satisfied on the advice we've had [FIFA is clean]," he said.

Really, Minister?

Advice from whom?

FIFA themselves? Or someone else? Can you tell us?

Did you talk, perchance, to new FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who last year sacked his ethics team, and not in a good way. Or did you talk perchance to FIFA's £1million-a-year general secretary, Fatma Samoura, the woman who the Guardian reported a fortnight ago, was "in charge of FIFA's internal austerity, and found by auditors to be spending £22,000 of FIFA's money on having her home cleaned five-times a week. Fifa says Samoura repaid the sum, "when she discovered the issue".

Or did you even talk to Australia's own, admirable, Moya Dodd, who was on FIFA's council until recently, when she was replaced by a woman who couldn't even name the current women's world champions! Does any of that sound to you like FIFA is now running a clean operation?

Minister, please. Prime Minister, you're kidding. This is a nonsense, and an obvious waste of money.

This is not an attack on the worth or otherwise of women's soccer. This year, particularly, will be remembered as the one where women's sport in Australia leapt forward in leaps and bounds, as so many other sports try to catch up to the hugely successful AFL women's comp.

By all means spend that money on Australian women's sport. Double it, triple it, quadruple it. There'll be no complaints from anyone, and it will be money well spent. But put it into grassroots development where there is a guaranteed return to the citizenry, and best of all to the junior female citizenry. Putting it towards persuading the virtueless FIFA as to our own virtues, is a hopeless, embarrassing, waste of time – and taxpayers' money.

Or did I mention that?

@Peter_Fitz

Ah Fitzy, you gotta love him.

What a great line:  A terrific piece in the Herald at the time – and as a matter of fact I wrote it – called it "the most obviously corrupt sporting decision of all-time".

Not only is football besieged by many enemies, far too many to count, I note that this morning on the Roar, Spiro Zavos has written about rugby's enemies.

Im putting Cr Jolly on the list, not that this person is confirmed an enemy but they did you the "just a couple of Aussie larrikins" line

Victoria Park streakers: Men charged after Community Cup event incident

THREE men in their 20s have been chargedafter streaking at a community football game in Melbourne.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Anita Brens said four people ran on to the field naked at the Sunday Community Cup event at Victoria Park on Sunday.

“Police and security ... are making inquires as to the identity of the fourth (man),” she said.

“Those arrested will receive penalty notices.”

One of the men takes a naked swig of beer while streaking at a footy game on Sunday. Picture: Supplied

Victoria Police spokesman Sergeant Adam West said the men were charged with indecent and obscene behaviour, which carries a $626 fine.

Mr West said the men would receive a penalty notice.

Socialist Yarra councillor Stephen Jolly said the charges were “over the top” and “a sensible approach” was needed.

“It was just a few people having a bit of fun and now their lives could potentially be ruined,” Cr Jolly said.

John Ballis, chief executive of Reclink, which runs the Community Cup, said the quartet’s actions were not acceptable.

“Under no circumstances would we condone streaking at any Reclink event, which includes the Community Cup,” he said.

Drawing more than 10,000 people each year, the Community Cup hosts a football match as well as a rock and roll concert that raises money for charities and community sport.

Just not Aussie rules'

ABC Grandstand commentator Gerard Whateley described the incident as "extraordinarily rare".

"I can't recall being at an AFL game where that's happened before," he said.

"Whenever it happens in the round-ball code there's huge pressure on the club involved and on the governing body to make a stand.

"It's especially dangerous if you do see the set-up [of the standing area] where people are crowded shoulder-to-shoulder."

Jameson agreed with Whateley's assessment, saying it was "just not Aussie rules".

Flares have been associated with poor crowd behaviour at A-League matches, with Football Federation Australia taking extra steps to get rid of them from the game.

The hypocrisy of the mainstream media in Australia..
Any crowd issues / flares etc a A league games... It's typical soccer fans and is part of the games  culture..

Racism , fights , bananas , flares , sex scandals at AFL.... No its not the game , its modern society and in the case of the flares, its now a security ground issue... WTF ???

Offsiders on the ABC has not talked in anyway about Football in the last four weeks... even with the two  Arsenal games drawing over 160K in four days they did not mention them.

They talk up women's [sorry netball and cricket] sport but never mention the Matilda's V Brazil  ...

Since they coped in it the neck over how they farked up the Liverpool game they say very little now...

Offsiders has always been run by Aussie Rules stooges. Football and RL/RU stories are always ignored or barely touched on as those are the sports AFL followers are most afraid of.
Unless of course it's a negative story in which case they spend half the show talking about how it'd never happen in their game...

Who was the last Australian Prime Minister to attend a Socceroo's game? They all claim to be fans of AFL or rugby clubs.

Gough Whitlam attended the Australia vs Uruguay match in 1974.

Even thought they don't really care about sport, they still go through the farce of pretending to be a Carlton supporter, or whatever. They must be desperate to win votes in Victoria.

Not as rare as Whately thinks... there have been flares at SANFL matches, especially Central Districts, in recent years.
