Australia win 3-1. Great result. Well done Peter Cklamovski. Stream wouldn't load in the second half.

Great stuff, Vietnam has always given the Aussies problems over the last couple of years.

The coaching change seems to be working too.

There is some photos and news about the game now. Geez they are big lads for 15 and 16. Kid up the back with the full grown beard looks very hipster. I reckon some of these kids will be under pressure for MRI wrist scans etc. good to see FFA sticking with the biggest kids are the best policy.

Here's Sporting's profile on him. All it has is his birthdate and that he has Italian citizenship.

Is there a team sheet with the players numbers and names on it anywhere for the Joeys? Would like to actually know which player is which.
Thought number 8 was very good against Cambodia, same with our left back number 17 though he looked a bit nervy at times. Would be great to be able to put numbers to names.

Unfortunately, whoever played left back for Australia was culpable for the Vietnamese goal.

He was shoulder barged off the ball in a 50/50 he lost, then his opponent turned him and it split the Oz defence open.

Great stuff, Vietnam has always given the Aussies problems over the last couple of years.

The coaching change seems to be working too.

I thought the first half was pretty even and that Vietnam had too many early half chances on goal. Australia playing the attacking midfield triangle of the 1-4-3-3 with only one  DM didn't help.

Mongolia is a lot cooler than tropical Asia at this time of the year. The more temperate  conditions probably helped Australia to finish the game stronger in the last 30 mins when they scored all the goals, than when they play Vietnam in tropical Asia. Ulan Batar is a more neutral venue of both teams.

I thought  Vietnam playing an effective 4-4-2 flat midfield in Ball Possession Opposition, and something like a three quarter press in the early stages of the game.  They effectively tracked the two Aussie attacking midfielders pretty well, closing them down repeatedly, dispossessing them, or forcing them to play bounce passes backwards.

As the game progressed, the Vietnamese DMs weren't as effective at sustaining the off the ball impetus. The Aussie AMs were able to turn and face forwards more as they received.

I'm not sure what the rationale is for why the national teams now constantly play with one DM and two AMs in an attacking midfield triangle version of the 1-4-3-3? In the past it was a defensive midfield  triangle with two DMs and one AM. In the same game it would be good to use both strategies.

Only one Oz goal was scored in open play. It was a decent finish from good positioning from whoever scored the goal from a low cross on the right.

Aussie chances on goal were more frequently created in the second half.

One thing that improved as the game progressed was that the Aussie attacking players maintained the ball for longer, without turning the ball over.

Some individual players showed more composure in keeping the ball under pressure in individual actions in the attacking third. Conversely in the first half, Australia had a lot of possession and too much play in the Oz defensive half.

Agree with the formation set up, I think playing one holding midfielder puts the team into a lot more pressure when they lose it.

I also thought there were many times we played a lot of straight balls into the feet of the two No.8s in front and at times to the wide players and many times they lose due to pure pressure from the defenders in front, they don't play with enough movement to receive the ball in angles so they can use the ball efficiently.

I would also like this to see not just this team but all youth teams vary their formation during the game from 4-2-3-1 to a 4-1-2-3 depending on the scenario of the match and opponent.

Must be part of Ange's philosophy in believing the only formation would do the trick on the day.

Thanks Z. Hopefully we can get to see it soon. From my reports we dominated the game v Qatar but just found it hard to brake down the defensive block. They did also score 2 great goals. apparently the Ref was a joke but don't want to make excuses. Game v Croatia and japan might be a bit more open and structured so will be interesting to see how we go.

Not surprised. Australian youth often dominates in poss and attack but struggles with breaking down compact defence in the final 3rd.

IMO it is odd though - we do often have very good individual attacking players who can break down individuals. Maybe IQ/decision-making is an issue? Team synergy? Formation? whatever it is, only way to learn how to deal with this is by playing through it so great experience and preparation for the boys. Kudos to Ufuk and team on getting the lads the opportunity.

U19 Boys went down 2-0 to Croatia over night. Apparently we played them off the park only conceding the 2 goals in the last couple of min in the game. Once again we had our chances but couldnt convert a problem we are seing from top to bottom. Positive is that we can match it with the best at this level from my reports. Japan next which will be a challenge also. Great tournament for the boys to be in and credit has to go to the FFA. surprised they haven't advertised the fact.

Why does it happen to all of our teams? We can dominate the possession can't create many chances and when we do we don't the have the quality final pass or shot to finish it off.
And when that happens teams find a way to score from us in defensive transition as well, frustrating to say at least.

What does it tell for us, the lack of quality? The coaching aspect or something else? Something has to be done to fix this problem going forward if we want to complete at the top level.

we actually tend to generate enough chances

it just doesnt feel like many because it takes a 3-4 shootable moments for a player to take a shot and when they takes a shot it takes about a dozen before one goes in

Against the best teams the chances will be limited to a few, against weak teams we can create plenty but often the final touch of finish is glaring to see but we can get away with it.

Is it as simple as more practice in front of goal? Is it down to technical education from our junior coaches? Could it be a mental thing? It has to be something along these lines as it just seems that the OS teams (at most levels) will score 1 out of 2/3 chances.

I don't think the ntc emphasizes finishing very much. Given our history though its not just the ntc to blame. We probably need to import some specialist expertise to correct this

no national program can be succesful without finishing

We have to question the current development system, maybe there seems to be too much emphasis on team development and the playing style and less emphasis on individual technical development.
