Believe it or not Bluebird, smaller the stadium the less the expenses are. You'll make considerably more profit filling out a 20k seat stadium than filling 20k in a bigger stadium. Not to mention it looks a better product which means more viewers, which means more money in a tv deal.

SFC and MV have better deals in the bigger stadiums. Adelaide pay considerably more for hindmarsh

Its not just the venue rental, but also the cost of building the thing

And which of these small venues have high ratings? The club determines the ratings, not the venue. 70% of this is said to come from Syd and Melb

Sounds like a lot of guess work in your post. Just like the guess work by people who said being on a commercial network will give higher ratings

Of course they have better deals because they play there about 3-5 times a year and it is far from guess work that smaller stadiums have less expenses and i have an entire world of evidence to support that if you so wish. Do you think South Melbourne playing out at Lakeside are going to get more profit getting 10k at Lakeside every week or 10k at etihad or Aami park if they were hypothetically in the league. As would the Roar if they could find a more suitable stadium themselves and every possible new team which could join the league.

Also less empty seats makes the game more marketable, it'll also make the experience of going to a game more enjoyable and generally the more marketable sand enjoyable something is demand will increase the only question is by how much.

There are also many more problems which are more serious than this, but for certain clubs which may not be in the league yet or currently are need venues which will help them be sustainable. It is just common sense.

But what happens when a team grows? Do they knock the stadium down and build a bigger one?

And who pays for these stadiums where the only ROI is better looking games on TV?

Look at how the AFL went about the West Sydney situation. They had a 10k stadium. They demanded a 25k seater while the opportunity for funding and development was there

10-15 years down the track they have a perfect venue

No idea, as most of the stadiums in the US are mostly privately funded normally with some government help in the form of tax breaks...

I am not sure the AFL's ability to get governments to build them stadiums is a good example as most stadiums in Europe and the US are in the main privately funded.

I do know the MLS is expanding to 28 teams by 2020 I think, there is one decided and 5 to add and they have 13 bids in of which 3 bids are very weak and maybe 6 to 7 are strong .... the stadiums they are saying they will build vary from 20K too 30k ... so I guess is that is were the US market is about.

Yeah but nah, SydneyFC

Empoli average crowds of almost 10k in a 16k stadium.

He’s just pointing out the bleeding obvious, we’re putting similar crowds into stadiums 2 or 3 times that size.

Many people have said it in the past - we need boutique stadiums.

Shouldn’t be shooting the messenger - and especially not shooting him ignoring the facts behind what he’s saying.

And Florence has a team of it’s own - but again it’s funny how people say The Gong should have its own team and not be expected to support a new Southern Sydney team but somehow people then think people in Florence should not follow their existing home team and go for Empoli instead.

It’s twisted logic - football is established in Italy, it’s not Australia where fans are more “sports fans” than soccer fans and drift between big games in each code. European football culture is one where you follow your team not your neighbours.

Spot on! Having lived in Florence, let me tell you that anyone living in the city or in the near vicinity lives and breathes Fiorentina. However outside of it, if you don't live in the actual cities/towns themselves, supporters will tend to support either of the Milan clubs or Juve. There is absolutely no chance someone from FLorence would support Empoli unless they grew up in the heart of Empoli town. Again, they would either go for Fiorentina or the big clubs.

So you have to take the population factor into account. So with a population of 46,000, their crowds are solid. Wouldn't say fantastic, but certainly much much MUCH better than Wellington etc.

CCM playing on a Friday night is always going to be tough, especially when Sydney are on too.  Having them play in Sydney on a Friday night would probably work better for the commuters

2nd highest crowd for Mariners on a Friday night in 5 years except for Xmas/New Year games.

After all variables are taken in to account, all crowds are added together and it's one year v the last. We're down1,600 per game at the same point last season. The sugar hit derby crowd at homebush only accounts for 1,000 of it.

I think we will end up at 11,500-12,000 by year end.

I mention this with no idea how it would impact the figures... it could make them worse.

Seems to me the best time for crowds is Saturday night, followed by Friday night for a capital city teams, Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, Thursday night.

What would happen if we played two say 7:50 matches on Saturday night at the same time....

How will effect ratings, assume both down but maybe up overall in that say the two matches got 65K each or 130, and the single Saturday match may have got 75 with 40K for the Sunday night... it could be close ...

Having replays after as well ...

Not give the broadcasters as many spots....

Wonders aloud if it pure madness or worth considering...

So in order to (hopefully) boost our crowds, we take a game away from Fox, watch the ratings of both competing games go down, and then get less money from Fox in the broadcast deal.

Yep, can't see whats wrong with that at all.
