Said it 1000 times. What made the derby so sought after was the small stadium at Parra meaning the SFS derby was the only chance for many to attend.

Ah so it's the stadiums fault thousands arent showing up.

But that doesn't explain the 60k that went last season. It is undeniable that interest in the league this year is an all time low. Even the Melbourne derby was low

It doesn't help either when the two teams are at opposite sides of the table

First derby at ANZ in round 1, lots of hype, etc. I was there and despite the 4-0 win and large crowd the atmosphere was lacklustre compared to SFS or Parramatta. It honestly feels as though the derby hasn't had the same spark since that game.

I don't disagree with you though, there is a disinterest in the league this season that has been steadily brewing over the last few years.

Are you seriously suggesting compact venues don't increase demand due to the better atmosphere?

Agree with 1987s assessment of the derby. There was not hype of interest in it anymore. Hasn't been for the last few encounters.

The decline is quite a worry.

One club that appears to have bigger crowds is Perth this season. The data may not support my perception, but the crowds in Perth seem bigger on TV.

The game was on the Gold Coast so it was always going to be low, even at Suncorp against the Nix Brisbane probably would have only got just over 10k.

Perths average last season was 10,533, so far this season it is 11,211 so your perception would be right Decentric.

Even city fans are struggling to believe 7k were at aami park yesterday, they went for the kids free angle again, possibly in reaction to Cahill leaving.

A-League tickets much more expensive than Big Bash League

Entrance to A-League games is more expensive than attending a Big Bash League match, with general admission tickets up to 90 percent more pricey.

A-League tickets much more expensive than Big Bash League

The cheapest adult ticket for every BBL regular season match is a flat price of $20, while kids can be admitted for as little as $5.

However, to buy a general admission adult ticket for Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park on December 28, it will set you back a whopping $38 - and the cheapest junior ticket is $12.

De här superbilarna delar en hemlighet.

Interestingly, the least expensive adult ticket to watch Victory play Perth at the same venue on January 13 costs $29 - revealing a significant drop in price from their previous home match.

While the Big Bash keeps their ticket prices at a fixed level, the A-League seems to fluctuate depending on whether it is a holiday period or not.

Other A-League ticket prices include Sydney FC charging $35 for an adult to watch Friday night's game against Melbourne City, while viewing Western Sydney Wanderers' New Year's Day match against Melbourne City will cost $34.

A-League crowds have dropped significantly over the past few weeks with only one match out of the 10 games in rounds eight and nine attracting a crowd of 10,000-plus.

Only 36,433 attended Saturday night's Sydney derby at ANZ Stadium - a match that pulled 61,880 people at the same venue in October 2016.

CA subsidises ticket prices for the BBL doesn’t it. Great strategy but how does football copy that?

I'm not entirely sure Waz but to me it's fighting a losing battle.
When I look at advertising boards around town and see Renegades x4 game membership from $44 I can't help but be impressed.
I don't even like cricket but it seems like such a good value for money deal.

If it's $20 to go to a BBL game then they will literally blast us away in attendances. I'd almost say footballs equivalent to the BBL is when the European sides tour in pre-season friendlies.
It's the glitz and glamour but at the end of the day nobody truly cares who wins the game, the crowd just wants to see some entertainment.

The issue for A-League tickets is it's too expensive for 'casuals'. I don't even bother trying to convince friends & family to go to games anymore because I couldn't justify paying $35 for a one off game against Perth or Newcastle myself so how can i convince someone whose only a casual observer of the league to do the same?

Yup - we are pricing ourself out. Appreciate the need to pay for the rent but building an attendance base is more important.

@ Aussie Pride

Agree with all that. Full season memberships are pretty good value at football but that doesn’t get your casual fan in. You can get $20 tickets via Telstra Thanks for all HAL games but they are limited and not everyone is a Telstra customer.

The BBL is losing money for CA and has been structured to be a success in the ground and on TV, which it clearly is, with the goal of securing a bumper tv deal - which it failed to do and had to postpone negotiations several months. A good deal it will get but the warning signs for all codes are there, the tv money is not an endless pot of gold.

So comparing what cricket can do price wise for tickets and advertising and other promotion is pointless, Cricket, AFL and NRL are in a different league. The moment Gallop opened his big mouth and said “we can be No. 1” we got compared to the big codes and that’s now hurting us when it’s an irrelevant comparison.

If it were just about cheaper tickets then kids go free round would be packed; and if ticket prices were keeping fans away then tv viewing would be growing.

Sadly Football lacks a marketing narrative and has done since the early few seasons; core fans don’t need that as they’ll go/watch any way but everyone else does. That’s the competitive nature of the market - you want a family of 4 thorough the gates you’ve gotta earn it. That’s where the marketing of the A League has lost the plot and needs a reset.

A League clubs have for a few years now been picking their fans up, turning them upside down and shaking them hoping some loose change falls out.

I think we are finally seeing the results of this especially now BBL has provided family summer entertainment competition in the last few years.

We are down to the hardcores and it wouldn't surprise me if they have to raise prices more to compensate.

Exactly. I haven't been able to convince friends to come to games for a few years now. These are guys that would have come to 3-5 games a season with me every season. Now they will maybe come to a game vs Victory....maybe.

I have said it for so long that anything more than $25 (including booking fee) is too much for general admission for the average casual fan. Anything above that price people stop to think whether it's worth the money or not and let's face it, most of the time it's not.

16,000 at Etihad on Friday.

I know we've been shit recently, but I struggle to remember times where we'd go below 20k there, and I would guess that would be against teams like Newcastle or Wellington.

This has to be seen as a fail. Not a school or work in Sydney night. Best time slot.
Against a team that brought some fans. CCM also in the top 6 and playing attractive football.

Can we put the "we need a Saturday night game" myth to rest?
