This has to be seen as a fail. Not a school or work in Sydney night. Best time slot.
Against a team that brought some fans. CCM also in the top 6 and playing attractive football.

Can we put the "we need a Saturday night game" myth to rest?

While I agree it's a terrible figure, there's no doubting the Saturday arvo/night fixture is the preferred timeslot for the Mariners.  Sunday afternoon perhaps, Fridays are no-gos.

10,225 Brisbane vs Melbourne

I'd wager that is the lowest attendance for this fixture.

The median attendance has now dropped below that of the entire 11/12 season and we haven't had the fixture fatigue stage of this season. Get ready folks this isn't going to be pretty. Will be nudging the 09/10 and 10/11 levels. As in, lowest of all time.

But if this what we need to see the governance changes then fucking bring it.

See this is the problem. There is no assurance that the crowds will return.

No games to cull. No NQF and GCU to scrap. No WSW to introduce. No more bigger games to be stacked at the start of the season. No broadcaster to blame and run away from

This is going to take some real thinking

While I agree it's a terrible figure, there's no doubting the Saturday arvo/night fixture is the preferred timeslot for the Mariners.  Sunday afternoon perhaps, Fridays are no-gos.

Its not panic stations but FFA or hopefully a future independent A-League needs to think outside of the box. Why not have a game 11am on Saturday in Gosford? it doesnt get that hot does it? Is there a coastal breeze?

We are stuck with what we have for 6 years. If the expansion happens it will most likely mean a late Sunday or Thursday game every week. Which will be good for tv viewers.

They imo should have over lapping matches on Fridays, 7.00pm and 7.45pm start.

The broadcasters have no problem with 12:30 sunday in AFL. They do a double header 12:30 and 3:30 on fox, with a 3rd FTA game overlapping half of each.

Why don't Perth ever play Friday nights at home?

I think they could get more viewers. Friday usually has good viewing numbers. I would recommend when the 2 Sydney & Melbourne teams play they do this.

By the time the 4th game comes around on a Saturday and it is Perth people don't seem to stick around as much to watch. Friday may give more of a flow.

When the Friday game at the moment is a stinker then it slow momentum for the next day. This is talking for people who watch multiple games which may be more than team supporters.

Edit; this is the attendance thread, maybe a Friday night game in Perth could get some hype. Is it the same night as Wildcats play?

I was thinking on this. The big bash comparison is a little bit different as it is a once a year event that lasts for a month. You are not getting dedicated fans you are getting festival goers a bit like those who jump aboard the World Cup. How does the A-league emulate this? The only thing i can think of is the A-league finals. These games sell out and get alot more media attention. Probably a good reason to keep the finals.

Eminem's concert sold out. My friend has a pub band and the place was practically empty

Its possible the BBL is killing the A League due to the format or structure or because its not a real sport and there is something wrong with those who watch it
Its also possible that we can just copy it like we do the AFL and NRL and people will turn up to our game in great numbers (or we can blame SBS if they don't)

Its also possible, and this is a bit of a stretch so stay with me here, that people are more interested in cricket here than they are in football

When was the last Finals game to sell-out ?

Probably THE final.

I feel the A-League had something very similar in the early years.  8 teams, short league time, brilliant marketing, Dwight Yorke.  Felt like an event.  Very similar to the BBL just without the 2 teams in the biggest cities from the beginning (and no crappy NZ team).

The BBL works because it is such an event, and what's more it's BUILT UP and MARKETED as something huge.  Players who don't even play in the test squad are gods.
"Come see Chris Linn smash a hundred off 20 balls!"
"Shane Watson's still around!  Come see him before he retires!"
"Kevin Peterson and Dwayne Bravo are here!  You all know these guys!"

The challenge is for the A-League to find our equivalents, and then have the players back it up on the pitch.

The "stars of tomorrow" scoring 30 metre goals (and having media behind them)
Cahill smashing in headers every couple of weeks
Marquee household names still in their prime
Big Dukes and Harry Kewell as commentators giving the game credibility (Bit of a stretch but trying to align to what the BBL is doing).

As I write this I also remember back to when David Beckham came with LA Galaxy.  The more I thought about it, sure he was a hit with the ladies (which anyone who is good looking could do), but it wasn't just to see him play.  Rather, it was to see him "bend it like beckham" from the dead ball.

It's watching Timmy score a header
It's watching Bresciano statue it up in the goal
It's watching Lukaku arrogantly stand there like a muppet with his arms spread
It's watching Wayne Rooney score because of his love for this home club
It's watching Messi nutmeg a bunch of n00bs.

The FFA needs to make the public care about the players in the A-League the same way the BBL makes people care that Kevin Pietersen might still be relevant at 37.

That sort of thing is not sustainable though. That model of manufacturing interest means customers are only caring if you bring something to the table. That something is costing more and more money as inflation takes hold of world football. You need them to invest all the time. What you have is consistently buying marquee players. We now have to compete with China and India as well as Japan and South Korea. Not even mentioning the fact of the US and Russia.

If you think pro/rel is unsustainable marquees for a player at mid 30'S is playing Russian roulette.

To top the above post off we don't have a transfer market or a loan system to make up the gaps of an inflating football market.

You need big clubs and small clubs, the big clubs bring in marquee players and star players and the small clubs develop exciting youngsters. The small clubs average crowds of 10 000, 20 000 when the big clubs come to town and the big clubs average 20/30/40 000.

You need more clubs and less restrictions.

It's not hard, is it? Really fucking simple to comprehend. Not mentioning the smaller clubs pay lless in stadium costs, have generally a better atmosphere and can be more appealing to the 'casual' fan.
