He could fit there if we played a defensive back 4, but if it’s a coach where there is any requirement to get forward or show skill in possession, forget it.

I watched a replay of the game and his passing was better than what I expected. He's not going to bomb forward or put any in crosses in, but he did make some useful runs and put in some decent forward passes. If we have Behich playing high all the time on the left, it might not be a bad thing to have a more defensive minded RB to keep numbers at the back. My only worry is whether he has the positional sense to play the position well enough consistently at international level.

Interesting, but I doubt it has a lot to do with Pasquali's situation as he's just edging the Jong side now.

Well we could just allow behich to go forward then wright can just stay back and the CDM drop deep to make a back 4 then this would allow leckie to play further forward. Weird he has played a lot at RB, maybe he realised his socceroos status might improve being a RB.

Twice as many: 14 at RB and 7 at CB this season according to transfermarkt, although he seems to have played CB much more often in previous seasons.

I  assumed they play in the second division and it doesn't seem they do? Moofa what division does the Jong team play in?

4th tier. Dutch youth teams were only integrated into the tier system last season (apart from Ajax and PSV) with the top going to the second tier and the rest below. Groningen was the top team to be in the 4th tier. Now under the second division Dutch football is amateur but I would more than less call it semi-pro. In the second tier all players in have to be on professional wages, below the second tier this isn't required but are still payed. I wouldn't say it is good football but it does show him moving through the youth teams.

For anyone who missed the game here is highlights of Martial and Pogba which you can see generally how Wright played. Since it is focusing on the United players it doesn't show Wright on the ball and makes him look slightly worse than he actually played but you can still see a lot of his movement. His second half was better and I thought he managed his side of the pitch well. At 11:25 you can see him follow Martial really into the centre of the pitch before swapping with a midfielder to get back into position. He did this a couple of times and often limited Martials ability to get between the lines to find space which could be useful with virtually all teams running inverted wingers. If we were to move to four at the back and out left backs generally being quite attacking he would be a decent option as a defensive fullback. doubt he would get as much help from his winger though.

The Wright at RB is an interesting option. We've got so many attacking left backs you could always play a pretty lopsided 4-2-3-1 where Wright is a defensive RB letting Leckie at RW focus on attacking and stretching their defence. On the left you could play someone taking a more central role and letting the fullback overlap like the Ninkovic/Zullo left side of Sydney. Or could go just a generic wide left option like Kruse.

Furthermore someone like Wright at RB and an attacking LB allows you to also transition into a back 3 with Leckie going to the RWB occasionally if the game required it.

Millwall defender: I have a point to prove against Derby County – I definitely could have played in Championship for Rams

Millwall's James Meredith and Aston Villa's Robert Snodgrass battle for the ball

Millwall’s James Meredith has a point to prove when he returns to Pride Park this weekend – a decade after Derby showed him the door, writes Ben Kosky.

The Lions’ left-back was playing junior football in Melbourne, Australia at the age of 16 when Derby invited him to travel to the other side of the world and join their youth academy.

But Meredith’s dream of representing Derby’s first team never materialised and he dropped into non-league football after the Rams decided to let him go.

Ten years on, he finally has the chance to play first-team football at Pride Park when Millwall tackle Gary Rowett’s promotion contenders on Saturday.

“I’m really focused on this weekend because I feel like I’ve got a point to prove, more to myself but also to people at Derby,” said Meredith.

“At the time I was 19 and it was difficult to take.

“I thought I could definitely have played in that team in the Championship, but obviously if you don’t get the opportunity you can’t show that.

“After being released by Derby, I ended up in the Conference North and built my way back up over the years, so it’s nice now to be where I feel I deserve to be.

“Despite that, I loved my time at Derby – I thought it was a great club to be at and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the crowd there at last.

“I used to love watching games at Derby when I was coming through. It was my first experience of English football and that was a dream for a kid coming from Australia.

“But I’m absolutely loving it at Millwall – things couldn’t be better and I’ve tried to prove this (level) is where I should have been in the first place.”

Meredith’s belated first appearance at Derby would certainly be all the sweeter if he can help the Lions to finally break their duck in terms of away wins.

Along with Birmingham and Bolton – the bottom two in the division – Millwall have yet to taste victory on the road in 11 Championship attempts.

“It’ll be a tough place to go – Derby are a good team who play good football,” said Meredith, whose route back to the second tier took in spells at Shrewsbury, Telford, York and Bradford, before he joined the Lions in the summer.

“We need to get that elusive away win. I think we play better against the big teams – especially, of course, at the Den where the atmosphere intimidates the opposition.

“We’re stronger at home, on the front foot, and we need to be similar away from home. The away performances have been solid, but they haven’t had that bit extra.

“I like the momentum we’re starting to build now and I think we can pick up a lot of points over the Christmas period and also in January.”

Meredith has been an ever-present in the Championship so far this season – and he is optimistic that consistent performances may catch the eye of incoming Australia coach Graham Arnold.

The 29-year-old has won two caps for the Socceroos and is hoping for a chance to stake his claim to be part of their squad at the World Cup finals in Russia next year.

“I’ve not been part of an Aussie squad in a tournament yet, but I’d love nothing more than to be involved with that,” added Meredith.

“Hopefully playing for Millwall I’m going to be in the shop window and I’ll be given an opportunity – and then all you’ve got to do is keep your spot.”

Testspelaren får kontrakt

© Nya Åland
FOTBOLL. IFK Mariehamn har skrivit kontrakt med en av testspelarna som besökte Åland tidigare i december.

Det handlar om den australiensiske vänsterbacken Dylan Murnane, fostrad i Melbourne Victory (A-League).

http://www.nyan.ax/sport/testspelaren-far-kontrakt/

It is on Åland which is the chain of islands between Sweden and Finland in the Baltic. It is Finland but the speak Swedish there. At one point the Russians have controlled the islands also.

They use to be good in Finland. Not sure now but their owner or sponsor was a betting company guy. I remember Ath Madrid went there for a friendly when he sponsored them. I think HJK have been the best in recent years though.

Yokohama are through to the cup final, Degenek wasn't in the squad. Winners get an ACL group spot.
