Adelaide will never get an upgrade to hindmarsh or a new rectangular stadium for football under a state labour party
they are beholden to the AFL.

Case in point , the city council and the state govt want to upgrade the tennis precint next to adelaide oval, when they dont even have an international tournament earmarked for it nor does the current venue actually get used on a regular basis.

Bone’s beef: Forget AFLX, club cup comp a knockout idea to win over a new legion of fans

AFLX is coming.

It’s the Australian rules version of T20 cricket. Or is it?

It’s certainly the AFL’s attempt to crack into the “short form” market but the question is have they got it right?

For me the answer is no. Clearly no.

Of course, that’s without a ball being bounced — or thrown up — but at this early stage, I don’t get it.

Cricket is the pacesetter and the sport everyone is trying to catch when it comes to abridged versions of the original game in order to capture a new audience.

T20 cricket has been a sensation all around the world. It’s great for players and for spectators. Everybody wins.

The huge crowd at an Adelaide Strikers match at Adelaide Oval last year. Picture: AAP Image/David Mariuz

The game is done and dusted in three hours. Forty overs in total for a possible 20 wickets and around 300 runs. More action. Less time.

So successful is it, the ICC is contemplating reducing the length of Test matches from five days to four.

More action and less time! Winner.

Every other sport wants a piece of what cricket has.

The AFL has chosen AFLX.

Less time and less players but not necessarily more action.

A smaller ground. A shorter game. Some new rules but that’s about it.

I’m not sure football can find a different way, a better way or even an alternative way.

International Rules hasn’t survived the initial novelty.

Soccer has never found an alternative to its game but it has found an alternate competition.

The FA Cup has been the “Golden egg” for English soccer and is starting to have a similar impact here in Australia with the FFA Cup.

It is only new but the different format appears to be working. The game is the same but the opposition is different.

Amateurs against the professionals, and it can produce the odd “Cinderella” story.

Current Time0:00
/
Duration Time2:25
Loaded: 0%
Progress: 0%
Quarter final highlights

That’s the AFL’s hope. And it has been tried before. The Fosters Cup. The Escort Cup. The Foxtel Cup.

Tried but never persisted with. It may be time to try again.

There are around 140 football leagues in the country.

If a minnow made it through from the very start they could play nine games in total.

The AFL’s top four might have to play three.

The doomsayers will say “no way” (more likely in a much harsher fashion) but if the sport is to grow, all options must be tabled.

If the round ball game is mature enough to do it why not Australian rules?

Shorter games. Different venues. New opposition.

Why not?

The game for the people and by the people can be taken to the people.

AFLX has its merits but it feels like a game for the kids.

A great place to start but that’s where it stops.

Even more reason why the FFA should ignore what the NRL and AFL do - they're already looking at our code with envy. The problem is, that our own top brass can't see that we're in the driver's seat when it comes to what direction our game needs to take.

In fairness I agree with his point, but what he's forgetting is AFLX is simply part of AFL's militant approach aimed at destroying other football codes, both here and overseas.

Allianz Stadium in the mix for AFLX but clubs in dark

Sydney's Allianz Stadium – better known for hosting rugby league, rugby union and soccer – has been discussed as a possible venue for AFLX games next pre-season, but club football departments claim they are in the dark about the league's exact plans for its new format.

The AFL on Thursday revealed the fixture for next year's pre-season JLT Community series, with each club's games cut from three to two, seemingly to create space for a series of AFLX events, of which it has been mooted three will be held, one in Melbourne, one in the northern states and one in either Adelaide or Perth, with clubs split across the three venues.

Gary Ablett could face his former side in March.

Gary Ablett could face his former side in March.

Yet the league still wouldn't confirm that the carnivals would take place, with AFL general manager of clubs and broadcasting Travis Auld telling fans to "watch this space" ahead of a likely announcement, understood to be next month.

Key football department figures at several clubs have expressed frustration about the lack of clarity surrounding AFLX, which is played on a rectangular field with seven players a side and 10 minute quarters. Concerns have been raised about how clubs can plan for their pre-seasons given they don't know what the requirements of AFLX will be.

It's understood there has been interest in holding one of the events at Allianz, the rectangular stadium next to the SCG. This would be a potential win for the AFL, who have had troubles making an early-season splash in the northern states due to limited ground availability, with the SCG and the Gabba bound by cricket commitments. That issue came to a head this year when the Brisbane Lions were denied the chance to host the AFLW grand final at the Gabba, with the match held at Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium.

As expected, the pre-season series was cut to just 18 games, down from 27, with Auld saying the league had sought feedback from clubs, the AFL players association and other stakeholders before reaching that decision.

"We think we've struck the right balance with two [games per team]. Some clubs may decide to play a practice match outside of this," Auld said.

The games will be played over a 16-day period, again with a focus on regional and suburban venues. Etihad Stadium won't host any matches, freeing the ground up for other commitments, while Ikon Park will host a pair of Wednesday night games under lights. All matches will be broadcast live on Fox Footy.

The most talked-about game is likely to be the Gold Coast-Geelong clash in Townsville on March 4, which shapes as the first chance for recently returned Cat Gary Ablett to take on his former club.

There is only one JLT series Friday night game, and unlike last year, no games will be played as double-headers with AFLW, with the league aiming to give the women's competition plenty of clear air. The AFLW fixture will be released on Friday - with the season to begin in the first weekend in February - while the men's home and away fixture is due next week.

On AFLX , Auld was coy. "We're not really in a position to finalise both the format and when we might finalise AFLX games or a carnival, but we'll certainly come back to it when we are," he said.

"It's just a new product [and] new products take time to develop."

"We want to make sure the format's right, that our clubs have bought into the product and the journey and what we're trying to do with it.

"Where is the right slot for it? What is the right time to introduce it? All of those things are getting worked through.

"There's certainly no need to hurry it."

The AFL's football operations boss Steve Hocking flagged the likely introduction of AFLX on the league's website earlier this month.

Why the fuck are all of you obsessed with talking about the AF fucking L?

It struggles to recreate the almost cult-like following in QLD and NSW that it has in the southern states. We all know it's a plastic fucking sport for retards. And it will never gain any significant traction outside of the country as the AFL and its broadcast and corporate partners do not even have 1/20th of the clout the NBA or NFL and its broadcast and corporate partners do.

Kill this thread.

Jackson said the newly devised concept AFLX could further strengthen the AFL's international ambitions and could help unearth new talent.

"I love the idea of [AFLX], particularly when you go into areas in Sydney and the eastern coast where there a lot more smaller grounds," he said.

"I think it's a great idea in principle. It's something that can be adopted overseas if you wanted to."

A Victorian AFL club should be moved interstate, or overseas - Wayne Jackson

manager of China David Stevenson is looking to have the new format launched beyond Australian borders.

"Absolutely (that's our goal)," he told afl.com.au.

"I think there are two reasons for that. One is we're targeting at kids and families, that's our primary audience. That's why we have a shorter format, 10-minute halves, high scoring, lots of active play in that time. It's targeted at young kids, which will work in New South Wales and Queensland, as well as China and India.

"The second reason is logistically, in those (international) markets, there are no venues. In China as we found there are not a lot of venues that are oval. In India, it's a little easier as they play a lot of cricket, but in China it's harder.

"Some part of New South Wales and Queensland there's a lot of rugby and soccer fields, so AFLX could work there too."

It will most likely be like the Port thing. They can send 6 teams, 1 from each state, and try to get more sponsorship money. There is also the media they generate for themselves in Australia.

It may be easier to watch for the people in the crowd. If you dont know the rules, its over in 20 mins and you would be much closer to the field (ball).

It may just develop into a yearly trip to showcase the sport, which isnt actually the sport.

Geez I hate it when the LA times says "soccer" You'd think the Yanks would know by now there's a gold medal in the Olympics for football but zilch for soccer.
Their women have won the gold medal for football too, but they can't seem to get it in their head that their Chuck & Run game is more like Red Rover than football

Patrick Dangerfield suggests 34-game AFL home and away season for fixture equality

Under the AFL’s current draw format and broadcast rights agreement, the home and away season lasts 23 weeks.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast on Monday morning, Dangerfield said he wouldn’t mind cutting the season to 17 games, where every team would play each other once.

But the 2016 Brownlow Medallist added that he’s also concerned the AFL might cut the players pay if they decrease the number of games per season.

“I don’t mind it, but if you said to the vast majority of players if it’s going to be a 17-week season, if you’re going to cut the season by 20 per cent, we’ll cut your pay by 20 per cent. I don’t think too many would put their hand up and say yes to it,” Dangerfield told SEN.

The Geelong superstar suggested the prospect of a 34-round home and away competition, which would see quarters cut to help manage players’ durability.

“I think 17 games make sense purely because it’s fair. The other alternative is what if you play 34 games, but instead of 120 minutes of footy, you cut it to 18 minute quarters, so you’re playing less than 80 minutes of footy,” Dangerfield said.

“I think I’ve worked it out. It’s a bit over five games extra you’d play a season, but you might not play as many games as it might be spread out differently and then publicly the revenue it would create would jump significantly because it’d be more games played.”

Patrick Dangerfield has suggested either a 17-week or 34-week home and away season.

The midfielder said the clubs would come back in November, which would give players a six-week window to prepare for the expanded season.

“You speak to most team PT staff, ‘we need 10 weeks to get our players ready’ or ‘we need 12 weeks to get our players ready’,” Dangerfield said.

“Put it as mandatory you’ve got six weeks, good luck — and that’s what you’ve got and you’ve got to adjust to it.”

The Geelong star said he is excited for new innovation AFLX to begin, imploring the public to give it a chance before judging.

“It’s interesting when it was first released there was a bit of scepticism around it,” Dangerfield said.

“I think that was the same where the Twenty20 cricket was released and we saw what happened in India with the $3.2 billion dollar TV rights and how the Big Bash has really taken off.

“It’s a great concept the AFL’s come up with and I think if the public give it a chance, I think it’s something everyone’s going to enjoy.

I don't know how AFL would go over the summer. It is only one players idea though.

Perhaps there would be more "exciting" games as scores should would be presumably closer going into the 4th quarter.

It would be in direct conflict with AFLX though. Which is in conflict with using football pitches.
