A refurb may still be okay. Depends on the sight-lines.

It'll be a sad reflection on NSW politics if early 00's Lang Park remains the best football ground in the country after these two are done though. Stadium Australia's design needs to live up to the name.

Gee can we get the RBB to kneecap Ayres or something?  That slug has fucked over Football and Rugby League massively and Peter Beattie has completely folded in response.

Has the NRL responded yet?

More importantly, what would be the costings and timing? Again, I'm expecting Allianz knockdown rebuild first which will no doubt soak up all funding for ANZ.

The NRL has folded on their threat to move the GF to Qld because of the overall improvement to the stadiums they use.

Allianz goes first but the schedule sees ANZ finished two years earlier than planned for the knock down rebuild option.

There is a video of what they say it will look like when it is finished.

That’ll go a long way to improving the intimacy but it’ll be a shame if the outer wings stay as-is. I can see people pushing for another refurb/rebuild long before too long.

Gladys has folded on the council amalgamations and now this. Baird mustn’t be too happy.

I think this is a win for football,  SFC and WSW with new stadiums and a new stadium for socceroos and exhibition matches.  Rebuilding ANZ would have been preferred but this is the next best thing.

ANZ Stadium redevelopment

Are they going to extend the side roof to make "all seats under cover" as quoted or do 10k patrons run the risk of having no cover as shown in the artists impression?

Its nice putting up a good looking image but for us technical people what is the design "c" value for the new tiers of seating?  What is the seating plat width?  What is the seat width and seats per sq m?  Do all these meet current standards?

Ive sat in the top tier and the view is decent and I've sat in the bottom tier and the view is abysmal, so done right this could work. My only issue is that the venue should be a minimum 80k.

I imagine what they'll do is demolish the whole lower tier and dig the pitch deeper and build the new bottom tier, steeper and closer.

They would have to dig the pitch in deep and have a decent gap height between the last row of the bottom tier and the next tier up so the can see over it I imagine.

I'm puzzled as to why rectangularising the lower tier and leaving the rest alone would make the capacity smaller, but perhaps it's possible, the key would be how many seats go behind the goals I imagine. Also agree in that they shouldn't be looking at lowering the capacity of Homebush, the strategy should always have been to have two quality venues the right size for the events that are on all the time in and one big one in the middle big enough for the events on a couple times of the year, but of course Alan Jones says no.

Oh well, just means more games for Victoria if you cock it up.

The NSW govt have gone about this completely the wrong way.

They should be re-building the local RL grounds like brookvale/belmore/shark park/campbelltown etc with max 20,000 seats.

The perimeter of the ground in its rectangular shape is about 60m less for the first row of seats than the current shape.  Thats about 110 seats less in the first row.  The loss increases slightly each row.  The existing bottom tier has about 45 rows of seats so thats a loss of 5,000+ seats just due to the perimeter change.

Additionally by moving the bottom tier close to the pitch the rake of the tier has to increase to maintain the same quality of viewing.  This results in less rows that fit in the vertical space set by the structure for the middle tiers.  It looks to be about 10 rows lost which at about 1,000 seats per row means up to 10,000 seats lost.

Those figures are estimated off cross sections and plans of the existing tier and comparison with images of the proposal and there is a little bit of double counting so they are ball park but it demonstrates that the loss of 13,500 seat capacity is about right.

Agreed, but Allianz is rather dated. I remember being a wee lad and not being able to see a thing because of the slope of the stands.

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Article from the Herald today suggested Allianz won't be completed until 2022. Am I crazy or is that a year or 2 after it was originally planned to be finished?

When does Sydney FC's deal start with the alternative venues? According to this article the SFS demolition doesn't start until January which seems a fair whack of a season they could still be playing there?

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/state-politics/one-year-to-bring-down-sydney-football-stadium/news-story/2eab6a7d403b10fa24964db7e36e4e16

Also, 12 month demolition job? Dead giveaway this is a government project...

The last article detail is interesting. A proposed Outer Western Sydney Stadium. Never heard of it.

The outer west stadium was in the 2012 NSW Stadium Strategy.  The plan was to acquire the land now and build in a decade or so.  Its the project that the South West Sydney A-League bid is based on seeing its been moved to be in the aerotropolis which is going to be just south of the new airport in Liverpool LGA.  I think they have kept quiet on it for a while because more money for stadiums would be a red rag to a bull for the electorate.

Just adding to what Gyfox has posted, it seems like there will be controversy wherever they build it.

The State Government still plans to build a new sports venue in outer western Sydney as part of its long-term stadium strategy.
While there’s been major focus on upgrades to ANZ, Allianz and Pirtek Stadiums in recent months, the Weekender can reveal that the planned outer western Sydney stadium is still on the agenda.
Penrith is considered the favourite to secure the new stadium, given the expected boost to population and economic catchment over the next decade and the fact that the Panthers NRL club can guarantee content.

SCG Trust wants a Metro West rail stop for Moore Park stadium revamp

The powerful Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust is calling for a new heavy rail station to be built at Moore Park, to complement its $730 million new stadium.

Submissions on the controversial plan to build a new 45,000 seat venue to replace Allianz Stadium, made public on Monday, are overwhelmingly hostile to Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres' stadium policy.

But the submissions on the new stadium also reveal the SCG Trust's lobbying for a new rail stop to improve access to the area.

The SCG Trust is urging the government to extend its proposed Metro West rail line to include a stop at Moore Park, which will also have a dedicated stop on the 12-kilometre light rail route from Circular Quay to the eastern suburbs.

"While we agree the light rail will make a significant contribution to movement of patrons in and out of the precinct, a stop on the new Metro West line would be a step-change in transport and access," SCG Trust chairman Tony Shepherd said in his submission.

He said the stop "would make a significant contribution to a car-free precinct".

"Further, an SCG/SFS stop would link directly to the proposed stop at Zetland, providing the easiest of access for the rapidly growing residential population of Green Square."

Absolute buckley's chance of that. State Gov are only going to tout potential metro stops in places where a significant density uplift is possible, ie Waterloo.

Having spoken with someone from Transport previously about this, no chance. Metro is it.
Even though i agree it would be by far the best option to get people into and out of the precinct. Metros are still stuck on roads, Trains by pass everyone and link quickly with other main services.
