According to this article there will be a training squad for the boys U17's (Joeys) this week. Guessing this will be for the u16 Asian Championships. Jack Simmons who scored the other night for the Jets will be a part of that, it'd be good to see some news come out in the coming days about squad details. Feels like an absolute age since we had a squad announced for any youth tournament.

Will be good to see who's shot up

The way the FFA have cost cut the youth teams has been nothing short of a disgrace, neither the Joeys or the young Socceroos have not played a single game all year and the qualifiers are in the next few months? And we expect so much from them?

Then we wonder why we don’t qualify for world cups anymore.

Instead the topic will be our why are players are not good enough or the NC is the fault etc when not everyone is looking at the bigger picture as to how the youth teams don’t have strong enough structures or the funds to stay on terms with the rest of Asia largely thanks to the FFA.

Arzani only makes it under age bracket for this U20 WC cycle by 4 days. And he's already played (well) in 3 games at a Senior World Cup.
Does that make him the Messi/Ronaldo of the U20 World Cup?

How arrogant. No reason we can't play these young lads to get them used to one another and their styles. This is the perfect oppurtunit and we can establish a winning culture.

McGree too old by just under two months, sadly.

Why spend the money when we can use it for a marquee fund for the A-league?

Extract from the wiki section n the u19 AFF Championship 2018

“All of 12 teams from member associations of the ASEAN Football Federation are eligible for the tournament. Only Australia did not enter the tournament. “

The tournament in in Indonesia outside the NYL/A-League season.

FFA penny pinching again.

It is a bit strange. Its for 2000 > born players so one would think a chance to look at some of the lads that can play up in the U19/20's qualifiers coming up in October.

A positive IMO in that there is a bit of a spread of players, and at least some from non A-League clubs. Previous Joeys squads were just the AIS squad with one or two others. So if you didn't happen to be at the AIS for that cycle then you missed out. Much more appropriate to actually go and look at the young players playing all across Australia and select the team from that.

AIS is gone.
They have to go to the clubs (A-league and NPL)

Lol yea that was kinda my point, i.e. maybe it’s not such a bad thing the AIS is gone. Certainly hadn’t produced many world beaters in the last 10-15 years.

By comparison my 9 year old headed off with his U11 Wehen Wiesbaden team on a 3 day team building training camp.
Jogging 3km from the lodgings to the training grounds,
Doing a 90 min training session then walking back.Have lunch,a break then jogging back to the grounds again for another 90min training session. In the evenings they had organised outings tenpin bowling, swimming pool and amusement park.
They are now preparing to play a tournament on the 18th of August against Mainz 05,Offenbach Kickers and three other Academy teams.
The week after they have 3 x 25min game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
This is just U11 football in Germany and it is sad to see Junior National Football in Australia can’t even get the boys to train together and organise competition for them.Like others have said above how can you expect them to preform without constant competition .

And yet we've never actually played each other at senior level, can you believe it?

I checked Wikki and we played South Vietnam on 15 October 1972 in Saigon. I thought we played them in 1975 as Saigon was being bombed by the Viet Cong. Couldn't see any record of that, so it must have been the 1972 clash. Bombs could be heard going off in the background. Quite an unbelievable experience for the players.

Definitely true, Johnny Warren tells the story of it in Sheilas Wogs and Poofters, but that was South Vietnam, not Vietnam.

I feel good about our chances at the upcoming AFC U19 Championship in October, if we call up all our players. Defence pretty thin though.

That’s a very juicy attack and midfield. Hopefully they can all be called up and have a chance to play with eachother.

I have heard Mark Schwarzer say his family have become English. Would be interesting to see how he feels if he gets a call up.To be honest I would rather he choose England as Australia has had nothing to do with his development even though his dad is a Aussie footballing legend.
