Wayne 'Buck' Shellford made his Test debut for the All Blacks against France in a 19–7 victory in Toulouse, and then was a notable victim of the infamous 'Battle of Nantes' in the second Test. Roughly 20 minutes into the match, he was caught at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck, and an errant French boot found its way into Shelford's groin, somehow ripping his scrotum and leaving one testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the process. Incredibly, after discovering the injury to his scrotum, he calmly asked the physio to stitch up the tear and returned to the field before a blow to his head left him concussed. He was substituted and watched the remainder of the game from the grandstand where he witnessed the All Blacks lose 16–3. To this day Shelford has no memory of the game. In 1990, the All Black selectors decided that Shelford was not up to the standard for the team and was controversially dropped after the test series against Scotland. The general public were unhappy with this decision, especially when the All Blacks lost the third test of their next series against Australia, ending a 17-test winning streak (and 49 game streak including non-tests). After this fans started appearing at games with signs saying 'Bring Back Buck', which continues even to this day at sporting events throughout the world...

How many players in 1st grade apart from the twins do you think we have that are real first graders? According to Mark Hughes ... 3. So all the fans of Priest and Frawley and Holland, I know this will come as devastating news.

On the contrary I am not surprised and I am in general agreement, but I have also never thought Frawley was an NRL half. Holland is a good attacking player but struggles with the defensive side and has bern caught out a lot the last 2 weeks. Priest is a "project player" who is getting a run becase he has a good additude ... and the coach thinks he can improve his game or there is currently no better alternative .... One part of building a team is improving the players we have ... we might only have 3 NRL players, but we might be able to turn 3 more into NRL players... While in the right ballpark Hudges is probably exaggerating to make a point.

We are better off doing a proper job of the clean out and rebuild. .. We need to sign a 9 or build JMK into an elite starting 9, the raw ingredients are just about there.

Hughes says the way Cleal recruited was terrible, no news there I know. Hughes' opinion is that Jackson, Klemmer and Hopoate are the only true top 1st graders they have. He always thought Martin was a second grader but has up-graded him to 50/50 after his improvement this year.

Looking at the rest of the side the following players are at least reasonable:- Elliott, RFM, Martin, Lewis, Tolman. The following young players have shown enough to suggest that they have potential :- JMK, Smith, Renouf T, Harper. Then we have the signings :- Cogger, Meaney and the Penrith winger. Finally if Foran can get back to something like reasonable fitness he is an NRL player. . What we need is- 1. A good starting prop. 2. One reasonable NRL standard centre or move Lewis to centre. 3. Find a quality 9 & 7, possibly from players already at the club. I agree that we have close to the weakest squad in the NRL at present. ... but at the same time we are not that far off being competitive. .. 9 & 7 are the major problem. .. followed by Klem not getting enough help in the middle. .. So fix the problems... but build on what we have.

I’m happy with that assumption Nancy....
No doubt between now and the end of the season.... the likes of Holland, Lichaa, Fualalo, Priest etc will play the odd good game..... but these guys should never be seen in first grade again come season 2019
Them guys listed above would have been good during the 90’s.... like Gavin Lester, Marteene, Gillies etc.... players with limited skill but played with effort
We need a sh1tload more than effort right now

Well I think we all agree and most members and fans, and our recruiters also, that there is a whole heap of work to do.
No point in giving up. As long as we now know the Board etc are recognising, the same as most, where we need strengthening the admitting thar the roster is totally lacking, then we'd br ok with that and can't expect miracles.
I do have reservations as to whether Pay is up there as a fg coach and if plonkers like Priest are re-signed that will be confirmed that mediocre tryers are ok in our team.
Hope we can set some higher standards.

I predict a comp in 22:) Someone close to me had a long conversation with Pay last night at the club he knew him only to say hello but after talking to him last night he was totally impressed at what he heard from Pay. Not only is he a top bloke but he knows what he hasn't got and what we need ... especially a couple of forwards that can hit hard and often. He laments the lack of aggression big time. Whether that happens with getting someone like Hipgrave time will tell as he has an official offer.

There have been some promising signs the last few weeks, the team is trying hard our ball movement has improved and the style of play is evolving ... it isn't translating into results as we don't have the players ,.... but it doesn't look like the problem is bad coaching at this stage.

They are confident Meaney will handle 1st grade eventually. Whether it is right away will depend on him putting on some muscle in the off season and learning how to put his body on the line in defence. Some Newcastle people they trust had only great things to say about him.

Them going is the only thing stopping thus season being a total train-wreck. IMO the admin at most other clubs is not outstanding and most coaches have their good and bad points Bellamy is the only exceptional coach, but Seboid is off to an outstanding start at Souths ... or perhaps Madge was just as bad as Des. .. No reason why we can't get back tup there given a season or 2.

I could have warned him about that:) At the board election time, I was very disappointed Pay (apparently) supported Dib and went with some players to support the imcumbents...perhaps they were used as pawns by Fibby Dibby..but I still think it was foolish to show allegience to one group..better to just be the impartial employee. I must add as well that Pay should have made himself FULLY aware of the crazy contracts and spoken to the Spreadsheet Guy about the backends, ratchets, overs etc...but who really knows if he had full access..apparentlyy Madge did...but a lot of goss and or facts are not what they should have been with Fibster....should be formally called to account when the full report card is available. With saying there's only 3 first graders in the squad, yeah its out there and it will take a while to clear those contracts. Morale couldn't be high at present though with the players being spoken of in such a way? I have confidence that we are in much better hands for the future. Norman?

I think for Pay, he’s had one fekked up ride so far with every scenario thrown at him..... that’ll make him hopefully an even better coach dealing with certain situations going forward
