gotta love a game where you can start playing it as an adult ,spend two years learning it, then star as a professional against players who have played it all their lives. Here is a bit of Wikipedia history.
"Playing as a ruckman and key forward, he first played Australian rules football in April 2014 before making his AFL debut just two years later in April 2016. Cox had previously played basketball for Oklahoma State University in the Big 12 Conference. On debut, he became the tallest player in the history of the AFL, overtaking Aaron Sandilands in height."[2]

If Bolt ends up playing in the champions league final, you could laugh. Bolt is currently currently trialing for the bottom team in a competition not in the top 40 in the world.
Cox is playing in the biggest game possible in AFL anywhere in the world.

This Cox bloke never physically touched an AFL ball until he already had a contract at Collingwood, playing at the top level of the sport.

Bolt being allowed a chance to trial in the backwater of football's backwater with CCM is one thing, but this is like someone starting for Real Madrid in the Champions League final having never touched a football until after signing for them. Unthinkable!

Joke of a sport.

The AFL had a specific rule for these types of players. The rookie list was divided into A and B list with B specifically for players who could prove they had never played the sport at either professional levels or the top tier state competitions. The Crows had a player on their list for years and years who hadn't touched a ball in any sport - he was a swimmer.

Sydney used the same rule to sign a Canadian rugby union international.

That's fucking embarrassing.

And AFL people have actually argued that you should watch AFL because they're the best athletes in the world in their sport as opposed to other codes in Australia, but it's clearly proven that any reject of another sport of sufficient tallness can easily get to their top level.

But why does this matter? Is this some kind of dick measuring contest? My sport is better than their sport kind of thing? Just... why? Football doesn't need to be defended with Euro snobbery. That just turns people off. It's not like anyone's forcing you to watch it. You watch what you enjoy, but there's no need to be a snob about it. A preference for football over AFL does not make any of us geniuses.

I personally think that AFL is inescapably a bit of a joke, but also kinda fun. It's fast, frantic and can be engaging if you give yourself over to it. I've never been to an actual game, but I enjoy following the Swans on TV. I guess I don't judge the entertainment value of a sport on how hard it is to pick up for new players. Who cares?

The AFL pumps itself up as the most skillful sport on Earth. It's highly relevant that you can rock up to a game called football, get your biceps measured, then get a pro contract.

yeah I do see your point and largely agree ..we do worry too much about AFL and should just concentrate on our own sport...however it is good to get a little dig into a sport that constantly seems fixated on holding ours back...and I don't think there would be too many who would not agree that AFL seems far more worried about Football than football is about AFL.

They're just insecure and desperate to hang onto their one and only patch. Of course they try to pump themselves up. I don't hold that against them. Admittedly, I live in NSW so I'm completely removed from the hype. I might be more annoyed if I was blasted with their propaganda 24/7 as happens in Victoria.

Anyway, it's obviously far from the most skilful game,  but neither is it as free of skill as some of you claim. It still has its dominant teams and players that are plainly more "skilled" than the others. Sure, the ruck position doesn't require much beyond being tall and able to catch the ball, but some players are clearly better at kicking, marking, reading the game, and defending than others. It's not rocket science, but it's wrong to say there's no skill at all in what they do.

I will not support AwFuL at all after learning that their aim is to kill football from the grassroots to the top. They are jealous of the participation base and that is the reason they want our pitches.

If only the FFA could have focused on growing the game by interacting with local, state and federal govt ties in a meaningful way. On the FFA, is it 7 sleeps to Armageddon?

There should be an AFL bashing thread with all the incidents associated with crowd violence, racism etc listed.

So Bolt having a kick-about in the park and watching football qualifies him for a pro spot in Australia. You are delusional.

I think the one with the delusion is you.
One Bolt, plays park football, watches football, a fan, also regarded the greatest athlete in the world ever, gets a trial for the bottom team of the 3rd tier football competition.
Another Cox, never played or watched AFL until 4 years ago, a reject from his chosen sport, about to star in the biggest game anywhere in the world for this sport.

Exactly. Mason Cox wouldn't have known AFL even EXISTED 10 years ago, unless he was already one of those actual o/s foody fans(ie. basement-dwelling virgins) getting their fix from the Sporting Curiosities show on ESPN😂😂

The other thing, the fact this Cox character was a career sporting-reject indicates how desperate the AFL are to get foreigners playing it as part of their global expansion plans😂😂 At least back in the day this was confined to Gaelic Football players(ie. the sport that AFL actually was derived from) - Jim Stynes was AFAIK one of the most promising talents in GF at the time he was coaxed to try AFL and going on to become a modern great in that.

So by that logic, Conor McGregor should also get a trial with CCM, seeing as he is regarded as one of the greatest ever and he actually played as an amateur & still watches football. Lets also add Roger Federer, and any number of other european elite athletes, imagine the publicity they could generate.

I think it's a mistake to give that kind of kind of Melbourne tabloid idiocy any relevance or attention.

Our biggest enemy (Rebecca Wilson) wasn't even an AFL person. I really hated that moron. I couldn't even pretend I was sorry when she died.

I don't know about everyone else but I am so sick of feeling like others are trying to kill my favourite sport and I can do nothing about it ....I wonder if there is someone out there with the energy ,knowledge and connections to organize a mass petition to our Government ....and maybe the FFA as well ?
We have the largest participation numbers in the country and get only $4.8million a year ????  WTF ! Thats about $3.50 for each player....well do me a dance !...isn't that a windfall for which we should all be grateful !
I could get some new laces for my boots ...woops .....no they are $4.00 a pair ...maybe next year !!!
...and how dare these morons ( women or men I don't care ..they are all morons...) start trying to sabotage a process most in the Australian football world want to happen.
These jerks at Sports Australia knew about these recommendations for months and have only just now come out (on the eve of the vote) and said they don't like them .
They also would be well aware that FIFA do not countenance political interference...if they do not.... they should be sacked immediately for incompetence.....but who sacks them ? and who ,for that matter, appointed them ? I didn't ....
How about we tell Sports Australia to fuck off and we put player fees up $3.50 per year ...I think I can handle that extra burden !!!!

What is your point ?  I am not calling other forum members disparaging names .My original comments were quite obviously aimed at the people on this forum calling other forum members nasty names simply because they have different views .
You called me "delusional" for having a different view to you ...try treating people with a little respect ...you may be surprised at the results .
The mere fact you went searching through my posts to find a "telling comeback blow" only illustrates your desire to have an argument  ..sorry you won't be getting one here sport...
BTW ...In your example above I am calling Sports Australia jerks and the Lowys and their lackeys morons...neither of which are forum contributors to the best of my knowledge........and if you have a problem with me criticising them .....I really could not give a rats .

All over the news and lots of discussions on talk back radio here in Melbourne about the AFL intrducing 9 new rule changes next season. If they keep trying hard enough one day they will have the perfect game, but come to think of it they could always revert to Association Football.

It's incredible that the governing body would introduce NINE rule changes in an effort to 'make the game better'! They've had 100+ years to sort out the rules!
