Sydney FC is expecting a TV audience of more than 55 million for the game against PSG and have signed a one game front of shirt sponsorship with Chinese company Mediland Pharm.

So HAL rates around half the ratings of NRL and AFL? So pretty much the same ratio,if not better than five years ago. I wonder if Foxsports will be reading the riot act to those sports?

+x+xWith the exception of the Manly/Storm game, all those ratings are terrible, clearly it isn't just Football that is losing Foxtel viewers. It will be interesting to see what Foxtel's ideas for growth are if they are pulling out of Football when, clearly, putting more money into AFL/NRL and Cricket isn't going to provide any growth. I would be very happy if 10 is serious about building a platform around football, I dont think it will immediately reap ratings but I think as a long term strategy it could be very successful. There is so much potential for growth, in the league and second division, ACL, women's football and improved men's national team. If done correctly, TEN could have all year content with football. Obviously the Socceroos/Matildas and the A-League will probably be the main drawcards, but there is plenty of football happening around the world at any one time that they can have one sports strategy cover 12 months. Unlike the other codes, which stop abruptly at the end of their seasons, forcing the stations to fork out on other content (see channel 7 and having to pay big bucks for both AFL and cricket). For an interesting comparison, The Australian Rugby team playing an international test against Argentina in prime time rated 151k on 10. If we can get ratings of 100-150k to start with on the prime channel, with advertising, promotion, exposure and an improved product with independent clubs investing more, then that is a good, achievable target to begin with.

+x+xIn its latest financial results released in May, Foxtel lost 100,000 broadcast subscribers from 2.5 million in the previous quarter to 2.4 million but had encouraging growth in its streaming products Kayo (209,000 subscribers) and Foxtel Now (505,000 subscribers) Kayo has passed 300,000 it announced recently. It's be interesting now that Foxtel and Netflix struck a deal.

Very very very interesting article on viewing in the US ... my guess is we are similar ... this certainty highlights two things IMO one you must be broadcast in clubs, pubs, etc so Fox, Optus or even things like Bar TV are important and to be both streamed and on fixed broadcasting the articles looks at age groups and how they watch. https://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/article/2019/for-the-win-out-of-home-viewers-of-fall-sports-on-linear-tv-are-engaged/First bit copied... lots more in the article including charts and stats...if interested in this kinda stuff... Younger consumers, typically Millennials, are always on the go—from visiting family to working out to connecting with colleagues at happy hour. While they live busy lifestyles, they also like to stay connected to what’s happening with their favorite sports teams. And that means these highly engaged viewers look for ways to stay connected to the latest scores and catch a game regardless of where they are. Across the many places to catch a game, restaurants, bars and someone else’s home are top destinations for fall sports viewing and social engagement.

I take it there wont be any ratings for WSW v Leeds as its on bein sports. I'd expect 32k tops metro and region combined.

+xFIFA just released the viewing figures for [Women's World Cup] final. Largest audience wasn’t in USA. It was in Brazil where almost 20 million viewers watched. Globo TV’s share was 41.7, blowing away Fox’s 27. Impressive numbers, especially in Brazil where their team wasn’t even playing in the match.

+x+xKayo has surpassed 300,000 subscribers. some AFL games on Foxtel on the weekend were akin to HAL numbers. Freo v Eagles 60k. Suns v Tigers 71k. no doubt the FTA and Kayo numbers would have been much higher, but those pay TV ratings have to be alarming for Foxtel. Those numbers are very low, AFL is definitely going backwards Perhaps, but maybe it also points towards wider changes in how people are viewing sport these days. Puts the A-leagues decline in Foxtel numbers into context.

So is there a suggestion that AFL viewing on Fox is down while Kayo subscriptions are up?
FMD, who would have thought it ...

+x I was thinking this too. Was watching the games and the crowds were lower than usual.
AFL: crowds are up from memory. 2% i think. North Melbourne v St KIlda on sunday only 71k ($166 on FTA)

Anyone else got data to back this up or is it just me? Which games? Perth and adelaide had derbies so full houses. The MCG games topped 50k, GWS was empty from what i saw.

+x+xSuper Rugby TV ratings were through the roof beating Socceroos WC games and yet there was no Australian team in the final. Super Rugby GF got 81k thats less than 20% of what the HAL GF got. Which is still through the roof compares to their usual ratings. which are similar to ours though tbf

+xIn regards to taking on two games a week? I'd imagine they're in a bit of a holding pattern whilst the independence issue is sorted, which in turn dictates on whether TEN likes the direction the game is heading to invest in. That makes sense, but wouldn't they have a say in the fixturing if they were to get more involved? especially when the rumour is saturday and sunday night games is their preference? we're hearing the fixture will be released at some point next week. I'm starting to think the statsus quo will remain next season when it comes to TV rights.
