Martial arts is the only thing I can think of... And that's a deliberate thing...

In Martial arts yelling out is part of delivering maximum power, perhaps it is just mental focus, or getting the breathing right.

I get that tennis players are trying to wack the ball hard, it is just that grunting is new in that sport and seems unnecessary.

But you could do both without making a noise.

In Karate, you lose points for not making a noise, you need to yell out on specific moves .e.g move 10, so for starters it isn't every move.

I don't even really like tennis, bores me to tears. I'll watch the odd Championship match but mainly for the history of it, especially if an Aussies involved, but that's about it.

But the "grunting" controversy has always bemused me. Is it not a sign of effort - and that's what you pay for? I think half the complaints can be put down to tennis being a "silent" sport (for want of a better term) as in the spectators MUST remain silent during play and so all you can hear is the players. Imagine League if the crowd weren't allowed to cheer during play, all you'd hear is a thousand grunts and exclamations. Then imagine if League players weren't allowed to grunt to interrupt the silence - Rubin Wiki would never had played a single game.

Let them grunt, don't be so precious about your ears.

There's always snooker for you.

Dylan Napa faces possible suspension before he's played a minute for his new club as NRL boss Todd Greenberg vowed stronger action on wayward players.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/napa-future-uncertain-as-greenberg-talks-tough-on-player-misconduct-20190121-p50sou.html

Tis interesting the main angle of the story is about videos being leaked and not speeding while drunk, or pleading guilty to common assault of a woman... By the same token I wonder if other names were called out by the reporter...
Tough talk Greenberg... I expect you would start with the guy who pleaded guilty... Not too much deliberation for the integrity commission needed there...

The argument is the grunt is not a sign of effort...

What else would it be? the "argument" that it's to put the other player off makes no sense because if it were to be for that they'd grunt when their opponent's hitting the ball not themselves.

Some players need to grunt to match their effort, some don't. Really who the f*** is it for anybody to say and what is it about it that offends them anyway?

I'm sure I'd grunt, I grunt getting out of bed.

Gotta start a campaign ridiculing their animal like rutting grunts...that might embarrass them and affect their sponsorships ...and then they might stop...or at least the young ones coming through might learn to hit the ball without grunting and shreaking out loud. 7 minute breaks and you lose a game might work as well.

I reckon the crowd or opponent should be able to scream noises as they are winding up a shot! That might put them off.

Didn't mind the read, and the limited science behind it backs my thoughts...
I don't mind the odd effort grunt, but the crap that takes place today... I can't name a legend that was a grunter... Modem legend Rafa does, but its one of the many reasons I reckon Bellamy would sign him...
I also have a problem with the towel stuff... First of all, it should never have been  ball kids duty... And secondly its a precious load of sh!t....
Wipe your hands in your shorts... Your brow on your sleeve...
#stefanedburg...

Oh yes the towel.....I hate it.
After every bloody point. Poor ball kids.
They should only get 10 towel wipes a set.
If they want more, they can run to their sear and wipe but the server can serve without them in position to receive. That'll fix them.

It's time for Tough Talkin Toddy to go...
Wants to clamp down on bad behaviour, but hailed inglis as a hero for owning his drunk driving speeding... And then goes on to provide a character reference for the blokes court case...

So let me get this right, endangering the public And breaking the law on two counts is OK... Be photographed by perverts is not...

Cmon Toddy, you've got a guilty plea from Bolton to start your war on player behaviour...

"These are very serious criminal charges and if players are found guilty of those serious criminal charges they will face a significant time out of the game if ever playing again," he said.
"Violence against women and charges that relate to violence against women will take the very highest accountability so you can expect very big sanctions against that, and people who want to start comparing our sanctions against previous ones should probably start again because there is going to be a reset and we are going to get harder and we are going to get tougher."

Like pleading guilty to common assault Toddy??...

It's time for Greenberg to think seriously about his future in the game. OK, maybe Napa did make a mistake (a while back mind you). You can't punish the dog for chewing up the shoes six months later. Plus Napa is now with a new employer and you can't punish the Dogs for a misadventure that happened when he was with Easts. If Greenberg tries, I hope that the Dogs committee sues his ar$e for disrupting their quest for a premiership and he has to be removed from his position.

Cant help but agree with you here.
Greenburgs stance on this issue should be that in light of other recent misdemeanours, this silly act shouldnt even make the news or be dwelled upon - particularly since it happened many years ago.

But instead he chooses to make a big deal of it and bring it in the spotlight.

Who's bringing the game into disrepute Greenturd?

"More reports of off the field drama with a well-known reporter obtaining a photo of an elite player from an out of Sydney club snorting a line of cocaine during a big night out.
The photo is reportedly not going to be released by the journalist, but has been given to the club to look into."

Goes to show, not all journo's make pieces of dung of themselves (like Rothfield for example), at least one seems to be doing the right thing rather than ruining someones life.
It still doesn't mean players in the spotlight should be doing that of course...

Sounds like it's a journo from SMH trying to stick the boot into the DT by not releasing the name.

They've done this many a time as an attempt to show that they have more morals.

Would it be reasonable if Tough Talking Toddy trotted something along the lines of "I won't be speaking about matters before the integrity commission, we will make a full statement when the investigation is complete... The NRL has been clear with regard to its expectations regarding player behaviour"...
The hinting at possible penalties is amateur at best...
Sure the press mightn't like it but i reckon its a better look than calling a presser every time someone tries to stitch up the Dogs, or a commissioner happens to see a paper in the Qantas club...
