+x+x+xEasts are in as good a position as anyone has been this millenium to go B2B, but I've been saying that about the last 4 or 5 Premiers too, especially Melb, so in the end it really means sh.t. I do think it will be out of Easts and Souths though and Souths will be stronger than last year and possibly even 2014. Bennett has something he hasn't had for a long loooooooong time and better than he's had since 2000 odd - a genuine Premiership winning halfback. He's gonna be hard to stop. Well one of us is going to be right about Souths :) That is the thing with footy predictions this time of the year can be made to look silly. I'm not sure of Reynolds is the sort of half who runs the attack with a crisp passing game, his kicking game is close to the best in the business. That is why I am very glad we are focusing on passing this year, most team were moving the ball too slowly in 2018, making it easy for slide defences. I think the time is also right to move away from structured rehearsed plays into a more ad-lib style where the players play what is in front of them.  That is new territory for a lot of NRL halves. It has just been a while since we have had a major shake up and migration to a new style, in our case that is the main hope. Souths under Seibold did evolve, where they were stuck in the grove with Maguire. I saw a lot of Broncos games, their attack was very ordinary at times, and Kodi N is a smart player. Milford is a class player who was probably playing out of position.I agree they were lacking a good organising half. Yeah not expecting Souths or Sharks to be a contender but every chance to make finals. I just think John Morris is too young and too close to the players. The only coach in recent history to make a successful transition from player to first grade coach is Ivan Clearye.   Nothing wrong with a youthful coach, I think the NFL Rams coach is 33 and got them to the big dance... Exactly how are you measuring Clearys success?... GF appearance and numerous finals appearances with teams not expected to even come close. Anyone can coach a team full of stars to finals. Cleary has done it again and again with far less.  Of all young coaches in the NRL he would be close to the best if not the best.  I also measure the "pulling power" of the coach. Players want to play under him and move cities, states and even country to play under him. He is either very influential as a coach or he is got some form of Stockholm syndrome going on.

I remember a much maligned coach who did similar things with a team expected to do little... Maybe even took them to 2 grand finals...  #goosegander... ;)

+x+x+x+x+x+xEasts are in as good a position as anyone has been this millenium to go B2B, but I've been saying that about the last 4 or 5 Premiers too, especially Melb, so in the end it really means sh.t. But I personally didnt like the gameplan at all.  In my opinion Cleary has achieved as much as Des but also managed to get his teams play attractive football. And this at 3 different clubs.

I think the difference is that Cleary has had to inherit cellar dwellers with his every move. The exception being this year. He is a very good coach to rebuild a team very quickly. He hasn't got a GF win so might be judged harshly on that but I maintain that his teams play wonderful footy.  Both are restarting at clubs they have coached previously this year, so will be an interesting comparison on how they perform. Cleary has the jump in that Penrith are the higher placed team from last year and with the better roster...

+x[quote]Anyone can coach a team full of stars to finals. Cleary has done it again and again with far less.
Of all young coaches in the NRL he would be close to the best if not the best.
Cleary is 47 and has been coaching NRL since 2006. Robinson is 41 and has been coaching NRl 2013. Paul Green is 46 and has been coaching NRl since 2014. Nowhere near the youngest, nowhere near the best. 2019 he has an instant Premiership winning squad. Now we'll see how good or bad he is.

+x+x[quote]Anyone can coach a team full of stars to finals.
I can see panthers crashing out in week 2 of finals... Which will no doubt be hailed as a technical premiership cos of their pretty style...

https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/02/14/schoolboy-skills-rugby-guru-steve-james-teaching-canterbury-bulldogs-to-pass-again/My fav line... "I wanted to work on my passing this year," Lichaa tells NRL.com... My least favourite line... "It's not just for me, it's for everyone in our team. Kieran Foran's been playing NRL for 10 years and he's showing him things too.  Jeez this bloke knows how to speak out of school...   But I'm behind ya this year Lich, let's hope for your careers sake and the Dogs season the passing practice has been worthwhile... #golich...

I can't believe his much I hate T20... Almost 4 overs in, and I've turned it off to watch half decade old repeats of spicks and specks... The sports nut in me has been trumped by the purist...

Smoke alert on Twitter/FB from one bloke I don't rate at all, another I don't know and the last... meh. But I will say all seem independent of each other and saying the same thing - so take it as you will.
NRL and Police investigation into SC breaches by three high profile clubs.
If something comes of it, remember where you heard it first. If nothing does remember I did say to take it as you will and the first bloke makes up sh.t daily.

Heaps said this afternoon "The Sharks are in danger of having their Premiership stripped."

+xSeems Heaps and co were talking about it on Talkin's Sport, which may be where the Twitter/.FB smoke come from. Also discussed on Big Sports Breaky...  How grand it would be to see the sharks have their title stripped... Admit to cheating in '15 and '17, but '16 is nothing to see here... How very convenient...

Knowing the NRL, it the bulldogs, Canterbury, and bankstown... Yep,all the other clubs are invisible. Which is another way of saying irrelevant, or no one gives a toss about them.  So perhaps the NRL knows people only pay attention to the Dogs.

Not sure about what you peeps think.... but I hope Pay doesn’t go with JMK on the bench!
It’s a waste of a bench player who may only play 5-15mins, and brings not much more than the person he maybe replacing in Lichaa

Would be my bench for Rd1

+xWell Big T.... if that is the case, then JMK definitely has no place on the benchNot a bad idea, Martin is a good footballer, but CHN & RFM to me offer more I disagree. Martin was exceptional in the second row last year. His goal kicking alone makes him a starter. In my opinion RFM is the one under pressure. While he was good prior to his injury, he had a couple of non stand-out seasons under Des. If he comes back to the pre-injury form, he will make strong claims for a spot. That spot might be the bench.  If Pay can get Martin into hooker - all good, as long as someone takes over running those diagonal lines into gaps. Could be CHN but recent form suggest that man is Martin.

+x+xWell Big T.... if that is the case, then JMK definitely has no place on the benchNot a bad idea, Martin is a good footballer, but CHN & RFM to me offer more I disagree. RFM was clearly playing injured at the back-end of the season, sometimes it isn't fair to judge in that situation. I had thought of getting Tolman to play a stint at hooker as I see things. 9 Martin/Tolman 14 Lichaa/JMK. The forward simply plays the first 20 minutes at hooker then the main hooker comes on off the bench, saves carrying a specialist bench hooker, and probably an interchange.   We do have some good options for the backrow, and I want Martin on the field where possible for goal kicking, That frees Dutchy up to simply be legendary.

Hooker role is not someone you can just throw a prop or second rower into... Different skill set, different approach that can't be taught in an off season. Hell, we've got a bloke who has played it all his life and can't get it right... Its  terrible idea, and if be surprised if it happened... The Bennett/big Sam idea didn't work nor did the Arthur/brown experiment...
