OK serous question.

I am very sceptical about the claimed range of these cars on one single charge. I think they are way over inflated.

What is also interesting is that they don't provide a range at night when you would have all your lights on.

How much does the range go down by in that case?

What's the claim?

The claim is that some cars can do over 400 miles on a single charge give or take, but they don't say how much range at night.

I saw a so called expert on The Drum who also said there are a lot of misconceptions. Such as the fast charge point are not at all fast. There is some misleading information out there.

670 miles on 1 charge is the record with a Tesla. This is according to the Guardian.

Range is such an overblown consideration given that the average person travels less than 50km a day.

https://www.theage.com.au/politics/victoria/how-long-is-your-commute-the-national-average-is-now-16-kilometres-20180522-p4zgvu.html

http://www.roymorgan.com/findings/australian-moterists-drive-average-15530km-201305090702  (Equivalent to 40km/day).

http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/9208.0

AVERAGE KILOMETRES TRAVELLED
  • Victorians drove further on average with the highest average kilometres travelled (14.1 thousand kilometres), followed by Queensland (13.7 thousand kilometres).
  • Both the Victorian and Queensland estimates were above the national average (13.4 thousand kilometres).
  • Vehicles registered in Tasmania reported the lowest average kilometres (12.1 thousand kilometres).

At 14 000 km/yr that's equivalent to 38 km/day.

People need to get over RANGE anxiety.  It's not an issue for 99 percent of the people 99% of the time.

Yeh, the average person travels 60 kms a day. But what about those who live 2 hours out of Sydney and need the commute to work?

Or when you are going interstate on a week long holiday?

Now. it maybe the case when you take into consideration the average pensioner that goes to the grocery store 2 clicks away but I travel 25 kms to work and back. I am sure it will handle it, but I'm talking about the non average days.

I'm done with you.

Why do you think I won't buy one? I am as a matter of fact quite optimistic about the development of this technology into the future. I just don't think we are there yet.

I am more than willing to buy one when I think the technology is at a point where it is worthwhile and practical.

Do you have money to buy one now? If not, how long?
Do you know what you are looking for?

I could if I wanted to buy a Tesla. But I think it is better to wait for the tech to get better.

Do I know what I am looking for? No, not exactly.

haha....Shortfused got stuffed over today. He stated that Toyota were going to stop making ICE cars by 2025.

So one clever journo decided to contact Toyota and ask them, and Toyota laughed and said it was a lie. Toyota will be making ICE vehicles in 2025 and in fact had no plans in producing a dedicated EV for Australia by 2025.

Even by Elon Musk's standards, his Shanghai plan is ambitious: take 86 hectares of muddy farmland on the outskirts of the city's peninsula and start rolling out Chinese-made Tesla Model 3s within a year.

I'm pretty sure they said they're planning on making EV versions of all their vehicles by 2025. Possibly Bill got confused but such a massive gotcha (if it happened) would have been plastered all over the Australian and similar right wing news outlets yet I can't find any reference to it...

He did say it. Heard him say it on the radio too. Then this journo went after him for not answering his unrelated question on the costings of his policies.

When end he answered the journo kept saying “you haven’t answered my question Shortfused”
it was so funny...

I've invested in lithium stocks when they were priced so low so I'm all for the rise in electric cars for obvious reasons, however I don't ever see myself driving one 😂

If they went 500 km on a 15 minute charge, got serviced at 50 000 kms intervals and cost 1/4 of what it costs in petrol or diesel why wouldn't you?

Genuine question.  Are you philosophically opposed or do you have actual reasons?

I honestly can't wait for them to become more popular and more competitively priced.

No way I'm opposed they are a great idea. For me it's simply me being a car enthusiasts and I love my V8's, so something that's mute just doesn't do it for me.
Tesla already make one of, if not the quickest cars on the market so the technology is there and it'll only improve. Maybe the only thing that'll be hard to keep down will be their price.
I don't think you'll have to wait too long I truly believe by 2025 there will be alot more electric cars on the streets, especially for those people that don't travel so far to work day in day out so the range wouldn't matter as much.
But yeh overall for me I just like the tune of a V8 too much to jump into something that pretty much makes no noise.

I think there will be laws introduced whereby they have to produce a minimum amount of noise on the street because they are too quiet and they are finding that pedestrians are getting run over.

Pedestrians are basically walking in front of them because they can't hear them coming..

Considering how easy it would be for them to fix this problem I'm actually surprised this issue wasn't resolved years ago.

Me too. I think manufacturers like Tesla didn't want to solve the issue but Government will be required to step in because people are being run over.
