Nothing at all to do with the franchise closed top tier model of the A league. If this was the reason we have low ratings/crowds, then you would also expect that NRL/AFL would have low ratings/crowds, as they have the same model.

But do you understand why they have the same model?

Do you understand the difference between a local market and a global market? The difference between a monopoly on the code vs a leg of a global empire?

Aussie Rules is literally called AFL. I would estimate over 95% of Aussie Rules fans are AFL fans

Australian bands / artists have to compete with American bands / artists for sales. Same for movie producers. Same for app / game designers. Our players and teams are in competition with the EPL and La Liga. It was estimated 72% of registered players were ignoring the A League

When 70% of our best players are not eligible to play in the ACL, and 50% of our big name players finish in the bottom half of the league then that puts us on the back foot. This years finals series had no representation from West Sydney or Brisbane

I am by no means defending FFA or supporting the current model but it is for a variety of reasons, the least of all being TV ratings.

I just think TV ratings are being used as a stick to beat the game around the head when I don't think that traditional TV rating methods are reflective of the way our audience consumes TV and Football. I think TV ratings reflect what "mainstream" Australians are doing i.e watching MAFS, AFL and A Current Affair. If the FFA is genuine about increasing ratings then get more games on FTA and expose the millions of Aussie kids playing it to Australian football and grow a genuine, mainstream audience.

Australian Football and the a-league is a good product, becoming a full pyramid, reunifying the game and focusing more on player development and less on TV ratings and metrics will simply make it even better....but hey, that's just my opinion.

The 2 Aussie rules teams playing on the mcg at the moment were founded in 1858 and 1902 respectively, of course what works for Aussie rules with its flagship clubs being around for over a century and having generational support is not going to work for football.

The VFL (VFA) is older than the AFL (VFL) but they dont have the same dominance

The AFL took the same approach as (I think) the NFL did in America. Uniting all fans behind a single league and crushing all other leagues into oblivion. The WAFL, VFA and SANFL became insignificant and today are unofficial feeder leagues. The AFL is Aussie Rules

You will never see a second tier because that means eyeballs and revenue for a league that isnt the AFL

We dont have that economic model.

It would be interesting to find what the current "connection" figure is.  The club's have increased their involvement in the market to build connection and there were 726,000 participants in A-League and W-League club run activities in 2018.  This was 14% up on the previous year.

Nothing stopped the fans of interstate teams continuing to support their traditional clubs in the wafl, sanfl etc, the key was being ale to keep the traditional element in Victoria, let’s remember the new interstate teams were joining the vfl which would later become the afl. The new interstate franchises were cashed up and pretty much saved the vfl/afl from oblivion. How Fitzroy was the only casualty is a miracle.

despite the above, Aussie rules does enjoy good grasssports support, it’s not uncommon for local country footy grand finals to get crowds of 10,000. The average spectator doesn’t care about the Aussie rules development and the stuff we take so seriously in our game, it’s not like they need to build a national team or create players to go to better leagues. It really is our nfl, but it’s a horrible thing to try and copycat when you’re competing globally,

the new interstate teams were joining the vfl which would later become the afl. The new interstate franchises were cashed up and pretty much saved the vfl/afl from oblivion

The new interstate teams were new teams. Only Port Adelaide had historic ties and the AFL nullified their history

The AFL put teams in other states, as you said, to get their money. But this was more about the AFL expanding outwards rather than linking with existing teams and giving those leagues / teams recognition

The AFL had a monopoly on the game, and even sport in the state. This changed recently (late 90s) and particularly with the Internet era. Duel code following which was once a sin is now the norm. Other sports commentators even pay tributes to other sports and announce their upcoming games. The only exception is the AFL commentators. They even talk about their players being on "world record pace" and the term "nil all draw" crept into its terminology at the world cup before last

If the SANFL or WAFL ever became significant it would pose a threat to the AFL (and internationally if they get their wish)

What good is plonking games on FTA if there's little interest in the product

So, as of this point, the Melbourne/Wellington match is the second most tweeted about football match of all codes this weekend. I know, I know, it is just because people at the game are tweeting instead of watching and fans of other codes don't know how to use technology yet...but it is still a slight positive light of optimism for our game.

Them and South Melbourne (the AFL team).

Some pretend that Fitzroy and South Melbourne live on in Brisbane and Sydney respectively, but they're kidding themselves.

Had over 2500 tweets which is in line with most AFL games and was more than the Rugby League game(which had a crowd of 7000), so I'm starting to think that TV ratings are a load of shit.

Oh yes the billions of billions of Kayo subscribers. Chances are they were watching something else.

An indication of the literacy and numeracy skills of the average Soccer fan.

They can usually speak in sentences, don’t swear as much, get pissed as much, shower daily whether they need it or not, can count to 21 without using their fingers and toes whilst the average AFL supporter doesn’t.

Soccer fans also also have a full set of teeth because they brush and floss and are more likely to be on Twitter.

The thread follows the exact same pattern every fucking time, it's so predictable and sad.

Someone (typically Waz or Eldar) will reasonably point to a piece of evidence that indicates things aren't so bad as they appear and that TV ratings may not be a true reflection of the amount of people watching the games, and then people like SelectFew and RossL will jump down their throats and straw-man them as if they claimed that an extra 100000 people are watching online.

It really must get tiresome being so negative all the time.

I think it's another piece of evidence that supports the (very reasonable) assumption that football fans tend to skew younger than AFL/NRL fans, so therefore they're more likely to be tech-savvy so you'd expect a higher proportion of people to be streaming online compared to the traditional codes.

horrendous

this doesn't surprise me as no one watches Wellington games on TV in Australia. but lets see how last nights game went. no clash with the other major codes and 2 Australian teams playing. plus extra time. should be a lot higher.

Just saw that SBS viceland got 80K for 2 screenings of "The Fifth Element" . They had it on repeat yesterday and I actually watched one waiting for HAL to start. Will be interesting to see what HAL got.

I think the defenders and the attackers of the current system are full of it and both wrong.

There are some out there who think a change in operating models will suddenly engage the nation and Football will rise from the ashes... others who see changing to much to fast cannot be paid for and will see us fall over... both are extreme positions nowhere near the truth IMO ..

In simple terms in any population you have a certain % of people who watch sport, in Australia the chosen sports are AFL, NRL & Cricket with everyone else trying to get traction...

For me its always been simple, engage the player base and to do that you need to engage the regional associations and their park teams.

For me the best way to engage and impower an engagement of the player base is develop a model we can all sorta agree with, say for arguments sake, 32 professional teams over two divisions both male and female with P & R between them and with enough funding for national programs and national teams.

Lets not burden the model with other issues, like salary cap, transfers, finals, etc... just simply agree this is what we want and say we have to make this work and assume it can't happen overnight, equally we don't want it in 50 years, so set an achievable target time frame and chip away at it year on year.

Other issues like the salary cap, transfers etc will work themselves out as the model develops.

If we continue with our dick measuring positions in that my ideas are better than your ideas we will continue to be divided and that means failure .

I hope, pray, wish, not sure if I believe, that someone or some group will come along and take control of the conversation and set us up, as if we continue the toxic environment and infighting,  we have now no one or very few will want to deal with us ...

My reading of the tea leafs is we have a lot of hard work in front of us and there is no easy answer and we have to earn hhhmmmm better word is command respect  from the public, we can't demand a system change and expect people to come flooding in... essentially command not demand respect and to do that and engage the association s we need a model to work with and a leadership team to drive it.
