Zac Saddler granted a release, we now have a free slot in the top 30.
I think we will sign someone before June 30th..... musical chairs kicking off?

I would question what has happened to RFM he as a great player 1-2 years ago, but went backwards most of 2018 and got worse in 2019.

Many things can lead to going backwards... not coming back from injury trusting your body, personal stuff, believing you're owed something and better than you are, dramas with the coach...
whatever it is he's seems to have lost a ton of mongrel on both sides of the ball...

The results cause the rumours and good coaches don't NEED to drop good players that's what he's judged on.

So dropping isaako and Roberts made Seibold a bad coach???...
Bennetts dropped plenty over the years too to send a message...

Prior to Pay coming on board all I  heard was why doesn't Des drop this player or that due to form or attitude...

Pay does it and now we have this... Or is only cos he dropped a couple of fan favourites the rumours start???...

Are there still Dibbys out there planting the seeds to destabilise in attempt to regain power???...

CHN based on onfield effort (who knows about offield attitude) deserved a stint in reggies, let's hope he's man enough to take it in board and pull his finger out on the field...

The other thing I am saying is if there is a lot of media and twitter speculation then that is good....

We will not need to wait long to see how the players respond, or don't respond... that will answer the question...

If they like and respect the coach, and want him to keep his job, they will turn up.

It's much easier for the players to 'turn it up' than turn up... too much hard work, and would mean they have take some form of ownership for their pathetic first half efforts in the close games, and second half capitulationa in the blow outs...

That is why I say Pay practically needs a miracle..... our players haven't shown any ability to come out of the sheds firing, or put together more than 10-15 mins of good football a game.

Apart from Elliott, Jackson. Odgen, R Smith, Montoya, Okunbor, Crichton, (and surprisingly) Cogger there is a really lack of desire to run hard, fight hard and want to win. Foran is doing his best on one leg. Meaney is a bit young.... Chris Smith has a bit of mongrel..... Sue and Danny F try hard most of the time... Lewis is great when he is in the side, I would have him in for that reason alone... he wants to win...
But we are not a team that fights for every inch for 80 mins, when we do turn it on, we are surprisingly good.

Pay's only hope is, when we do get it right and we do want to fight for every inch, we are surprisingly good, he also has to hope the team are sick of losing, and we can get some direction from dummy half...

It don't see this as all on the coach by any stretch of the imagination, the players are at least 50% of the problem.

That's exactly what is frustrating to see/hear. In early May several players came out saying they're not starting games well, so they'll be out to start games well, start games well this, start games well that. A month later against Canberra they lasted a whole 40 seconds into the match before the first error/penalty/turnover. That's terribly unprofessional & last week was twice as bad considering they only lasted 20 seconds into the match before the first error/penalty/turnover. Closing out matches suffers the same horror show. In between they're barely building any pressure at all with repeat sets. When they do get a few in a row they waste most tackles on settlers before swinging it wide & throwing it to the invisible winger over the sideline or something else that looks like no thought's gone into..

It might be partially due to the coach, but I've never seen a Dogs team start games so consistently badly...

Mostly it is down to our leadership in the forwards, and our props don't aim up in the first 20 mins ... there is a battle on early for ruck supremacy and yardage, you need to get into the fight... run hard, tackle hard ... Tolman should not be a starting prop.. OK as a lock if we have 2 good props.

Of course coaches drop players.

My emphasis on NEED is to highlight that that seems to be Dean's first option and not work on getting the best out of our players before dropping them. There are several players he has dropped this season, all in one game ...bettter coaches only seem to need to drop one or two was my point.

Hope you aren't suggesting I'm a dibby...I was constantly admonished for critisizing him, his coach and Board :)

Times have changed with coaching whether we like it or not. . It's more man management. Dropping players and telling them to man up doesn't have the same ring to it for these twenty somethings :) especially when it comes from a coach who hasn't proved himself either.

All I know is we aren't doing too well so something needs to change.

Better coaches start with a team of better players, and players that know there are good players in reserve grade waiting for their spot.

I'm happy that Pay is dropping players, and he is mostly getting that right..... if players are professionals they should take it on board as part of the job.... I bet they are given a reason.... and there is some truth in all reasons....

What he hasn't been able to do is get 17 players playing good football for 80 mins... that is mostly because we don't have 17 good players...

It's hard to figure it out because the talent & fitness is there & they're trying hard. I'd even go as far as saying the majority have game-smarts, but game-smarts & focus are what keeps disappearing in the heat of the moment. Maybe they need to dig a trench full of hot coals & spent time walking back & forth over it balancing an egg on their heads without breaking it, while the cheerleaders stab them with umbrellas & whatever other obstacles & distractions you can think of being cast their way, just to strengthen their focus under trying circumstances. I might try it myself, been struggling to sit through 80 mins as a mad fan. :)

Sure is frustrating. Take last week. Interview with Hoppa. "This is a must win situation for us to save our season".

What happens? He trots out. Plods along. Has no impact on the must win game.

No one dismisses how hard it would be for Pay. These guys are overblown bludgers compared to our players of the past.

But a coach must offer solutions and inspire players with a plan and be consistent, without playing less talented favourites and only dropping certain others. That can't be said about Dean.

BN I'll give the team credit for not turning it up and fighting hard for the full 80 mins...... in fact after 20 mins when they get over the shock that they are actually paying football, we are quite often the better team for the next 60......

We look slick in attack on rare occasions then that all disappears as quickly as it came, most games we have ample opportunities in the opponents 20, while it isn't always easy to score tries from close, we lose our way and waste a lot of opportunities just like we did under Des.

Starting games it is our forward leaders particularly our props who should be setting the tone, in the opponents 20 a quality 9 is essential.

Failing that if our players tried hard to start well, and our dummy halves opened their eyes, and engaged their brain, we might go better.

I'm just as frustrated as other fans, but I don't think dropping players, or rumours are the problem, they are the symptoms, not the disease.

I don't think it is favourites, Pay seems like he has been trying to fix the defence, generally all successful team are built on defence...

But with our team the way our season has been going, he needs to try a different tack.... time to work on our attack....  and take a few risks.

Lewis said he was dropped to improve his defence?

I think that left edge defence of Martin,Lewis, and Holland was a disaster .... so Pay dropped all 3, that fact hat Cogger was playing better than Lewis at the time didn't help.

Lewis was dropped for decision making and defence, it was mainly decision making in attack, bad kicks and bad passes, not running enough.

Still it was a mistake dropping Lewis and he should be in our 17 as he is one of the best 17 players at the club...

Whether Lewis should be playing instead Cogger is line ball, Cogger plays great some games (or parts of games), I like both players and Foran, I'm not playing favourites, but of the 3 Lewis is more likely to be a long term part of the club.

Not every decision to drop a player has been right, but at least 50% of them have been,

With a weak roster it is unrealistic to expect a good win loss ratio.  What needs to be assessed is are the tactics and selections maximizing the teams chances.  Just as important is are we seeing the younger players developing at an acceptable rate.  If the answers are yes the coach stays, if not he goes.

Good post.
It goes for coaches, but also administrators and also players.

The key issue with Pay is that he has dropped better players than the ones he replaced them or dropped players who really didnt feel they needed to be dropped.

If your player does something silly and is reluctantly dropped for disciplinary reasons, fair enough. But when you drop players for inexplicable reasons, you begin to lose respect. Do it to 1 or 2 players who you are getting rid of mid year or end, and it's not a CLM but do it repeatedly to a number of them and the results dont go in your favour and you all but seal your career....

Pay is that level.
It's the same level as K Moore. Rubber stamped as Never to coach again

You are right in some respects, but the wolves are never satisfied....

And I don't think there'd be many players that would admit to themselves they probably deserved to be... especially with a generation of snowflakes entering the game...

And the wolves consistently play both sides of the ball...

Now it's a case of don't drop CHN for a lesser player for any reason, yet earlier in the season it was drop Dutchy for anyone...

CHN deserved to be dropped for on field performance, he has imo put in a real effort only twice this year... we have no idea if there were off field matters that contributed... he may well have been "reluctantly dropped".,.

Not so sure how our NRL side would go against the Falcons, some very good players and well drilled.

More coming outa the Storm system.

Wow.
For those didnt watch Cooper Cronk on NRL360 tonight, do yourselves a favour and try to watch a replay.

Two main things come to light which I've mentioned here before....

1) We need to make him a serious offer as first grade coach. I would give him assistant coach next year (if we keep Pay) but then guarantee him the role for 2020.

2) He explains (in explicit detail) how you need to adjust your game tactics due to changing nature of the previous play. This is something I have harped on about for the last few weeks. It's the reason I have been wanting more smart players in our team as I think we dont have any.

As I have said many times before, the gap between us and the top teams at the moment is not small like afew people think (HD and couple of others) - its massive.

The fix however is quite simple but I'm not sure our current crop of first graders can execute it.

Watch the interview. It solves everything.

Did he express the desire to be a coach???...

I'd say he would be able to make serious coin on TV and as a consultant for several teams... minus the stress of coaching...

At his retirement announcement he said "I won't coach".
