This is going to be an unpopular comment - the 3rd gold shouldnt of stood. Just keep that inmind the next time something doesnt go our way in football and everyone says FIFA is biased against Australia - On another note - Good on the girls, great come back and didnt give up - that is Aussie spirit

Or maybe the italians kicking the ball away after the penalty was called in the first game (a yellow every day of the week), happened like 8 times. We had enough not go our way in the last couple of game.

On another note, alot of people are getting ahead of themselves in terms of what the victory means. Few points.
1.brazil have won 1 of the last 10 2.they have not beaten a european, north american, or asian team( with the exception of jamacia) outright since 2016. 3. In all that time they have never scored 2 goals.( besides jamacia)
And this is only from 5 minutes of investigating.
Im all for a matildas victory and i hope we go all the way, i just think perspective is in order.

I thought Catley was good at CB. KK was ok at LB, not great, not bad. Gielnik was ok too, lovely first time pass to Logarzo for her cross turned goal and she made some good runs down the right, as well as tracking back on defense. Raso was good when she came on, would be nice to see her start. I think Logarzo was pretty good too.

I think we were the better team but we’re lucky to get the last 2 goals.

+x@melbcityguyI think we were the better team but we’re lucky to get the last 2 goals. This. Bit of good fortune involved with the second goal we scored but nothing wrong with it. The last goal should not have been allowed to stand, imo. Also, I didn't get a good look at it but apparently Catley hauled down a Brazilian player in the box late in the match. Matildas lucky not to concede a penalty there. I can understand why the Brazilians were still furious after the match. A couple of big calls against them.

+xNeed another couple of goals please. Would be good to go into the last game with similar goal difference. I was amazed to see them running it into the corners with more than 10 minutes plus injury time remaining.

+xPhew. Little lucky but we'll take that. Still nervous about that defence. Commentators just watched Kerr miss that ball by a foot and are still crediting it to her? They're honestly hopeless. I couldn't believe it either. And then on the 3rd goal how they couldn't work out that "not interfering with play" had been the ruling.

Haven't watched it yet, Just highlights, looks like we were lucky. Knew Brazil haven't been the same for quite a while, do we look better or are we still screwed?

We looked better and I would say we just shaded Brazil overall on balance of play but we'll need to improve further to go deep, I reckon.

Never in doubt. Well done ladies. Now go & kick Jamaica's arse & power into the next round.
p.s This does not excuse the conspirators, nor will it ever.

+xOffside offence
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by: - interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
- interfering with an opponent by:
- preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
- challenging an opponent for the ball or
- clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
- making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
Personally thought the winning goal was offside, but going on this it would suggest that the correct decision was made. I thought the Brazilian pen was very soft, watching it live thought Yallops a few mins earlier looked more like a pen (but didn't look like one on replay, would have been interesting to see if VAR would have over ruled). Similarly would have been interesting to see if VAR would have overruled Brazil pen if the ref hadn't called it. I think the problem with the defense isn't necessarily the high line but how compact their line is across the field. Eg for the 2nd goal ball was played between rb and CB to a striker making a diagonal run, the CB was too far central when ball played and slow to come across, then the other CB and lb should have been slid across, but both stayed in their original line as if ball was in middle of the park instead of down their right side. Leaves lots of passing lanes open

Looked more like the Brazilian ran into her and fell down (desperate act trying to get a pen), and then Cantley fell over her

+x+xIs it too much to hope for more than a three goal win over Jamaica for first spot in the group? You are relying on Brazil beating Italy. Haven't seen Jamaica play, so unsure how many goals we can reasonably expected to win by. I'd be expecting Jamaica to be pretty weak and way out of the Matildas' league. Expect a big win.

We only really scored 1 goal which was s a problem, the first one. second goal was the Brazililian keepers fault and the third goal was the Brazilian CBs fault.
we need to put 4 over Jamaica to have a chance at topping the group.

Another way of looking at the last two goals is that Kerr drew all the attention from multiple defenders (and in the case of the first goal, the keeper also) which caused the errors. The second goal was lucky because on another day, or if it was another ref, they may have interpreted the rules differently.

Obviously agree on the 3rd goal but the 2nd goal was a pretty legit caused by a good attacking run by Kerr and her implied threat. You see these sorts of goals all the time and it's hard to be OVERLY critical of the keeper there.

Can we still blame the FFA for being two-nil down? Lol.
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

+xthought it should have been 2-1 to us so 3-2 is fair Swings and roundabouts. Possibly 2-1 to us with an extra penalty to Brazil in the dying stages.

Nice to see we have 3 high quality youth players in the team that should be with the matildas for the next decade. (00)Carpenter(RB), (01)Roestbakken(LB/DM), (03)Fowler(S)

I didn't realise just how poor this Brazil team is or that we were always huge favourites. They lost 7 games in a row coming into the tournament. They're nowhere near the level required. It was a good win in the end, but Brazil would seem to be pretty bad right now.
