Now Daley is saying plan A refurb, or if the stadium demolition is too far gone b) 30k capacity rebuild

should have been this in the first place. gotta laugh at the arrogance of the NSW govt continuing the demolish a week from the NSW election. it wouldn't kill them to hold off until the voters have decided.

Not surprising. Libs allowed themselves to get wedged on this and now labor can be all anti stadium despite knowing full well they will have to spend money once elected to deal with the SFS.

In the end, rebuild or development, this mostly screws the Libs, Rugby Australia and the SCG Trust and I'm OK with that outcome.

It's the plans for homebush that I'm far more concerned about. Australia's de facto home stadium is a heap of shit and simple refurb isn't going to do squat.

Australia does not need a home stadium. Just take the games around the country, it's good enough for all the big countries.

I'm not saying Sydney should be the home for every game, I didn't even want that in Scotland when the recent Hampden talks were happening (mostly because Hampden is a dump and I don't trust the SFA to do anything to fix it).

But Homebush is the biggest rectangular stadium in the country and the biggest games like World Cup Play Offs are by default played there.

Everyone interstate begrudgingly accepts the fact we are flying to Sydney whenever a big international game is happening. That'd be a lot easier pill to swallow if the stadium wasn't a massive shithole.

Australia wins its world cup qualifiers there. Why would we play anywhere else?

Ould be funny if the SFS gets levelled at its turned into a 25000 seater when Stuart Ayres gets booted and most of the SCG Trust is sacked.

Guess the Libs now have the mandate to get the stadiums done and hopefully , they use whatever resources they need to get it done properly and to last. Parramatta, Moore Park, Homebush and Campbelltown done properly really sets Football in NSW up with a quality, well spread stadium map.

'Back to the drawing board': small field left to finish $729m Sydney Football Stadium

“.....Mr Waterhouse was dubious that any of the contractors would be able to finish the project within the $729 million budget.

"My view is that if Lendlease can't do it, I'll be very surprised if anyone else can do it. Then it's a question of whether ... the architects need to go back to the drawing board and make any changes needed to get the price down."

As an aside, when are they going to rename ANZ/Homebush/Stadium Australia/Sydney Olympic Stadium to Kathy Freeman Stadium?

Might not make perfect sense if that came with a rectangularisation, mind you.

Just take 5-7000 seats out. That should do it.

Plan for a stadium 3 times the size of it's average attendance, including an LED curtain of sorts to cover up all the empty seats for 90% of the events there. Seems like an extravagant waste of money. If it was smaller it wouldn't need the curtain!

Yeah, this shit always happens, knock it down and do a half arsed job just to need it done again in 20 years. The only reason to knock it down in the first place was to build a world class stadium. Sydney is its own worst enemy.

It wouldn't be FIFA compliant for a major tournament (not that we are going to be hosting a major tournament soon).

Sydney is a dead set embarrassment of a city.

The biggest city in the country and it can’t organzie the sums to build a new stadium, even when the government is paying for the lot.

Finish this half arsed white elephant already and wait for the crowds to not show up again.

Pathetic.

2bn on public transport would have doubled crowds... 2bn on gold platting inaccessible white elephants... nup, but at least the corporates will be comfy and the punters can get their beer quicker...

“The Australian understands that one offer from Lendlease to cut costs was to make the stadium roughly the same standard as the Bankwest stadium at Parramatta, but the government and the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust are after a higher-standard stadium.“If any contractor doesn’t provide what the government’s asked for, we’ll look elsewhere and that’s what’s happened in this circumstance,” Ms Berejiklian said. “I’m absolutely confident; the timeline’s there for us to meet, the budget’s there for us to meet, there are other interested parties and I look forward to issuing a contract.“We want to make sure it’s world-class … within the budget and we look forward to having a contractor on board to meet those requirements.”

The term 'world class' doesn't mean much.  You can have a 'world class' local stadium or a 'world class' regional stadium or a 'world class' national stadium or a 'world class' iconic stadium which are all different standard specs and therefore different costs/seat.  One of the differences between Bankwest and the new SFS is that the new SFS is fully FIFA compliant.

Is the SFS the one that is demolished and the contractor walked away or am I lost in the Moore park issues?

Yes, and I don’t think we can get that standard for the price the NSW Government has quoted and is willing to pay. This demolition job happened first to put SFS before Homebush which is my gripe.

Has this got anything to do with the Liberals?
Demolition contract was separate from construction.  After demolition,  construction contractor tried to change contract.  Liberals said go away.  I'm pretty sure that any government would do that

Sounds more like the contractors didn't have any designs to go on until after the demolition, it all sounds a bit unusual but hopefully the stadium gets done properly and for the best price.

My understanding is that the contract was for demolition and construction with the construction price to be firmed up when the design was finished and with the contractor having the right to walk if the negotiations failed.  Although it's not the way that things are usually done here the idea is that both parties share the risks and the government would pay the real cost of the real development.

Is $16,200 per seat low, correct or excessive for the design delivered by Cox?  It's about the same cost per seat as Wembley.  It's a difficult site to build on. It's a high standard spec.  Does the $729m include allowances for replacing the NRL, Sheridan and Roosters building?

There is nothing world class about Sydney’s stadium network. BankWest is its only success and has ironically exposed how shit the rest of it is...

Instead of rebuilding Allianz to satisfy corporate fat cats and trying to satisfy FIFA compliance despite no foreseeable chance of hosting a WC, how about they build it appropriately for the tenants and their fans? That’s where you’ll save money right there.

It’s no coincidence that BankWest is the best stadium project seen in NSW - it was built and designed appropriately (minus the terribly designed western stand having no general public access) to those who will play and spectate in it.

NRL: Games limit on Bankwest

Sydney’s stadium headaches have stretched to the freshly minted Bankwest Stadium as officials attempt to change a rule limiting the venue’s capacity to 49 sporting contests in the course of the year. While that rule — contained in a planning document governing the use of the stadium — isn’t a problem now, it threatens to become one as the ground prepares to become the epicentre of rugby league when both Allianz and ANZ Stadiums are out of action.During that period, Canterbury and South Sydney have already announced they will take games to Bankwest, marking a significant increase in the number of games that will be played at the ground from 2021.It is understood NSW government officials have already begun working on increasing the number of games that can be played at the venue to 70, a move that would ease the concerns of not only the NRL, but the clubs planning to move to the ground.Government sources played down the significance of the clause limiting the number of games, insisting they deliberately chased events and the restriction was a carry-over from the old Parramatta Stadium, which was demolished to make way for Bankwest.Venues NSW is believed to be working feverishly behind the scenes to appease the concerns of those who could be affected.”
