“What to do with the SFS site at Moore Park? How 'bout giving Sydney what it is in most urgent need of: a leafy green space for people to walk around in?

And yes, I appreciate that while this is NSW money, not federal money, that, too, can be worked out. Work out what money it will take to sustain all of the professional football codes, and keep them alive so they can begin next season intact. Let NSW work out their portion of that figure, and come to an agreement with the other states to fund it, taking that debt off the fed’s hands – as the bills they will have to pay in coming months will be catastrophic enough, without stuffing around with sport.”

Gladys, by and large, has shown genuine leadership in this pandemic to date.

This is an obvious one, Premier. Do it.

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/keeping-codes-afloat-needs-to-start-with-reallocating-stadium-funds-20200318-p54beq.html

“Government committed those funds so Sydney and the state of NSW can compete against all other states and nations for the best quality facilities for events for the next 50 years,” Quayle, who is a Venues NSW director, said. “To divert money now in the short-term to help sports that have overspent and not planned for the future would be wrong. They will never get that money back because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

From 3 weeks ago-
“The NRL will demand a multi-million-dollar compensation payment, to be invested in boutique suburban stadiums, should the NSW state government fail to deliver the rebuilt Allianz Stadium on time.

V'landys wants to see tribalism return to rugby league, and this column understands discussions have taken place regarding the construction of several 15,000 to 20,000-seat boutique grounds around Sydney.

Manly, Campbelltown, Penrith and Sydney's south have been earmarked as primary targets, with all nine Sydney clubs to be catered for as part of the NRL's grand plan.”

I think everything about the SFS project from its design to the way its been handled is stupid but that doesn't stop Fitzsimmons being an insufferable pest.

Biggest benefit of the SFS is its location in my opinion, yeah the parking and transport there is dodgy for some people, but every stadium has its problems and personally travelling to Kogarah is challenging for every match. Impossible on a friday night for some with work and traffic.

No so easy peasy when the train requires 2 buses to get to and the total time on just the buses can be an 45 mins to an hour 15 mins and then the train ride. Not saying I dont mind travelling, driving is usually much easier, but if its a midweek or friday night game and im working which is most weekdays I cant get down to Kogarah

Yep, the government will pump money into infrastructure spending to help get the countries economy going again. Wouldn't surprise me if tax rates went up or a special Levy was introduced to help pay for it all though.

I agree with the infrastructure spend. I’m not sure a stadium is going to get it though

“Sydney has put plans for a new $70 million AFL headquarters on hold because of the financial impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Swans had planned to share a redeveloped Royal Hall of Industries building at Moore Park - next to the Sydney Cricket Ground - with netball’s NSW Swifts.

But the centre of excellence plan will not come to fruition any time soon, with the Swans pulling out of a deal with the NSW Government and Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust.”

Shark Park too dangerous for bottle shop to open on game nights

It's the home of Prime Minister Scott Morrison's beloved Cronulla Sharks rugby league team, and part of the furniture in the Sutherland Shire. But Shark Park has been ruled too dangerous for a bottle shop to open on game nights, in a regulatory battle that ended up in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The concerns involve a forthcoming residential and commercial town centre on Woolooware Bay, adjacent to Shark Park, which developer Capital Bluestone describes as "Paradise Found: Our bay comes to life." The attached shopping centre will contain a Dan Murphy's liquor store located about 100 metres from the nearest entrance to the stadium.

In 2018, NSW Police opposed the licence application, with Sergeant Darrin Thompson saying the store would make it "extremely convenient" for rugby fans to smuggle booze into the stadium - which was already part of a "significant and ongoing" problem with alcohol at Shark Park. The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority, which regulates liquor licences, decided the store must close for the two hours before and after a first grade rugby game at Shark Park, or any "fight night" boxing match, due to the potential for increased alcohol-related harm.
Dan Murphy's - which is owned by Woolworths - challenged that ruling, and hired a former police commander, Patrick Paroz, to prepare a number of reports on the matter. Mr Paroz said he twice attempted to smuggle store-bought alcohol into Shark Park games and was caught both times, although under cross-examination agreed his beer bottles "had not been well hidden in his bag".Meanwhile, the ILGA engaged social planner Judith Stubbs, who attended a Sharks v. Rabbitohs match at Shark Park in August. Dr Stubbs said she observed people "drinking openly and freely" in the alcohol free zone between Woolooware Station and the stadium, including on the train, in the queue and in the presence of police officers. She said a Dan Murphy's store would "significantly alter" the pre-game environment and increase the incidence of "pre-loading" on booze.Sergeant Thompson, who was on duty for that August match, told the tribunal he witnessed 40 people being refused entry to the nearby Leagues Club after the game, and that about 25 people were ejected from the club, due to intoxication. The ILGA even hired corporate consultant Newgate Australia to survey 150 nearby residents on the impact of street drinking on game nights. About 35 per cent complained of "excessive noise and offensive conduct", including public urination, damage to property and vandalism of cars.In its decision last week, the Civil and Administrative Tribunal said Mr Paroz's observations about the drinking culture at Shark Park appeared "unduly sanguine", while the police and the ILGA had described scenes that would be "considered typical Australian crowd behaviour at popular sports events". Accordingly, the tribunal upheld that the Dan Murphy's store must be closed 90 minutes before and after any first grade rugby matches at Shark Park.

Shark Park too dangerous for bottle shop to open on game nights

It's the home of Prime Minister Scott Morrison's beloved Cronulla Sharks rugby league team

Let's put this myth to rest right now. Scott Morrison's sport of choice is Rugby Union. Scott Morrison MP tweeted  in 2012 'Rugby will always be my game, but the is the greatest show in Oz'. He was an Eastern suburbs boy only moving to the shire in 2009. Another one says "I'm more of a Rugby fan, but naturally when it comes to the NRL, the Sharks have my loyalty" He only really embraced Rugby League to promote an everyman image to contrast himself with his predessor Malcolm Turnbull.

Another myth - John Howard cricket tragic. In 2014 Cricket NSW appointed John Howard as a patron describing him as a lifelong cricket tragic. That also doesn't fit with the facts. John Howard, when interviewed at the cricket in January 1997 in the first year of his Prime Ministership he was asked did he remember the last test match he went to. He recalled it vividly because he went to it with his father. He then described the innings Bradman played and that Sid Barnes played. That match was played in December 1946. The great cricket tragic didn't go to a test match between December 1946 and January 1997 and had  little interest in the game in between. He only used it to cultivate his own everyman image and  show his difference from Keating and his French clocks .

These are political myths and should be recognised as such.

That is a long bow to draw.

I didn't like Howard as a politician, but I have no real doubt he was a cricket lover.  I do know he attended a local testimonial match Bradman played in 49.  Would a strong connection to local and state cricket qualify as a cricket tragic?  I like cricket, but have attended about 1 days worth of test cricket in my life.

So someone like Howard, saying he is a cricket tragic, but not attending many test matches is not something I find difficult to believe.  This doesn't mean his increased attendance later on wasn't politically motivated, highly likely it was.  But I doubt he was feigning interest in the sport.

In 1949 he was 10 and his father would have taken him.  Not a long bow - met him in 1969 when he was going for the State seat of Drummoyne. He 'preached' as a lay preacher in the Drummoyne Methodist Church and told the Five Dock Recorder that he often preached there. He had never preached there before or since.

He was given the nick name of 'honest' John Howard as an ironic term not because he was honest a fact that Alan Ramsay and Ken Begg used to lament because of the poor knowledge of political journalists. He is a consummate politician but a cricket lover he isn't. He routinely fobbed off cricket invitations locally but attended Rugby League invitations. How do I know - I lived in his area,  as a kid when he went for the State seat Drummoyne and later when I lived at Marsfield a part of Bennelong.

“The greatest game of all: politicians pretending to be sports fans

sp

The most shameless - nay, brilliant - example of a politician faking a sporting allegiance must surely belong to Joe Hockey.

It was 2007. A federal election was nigh and Hockey was at the MCG for an Australian rules game between Richmond and Essendon. Both are working-class clubs and Hockey was the workplace relations minister, charged with trying to salvage Work Choices, which by then was as popular as plague.

There was a crowd of 70,000 at the MCG and, apart from Peter Costello, who was then the No.1 ticket holder for Essendon, the mob was expected to give Hockey the full shebang as he walked out to the centre to toss the coin.

Thinking quickly, Hockey borrowed a Richmond scarf, figuring that if half the crowd booed and the other half cheered, there would be no net suffering. Australians are notoriously adept at detecting fraudulence when it comes to politicians and sport, but in this instance the wiley Hockey triumphed.

Paul Keating's brief flirtation with Collingwood when he needed to broaden support for his leadership push was a disaster. So was Keating's attempt to congratulate the retiring league great Steve ''Blocker'' Roach, by noting how he had ''kicked a lot of tries for Balmain''.

Yeah you can tell is is written by a NSWman because it is inaccurate. Most NSWmen feel the need to tell you NSW is better, whether you are in NSW or they are visiting Qld.

To be fair, it's not just politicians, many Australians pretend to be interested in AFL and Rugby League just to fit in.

Yeah you can tell is is written by a NSWman because it is inaccurate. Most NSWmen feel the need to tell you NSW is better, whether you are in NSW or they are visiting Qld.

Beg your pardon.  There's only one mob with a chip on their shoulders and that's the bananas north of the border.

How's this for an example of a cringefest.

"We are Queenslanders.

"We're the people that they breed tough, north of the border.

"We're the ones that they knock down, and we get up again."
