+xIs metcalfe a 6, 8 or a 10??? IMO his best position is as an 8 or second 10. Mel city play 2 x 8/10’s and a sitting 6 and he has been excellent. Arnold is playing a 4 2 4 where the mids are two sitting 6’s and the wingers drop in behind the 9’s in attack as defacto 10’s and this is creating a 4 222 ala Sydney FC. This negates the role of box to box 8’s. having said that I believe he easily has the skill sets to play one of the the twin sitting 6 in Arnold’s system. Get him on over Duncan any day. This would stop the disposition and poor distribution in the mid field that we have seen in the past two games. I also think the 4222 is far too narrow and doesn’t draw out oppo centre backs and give us any width ie space in the final third.

+x+x+xHow come Uzbekistan are so consistently strong at underage levels but that doesn’t carry over to the senior team? There doesn’t seem to be an obvious reason to me like Nigeria with the fake birth certificates. 🤔 They aren't terrible at senior level, they really should have qualified for the last two or three World Cups but always bottle it on the last day. I'd probably have them up there in the top 6-7 Asian countries tbh. A lot of their players also remain in the Uzbek league which probably hinders their development a bit. The only player in Europe is Eldor Shomurodov for Rostov who looks like a pretty good player the rest are in Uzbekistan or other Asian countries like China and South Korea. Also I believe it is not a very rich country and the association can't afford to make massive improvements like some of the other Asian countries are doing however there is a few academies/schools opening up recently with an ex-Barcelona among others coach on board. i think Uzkekistans best teams (bundyonkor and the other forgot the name) pay their players very very handsomely but being in an exotic and faraway part of the world they dont atrract many foreign players so all the best uzbek players end up at these 2 clubs and dont really push themselves further. Pakhtakor. They were right up there with the big Russian teams in the Soviet league back in the day until an air crash tragedy in the 70s.

Yes there is. In the Arnieball system that Corica and Talay have been playing this season both deploy two wider 10s.

That’s why I said 2 x 8’s at the start. But he and Adrian Luna share the role occasionally is what I mean. He is not a dedicated solo 10 really. From stuff I have read the 10 is dying spot and is being replaced by more 8’s. I think Liverpool have sometimes a flat set of three 8’s. anyway Metcalfe is wasted on the pine in this u23 side. He is classy and has a good brain for the role. We are poorer team without him.

Ryan Strain is apparently going to be eligible for Australia by the time of the Olympics. Big boost for Australia in probably their weakest position. That leaves the strongest Olympics side excluding overage players looking probably like this. Glover Strain, Deng, Souttar, Gersbach Baccus Genreau, McGree Piscopo, Toure, Arzani
Pretty good side and if you add a couple of overage players it looks really good.

Cleur is a one dimensional defensive fullback which doesn’t really suit the system, and Deng should probably play CB. I like Lesiotis a lot, and he’s been good at RB, but he’s a far far better central midfielder than a fullback.

I'm not a baccus fan, so would love to see an overage 6 come in, but I'm a bit stuck for options assuming you're gonna leave our best players where they are. I'd also think another CB should be overage to beef it out a bit, and even a RB since Strain is still pretty green (I do rate him pretty highly though)

+xdunno if i can stay up for this match if i miss it i can watch final or 3rd place playoff which are bigger matches Well, this is a pretty big match nonetheless. Hopefully, it's the one that shuts up all the Arnie-haters. I mean.. I get some of the gripes against him. But a win in the morning, to me, means everything everyone says against him is invalid until he starts losing some WCQ.

Well, Uzbekistan like most AFC countries are squandering a lot of chances could easily be 2-0 up right now.

Saudi Arabia score in the 86th minute to book their place in the final and the Olympics. They could've won 2-0 but the goal was ruled out by VAR - Uzbek keeper up for corner and Saudi breakaway and score in an open net only for it to be ruled offside by VAR
Uzbekistan really should've scored a few. If we don't win tonight I would have much rather played the Saudis in the third place playoff.

Hmm I wouldn't have started Toure or Buhagiar - For me Toure is an impact sub at the moment in my opinion although I don't think anyone else warrants a start.
How is Cleaur in the 11?? Benching Piscopo is questionable too although I don't get the 'hype' about him I would have had him ahead of Buhagiar and probably Italiano.

The heat is sapping and these guys have played 4 games now in two weeks.. most would play 4 games in 5 weeks usually
