The first derby at the scg got 35k

The 2nd one was a reduced match. Weather plays a crucial part in cricket as people are unlikely to turn up if a match is threatened to be rained out or reduced. Lost count of the amount of games this season that have either been no result or decided by the silly duckworth lewis system.

That 35k figure was clearly fudged though.

(VAR) IS NAVY BLUE

Pretty valid excuses - weekday afternoon games wont draw crowds when people are at work. Lots of games have been cut short for one reason or another and they have made a bigger push into regional areas.

your defending of the BBL is a joke. the play weekday afternoon games because they got pigheaded and extended their season into a full home and away fixture. the result of this is the novelty wearing off much earlier than it would have had they kept to a short 3-4 week format. the BBL will end up going the way of the ODI within a few years.

BBL crowds are down 40% from its peak, that isn't me making things up. I don't know the figures but test match cricket attendances look disastrous. My only point is that it is a tough market, we need to be less negative about the a-league crowds which are holding reasonably well, sure it isn't growing but we have to accept that the standard is what it is at the moment, if we can hold out here and gradually improve the standard we can expect more growth.

As for cricket, I'm not sure what they can do, maybe play an extended BBL season with only weekend games and even more music and make sure England or India plays test cricket every year.

In a few years time the HAL wont even have a TV deal, where as the BBL will get another massive TV deal.

You would hope they get something out of ruining the game for TV.

Personally I think BBL is the future of cricket.  The traditional game is way out of step with everything in modern society.

Not saying I like the idea, but I'd put money on it.

I think the opposite. when the BBL dies (and it will), it'll sound the death knell for cricket in Australia. There are only so many ways they can bastardise that sport before people get fed up with it.

I hadn't watched the a-league is a while.

I watched two games last week and thought the crowds had picked up.

Is that the case or am i dreaming?

We shall see FTB.  I take your last point, but we live in the age of bastardisation.  Big Bash is fast food sport for an increasingly undiscerning public.

BBL will never die, 50 over cricket will. The days of people setting aside 8+ hours to watch cricket are over, it’s unrealistic and belongs in the past.

The only joke about cricket is the national team playing games in India during our Summer, it’s absurd.

Big bash similar to A-league. Start of with good crowds, then continue to drop season after season. Question is, who can arrest the slide.

The bbl has entrenched itself in the aussie summer sporting calender. Im going to the tennis tomorrow but i bet at the mcg the melb stars will have a crowd of 30,000 whilst city play in an empty aami park. The bbl was working off an extrodinary high base to start with. You rarely see a sub 10k bbl crowd unless played in a regional country town.

Every team has seen a drop in attendances this season except for the Stars...who coincidentally are flying at the top of the table.

Only the Melbourne teams, have played regional games (not counting canberra games as regional) and Adelaide have played some mid week day time games...other than that there is no valid excuse for the drop.

The percentage drop in the BBL attendances is extremely alarming, and has been the past 4 consecutive seasons.

Not true, i know hobart played a day home match in alice springs where the venue capacity was like 2k. Whichever way you look at it its not a like for like comparison.

Depends what angle you look at it from......this would mean Hobart would have one less game in Hobart meaning people would be more inclined to go to a home game in Hobart to ensure they don't miss the action as there are very few matches leading to higher crowds in Hobart. You can take out regional games and crowds are significantly down regardless.

A-league teams have about 13 home games, big bash teams play at max 7 home games per season... Big bash is averaging just over 18k, Aleague 10k, i think we stack up very well.

Considering its a friday night game which the Nix usually never have and against bottom of the league, its pretty good. Above average and still shows the growth this/last season from a couple years back.

Can't deny that. This first season's efforts by the a-league owners have been nothing short of disgusting. The numbers across the board are atrocious.

Well, I warned everyone years ago!

people are not going to watch this sport at egg ball oval venues.

Time for the A League to fold and start anew!

I've literally given up on A League. Football Live doesn't even work and I can't be bothered trying to fix it.

So I installed a Kodi Box to pick up all the European Football. So now I am watching the real stuff.

As stated on the ratings thread, the only way forward now is a reboot and rebrand at the next tv deal, and hopefully that will be enough, with the financial commitment of the clubs, to get some kind of reduced deal over the line.

The A League is a dead comp barely walking.  The ratings figures clearly show that viable commercial public interest has collapsed.  it won't be back. The brand is now irrevocably on the nose, and figures show that even hardcore fans have given up on teh competition.

And the comp is boring this season.  One sided table, lacklustre  heat affected football.   Very hard to care, even for someone like me.

MVFC tease the fans with the suggestion Rojas was gonna play on friday to get more people through the gate, while it was never a realistic chance. people are starting to see through this shit. the club must be alarmed at 17,000 on friday. that would have to be the lowest big blue crowd in Melbourne since the days of Olympic Park. And you can't blame the fans really. I can barely ever recall going into a big blue where I have expected to lose, and anything else was a bonus.
