+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xWell, the nrl have anounced their intentions. What about aleague, will they anounce on april 22, they will finally finish the last handful of rounds, or sit on their hands-not usually Johnson's style to say or do nothing. Really, what has he done, other than standing down 70% of staff while keeping his fat executive salary ? Do u honestly believe the Lowy’s would have taken pay cuts in the exact same situation?! but but "anything is better than Lowy"... Do you have anything at all going on in your brain apart from this drivel? I wasn't the one who brought up the Lowy's. Yep I brought them up cos you are always complaining about Johnson or ‘the new regime’. Instead of standing down 70% of staff the Lowys probably would stood down everybody but themselves- always looking after their private before the health of Australian football 👍 So funny and misleading. Lowy took no wage, salary or payment as his role as Chairman. Which explains his zero interest in engaging with anyone other than himself and those that helped him stay in power. If he was that self interested then why did he have to be begged to lead the new football era? His heart was in it when he got he job, used all his ability and reputation to gain grants, sponsors, funds etc and keep it going. I was referring to Steve since he was Johnson's predecessor

You forget one thing back in 2010. That TV deal from 2006-2013 was only 17 million a year. We had 10 sides on a salary cap of 2.25 million. thats 22.5 million. 17 million coming in, 22.5 million being spent ment 5.5 milllion in the bad. Meanwhile from 2013-17, the TV money was 40 million a year, Acutally its 37 million because 3 million was spent on Advertising. Meanwhile the Salary cap was $2.5 million or 25 million for 10 teams. So that means 37 million coming in, 25 million on the salary cap spent on 10 sides. that meant 12 million left to spare. Then you had 2017-18, the 1st year of the current deal which was 56 million a year. The Salary cap was 2.9 million or 29 million on 10 sides. 56 million coming in, 29 million coming out, thats 27 million on spare cash for the FFA.

A point that people often miss about Frank Lowy is that, despite his immense wealth, he invested nothing in the A League. He had an early stake in Sydney FC but sold it to David Traktovenko. So, in effect, zero investment.
So much for his love for the game. He and his son acquired immense power and risked nothing. I suppose you could argue that he contributed his influence.
That's all very well, but if Frank Lowy did have a genuine commitment to football in this country, he had the financial resources to transform the A League.
But he didn't. He didn't see fit to risk one cent of his own money. Even his "legacy" project, the WC bid, was funded by taxpayers in its entirety.
It is something of an aphorism that rich men get rich by risking other people's money and not their own. Frank Lowy applied that principle to football, but he could have done so much more.

I can respect Franks reason for not investing his own money in the game. His logic was sound imo, the game had to be sustained independent of one persons wealth - a question that the NBL may be worrying about right now?
Franks motives were misguided though imo, more about finishing the fight he started a couple of decades before. In that regard I think he missed a trick - had he have left behind some form of benevolent fund to improve stadia clubs like South Melbourne might have the ‘Frank Lowy Memorial Stand’ right now 😂

A signficant sponsorship from Westfied, allied with TV money and Hyundai could have made all the difference.

Frank was in it for Frank and even though what he achieved in rebuilding from the NSL debacle was impressive there’s little evidence the game gained commercially out of his presence. Record revenues were achieved but it also came with record costs - Gallop on a $1.5m+ annual contract and hundreds and hundreds of employees at the FFA etc.

There's a good reason why US Soccer renamed the over 100 year old US Open Cup after Lamar Hunt when he died, and why your joke about South Melbourne naming a stand after Lowy is an apt one.

There was also the $6.6m distribution to the State Feds. The $56m from the broadcast rights included $7m in contra and as well as the Leagues it covered Socceroos and Matildas friendlies.

So going by this view..... Andrew Demitriou was the CEO of the AFL from 2003-2016. He was earning 1-2 million a year. Does that mean he should put all of his wages in the AFL? Do you really expect Frank Lowy to pump in 300 million dollars of his own personal wealth for 10 years just for Central Coast Mariners to average 6,000 people a game at gosford? I am sure some rich men get rich by gambling others peoples money. Its just as funny as some people wanting to scrap the Salary Cap for the A-league. Yeah you A-league fans want certain individuals to pump 20-30 million dollars to one A-league club over a 4-5 year period. Why dont you invest money on an A-league club then?

Agreed. The point was that 2006-13 tv rights deal was criminal the Foxtel offered considering that covered the 2010 and 2013 world cup campaigns, not to mention 7 years of A-league. It was about sticking to a budget and having Stability. Once that 2013-17 TV deal happened, No A-league club was going to die off. 37 million was coming in that 2013-14 season and each A-league club salary cap was 2.5 million each or 25 million for all 10 sides. Again..... 37 million in and 25 million out meant the FFA had 12 million left. Hence they kpet under budget and used some cash to pay clubs debts from previous years. Yet you look at the current 2019-2020 season, 56 million in and 29 million out that means 27 million is saved and gone to other areas. So if the FFA was getting 56 million a year in tv rights money, why would frank Lowy invest 200 million from his own personal wealth to prop up the A-league?

An interesting excerpt from an article on Raelene Castles resignation. Football is not alone. "Wiggs runs private equity firm Archer Capital and is chair of Supercars after Archer bought the business for a reported AU$180 million from SEL in 2011. It is now reportedly worth about half its purchase price and is in the middle of difficult broadcast negotiations to renew its deal with Fox Sports and Ten. "

An impressively off the mark post. Everyone who has a Fox or Kayo sub or buys a match day ticket invests in the A League. I can guarantee Frank Lowy never paid for any of these things. The comparison with Demetriou is ridiculous. The only valid comparison there is with Gallop. Nice try but absolutely no cigar.

Just to be clear. Frank Lowy did not pump one dollar of his own into Australian Football ever.
Also what an amazing coincidence that the FFA is on the verge of losing it's cash cow & the next trick from the FFA media lapdogs is to suggest the abolition of the state federations. We all know that the FFA has wanted that juicy state federation money & assets for decades now. Transparent doesn't begin to describe this little power play.

Need a favour ...
I spoke to a potential client today, who is close to Mariner senior management ....
The upshot he told me was positive... iAL would like to continue with FOX if possible as it gives them time to develop IAL with a guaranteed income base.
But if not there are plans in place, streaming is not out of the question.
The upshot and key driver is if you look at the owners of the A-League clubs, aside from Jerks, Mariners and potentially AU, they all have owners with deep pockets and lots of business smarts. That an ownership group with the business backgrounds of the A-League clubs could not equal or better what FFA can do meaning he says while desirable not critical is the Fox deal to the owners.
But this is one guy, well placed mind you and well connected... have you heard anything similar coming out of the Roar.

+x+x+xA point that people often miss about Frank Lowy is that, despite his immense wealth, he invested nothing in the A League. An impressively off the mark post. Everyone who has a Fox or Kayo sub or buys a match day ticket invests in the A League. I can guarantee Frank Lowy never paid for any of these things. The comparison with Demetriou is ridiculous. The only valid comparison there is with Gallop. Nice try but absolutely no cigar. Well.... Everyone bags out Gallop. I think Gallop has done most of his job correctly. At least under Gallop, we have been stable. Yeah we only got one Free to air game each week on channel 10, but its better than no free to air games at all. What makes me laugh is you want Random Clowns on here wanting to spend 100 million dollars on an A-league club just for the hell of it. You got others that are keen to scrap the cap in which the Salary cap is the main reason teams are in an even playing field.

Gallop did the unforgivable. He refused to stand up for the fans, the code and it basically alienated a reasonable portion of the existing fan base that haven’t returned to date.
Going to war with your existing fan base was probably the single worst act in the game in the last 15 years and the tremors are still felt years on.

I agree we have been stable, but we also didn't grow. To the point we went backwards due to fans boredom with the league. When we have 10 teams, that is not the time to be consolidating. At a minimum we should have been consolidating at 14 (ideally 16) and we should have been putting out benchmarks to achieve that

Please quote me suggesting that I want "Random Clowns" here spending "100 million dollars on an A League club". Good idea to avoid misrepresenting what other posters have written if you hope to be credible.

+xArticle on ESPN saying season will re commence on August 1, players to start training 1 July, what a joke. That’s pretty much in line with grassroots football (start play in mid July with a three week training lead in) most likely there wont be any crowds allowed in this side of Christmas so the new season will most likely be delayed until December/January anyway with grassroots wrapping up a month earlier.
Not sure what anyone expected tbh. This was always going to be ugly
