- Didn't offer him a professional contract.
-  Was getting paid 60 bucks a week.
- Living away from immediate family.
-  ran out his contract and took a gamble to go overseas
-  Turns out he's actually a very good player.
- Wait, wasn't he the guy who trained with us for 3 years?
- Aarhus where's our 330k?

Sorry Brisbane fans but this is bullshit, if they think they are entitled this.

I hope the club goes hard and gets the maximum they are entitled to under the accepted international rules in these transfer situations. I'm sick of SBS framing most articles about how evil/incompetent/useless Aus clubs are in situations like these and how virtuous players/mangers/foreign clubs are in their dealings with HAL clubs.

I know nothing of international transfer rules or how the youth set up works - but regardless of what we paid him, if the club contributed in a significant way to his development through the expertise of Roar paid coaches and support staff, in a structure with Roar paid admin and management staff, then it is fair that the Roar benefit from whatever the internationally recognised compensation is given for such things.

If I want to be a doctor I have to pay my way through medical school do I not? I would line up professional sporting people with that sort of elite program.

"In the hands of the judge" is a good enough answer for me.

Not a bad analogy, though I doubt your medical school would then claim a six figure fee from the first hospital that employed you?

The rules Roar are using are designed to compensate clubs that invested in his training. In this case it’s three A League clubs but tomorrow it could be a HAL club, plus an NPL .... what he was paid is irrelevant but sadly the article try’s that angle.

So if he had signed from an NPL club who pay most of their players $0 .... they shouldn’t get paid either???

I thought “football fans” were in favour of transfer fees?

This is a well known regulation designed to trickle money down the football eco-system to clubs that develop talent despite having little money - I’m not sure why it’s even in dispute?

4th place sucks. It’s like Goldilocks:

not high enough to shut up the critics, not low enough to shut up the supporters.

OK I concede. You cunningly dragged it out of me. Top 4 likelihood 0.1%, unlikely 99.9%.

Does that make a difference? ;)

Yes!

We both predicted the top 4 finish 7 months ago :)

Yay Roar!

Locked in a top part of the table finish. Funny end to the regular season - we could have been 3rd or out of finals with only a couple of games to go.

Winners as a club for the season in my eyes - now we can dream of the next game.

Mine too.

It proved the nonsense that we had for the previous 2-3 seasons was unnecessary:

* Spent less money and got a better team. So it was never about the budget.
* Trained on the same grass and finished fourth. So the training pitch isn’t too hard/too soft/too long/too short.
* Didn’t have massive injury problems and we looked fit all season. So it’s about the training they get not something in the Logan water.
* Had the same owners so they weren’t holding the coach back.
* Fixed the leaking defence so, it can be done John & Ross - you just have to try.

Overall a decent season. If we had started better over those first few games who knows.

And Warren Moon looks the goods - no worries over coaching changes in the close season and can look forward to next season with some optimism, including a possible (no doubt short) ACL campaign thanks to the Nix.

Agree with most of what you say.  Just a couple of points.

Maybe John and Ross don't know how to fix a weak defence.

Warren does look the goods, but the defence looked a little more brittle in the few games he has been in charge.  If he can sort that, then we are good to go..

All in all a great improvement on where we were a year ago.

I suspect the shakiness since returning from lockdown is due to the absence of AON. He really stepped up after the Olyroo's stint, allowing JOS to play a more forward role. Shows how pivotal the DM spot is. I look at SFC, and they won in a canter, but are far less secure without BON and JB picking off the opposition. That give me hope if we get to play them.

I think you are right about AON it was the same at the start of the season when AON was out of form (and then Away) we did not look all that composed at the back and JOS had to play deeper as he is doing now as well.

However i dont think you are right with SFC, they have conceeded 4 less goals this season (with 1 less game) with Brattan instead of BON and JB. it was clear from our game against SFC that brattan can command the DM spot by himself (it was clear that we needed 2 players to do the job that he did alone).

DM is a spot that we really havent nailed this season, AON was good for a bit but still a long way from being dominant. a dominant DM and a lethal striker and we are a championship team.

I think that Robbie said "I want goals of course, but what I really care about is that we don't concede ever in the first half, and the opposition has to be lucky or brilliant to score in the second half". Waz Moon obviously plays a more open style with much more attacking from the start. I do not think we are as sharp up front as most other teams, so sacrificing our defence in any way makes it harder to get anything out of a game if we concede (especially early). Watching Perieas (?) for WU stroll round the back of players in the last two games has me very concerned about our left hand defensive side. His freedom behind Corey and Gillesphey with Besart making runs into the box is deadly for our slow defence.

More attractive, faster flowing football at the expense of goals conceded is not good for me. The 5 subs hurt us, as we can no longer be a fortress for half a game then come out and attack with superior fitness and win over the top. Even Ange would have had to adjust strategy with 5 subs available because you just can't wear the opposition down in 80 minutes then come over the top of them to snatch a late victory.

I know that others prefer our current style more than our dour defensive strategy. I can understand that.

SFC just have not come back the same post-break. Barbarouses is the worst I can remember seeing him and not by a small amount. Doesn't mean he isn't dangerous but he has lost something significant. They looked much better with Grant back as expected.

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

Moon has kept the same structure but has a different philosophy to RF - he’s far more adventurous which definitely makes us look more vulnerable at the back.

Interesting to see that since the return,we have been 6th best with only one win.But below WSW lol.
NJ,MC,WU &AU best. All above us with  more than two wins and NJ and MC undefeated.
SFC ,PG and WP below CCM.
MV last and WP second last.

Unfortunately for us we get to play one of the two best  form teams .
Tough turnaround for whoever wins.Just two days against a fresh SFC.Ridiculous really.May as well just put SFC into the GF.Five substitutes will be critical.
Imagine if the game goes to extra time.

I don’t think Roar have anything to fear other than not being able to score many goals. I hope we’ve been practising penalties because I think that’s going to be our way forward.

This is an absolutely disgraceful decision by the complete numpty, biased and incompetent government we have in Qld. NRL and AFL players can break their rules, and come and go from NSW and not have to isolate, but football players who have been in a bubble have to quarantine in hotels for two weeks. FFS!

I am torn on this one.

I would have argued for all returning sport players to have to isolate the same whether they are continuing or ending a season, and I have more of a beef with NRL and AFL not being bound the same.

If the risk is as great for all players (arguably even more for the cuddling football codes) then letting active players self isolate 'because their season is not over' makes a mockery of the threat that the measures are in to counter.

Ridiculous to say you can come and go every week but at the end of the season you need to be cleaned properly.

Fine to treat all the same - not fine to say it is different because the season has ended.

Irrelevant what other states are doing.

At least they have just over a week to see if they can get another answer ;)

In the bigger scheme of things we could all be in lock down by the time they return if they don’t contain the Wacol breakout.

Given the enormous consequences and the potential for a second lockdown Melbournian style I don’t think the angst should be that Roar players have to quarantine, it’s that (it appears) other codes players don’t for some reason.

So this is morale shattering? It's an excuse in case  they lose today. I would of thought knowing your $100,000 contract will only be worth 1/2 that next year would be more morale shattering. You Q/Landers will try and find any excuse.

Yeah, while Broncos players are out having lunch at the pub, Roar players will be in hotel quarantine. This is what happens when Premier Palaszczuk is in vote winning mode. There’s votes in being tough on borders but votes to be lost in being tough on Broncos.

Quarantine and testing still has me totally perplexed.
Noone has been able to tell me how testing literally hundreds of  thousands of people that give negative results is sufficient to avoid quarantine, when tests are only 80% accurate.
Yet tests on people in quarantine  are irrelevant if test results are negative.

So if tests cant confirm you are safe when crossing a border or returning from overseas. Why is it they can confirm you are safe once within a state?

I suspect governments know more than they are saying.

Now where is my tinfoil hat?

Thought we played ok tonight. Problem is when we play the style we play you actually need wingbacks who can cross. Hingert and Brown just not good enough crossers of the ball.
I’d reckon there’s no one in A-League history with so little to show for hundreds of balls into the box as Hingert.

We pretty much played our normal game tonight.Consistent ,but not quite the cutting edge to win.
Pretty similar to WU really.

I hope Moon has some plans to change the squad and style .Because we really need to be a threat with fast counter attacks rather than predictable slow build up play all the time.If we are to be serious challengers for a title.
We just dont have the quality to win consistently through grit

Welll done to WU.

Thought we played ok tonight. Problem is when we play the style we play you actually need wingbacks who can cross. Hingert and Brown just not good enough crossers of the ball.
I’d reckon there’s no one in A-League history with so little to show for hundreds of balls into the box as Hingert.

Aldred's stupid shirt pull gave the only goal in the game. Open play we held our own.

We hit the post, and again stuffed up a number of really good opportunities. I don't blame Hingert and Brown - there were enough opportunities in that game to score. Story of the season really - great opportunities but no-one able to step up consistently and take the tap in or reflex shot.

Flat finish to a progressively improved season. I would have preferred some open field brilliance by Diamanti to have given them the victory rather than a bloody, bloody, bloody stupid free kick on the edge of the box. Take that out and the game goes to either side with equal chance.

For Hingert, put Berisha or JMac in the box and I say we score a lot more than our hit and miss forwards this season.

I can't say well done to WU I am afraid. I can say well done to Berisha and Diamanti, and to other individual players, but that bullsh!t sucking up the end of the game is not well done - it is what is wrong with football the world over and Rudan reeks of it. Bitter - you betcha. Not the first time they have won a game by not playing football.

When I wear their colours, I am the club.
