Absolutely spot on.

Hope the people that be at the club read your post, re-read it 3 more times, print it, paste it on the walls of their office and read it every single day.

The key to a competitive/dominant team as you have said is the 'spine'. You ideally need 3 very good players and the other just needs to be competent. Then you need a hard working forward pack ideally with a good front rower who doubles as an enforcer/leader. The backline looks after itself if you have speed and skill but you don't need marquee players, just guys that are capable and know how to find the try line. Obviously there are exceptions and you might get lucky with a junior that becomes an overnight sensation but the point is there is generally no shortage of good or adequate players in the forwards and the outside backs that come onto the market every year.

After that, and probably the key: you need a great coach!

Look at the Roosters, they started their dominant run with:
1.Teddy 6. Keary 7. Cronk 9.Friend (competent) Forward leader/enforcer: Waerea-Hargreaves
Storm: 1. Papenhausen 6. Munster 7. Hughes (competent) 9. Smith  Forward leader/enforcer: Bromwich

Penrith have done phenomenally well given Edwards and Luai's aren't elite but they have improved alot this season and are running mostly on the back of their 7 and 9 with Fisher-Harris leading the way.

So with that being said where does that leave our bulldogs?

Fullback: Hopoate/Meaney. Options are bare at the moment although there are a handful of really good fullbacks in the comp. I think we need to bide our time
Five-Eighth: A lot depends on who you have playing at 7. Does he need to have game management and kicking skills or is he just a ball runner? Options are Averillo and Wakeham. Burton would be good but he doesn't look likely for next season.
Halfback: Lewis and Blake Green. Obviously Green will get the job when he is fit and will handle the kicking and game management which comes in handy considering he will be partnering a relatively inexperienced 5/8th.
Hooker: JMK at the moment but we need to hope Cameron Smith plays on and we can pinch either Grant or Brandon Smith.

Our best hope for 20201:
1. Meaney (Stick with him as I believe there is room for improvement at fullback. Move Hoppa to centre. I think Meaney would benefit from having quality in 6/7/9 if we can get it)
6. Averillo (This is his preferred position and there is no doubt he has talent but we have to find the right number 7 to partner him. If it doesn't work out target Burton for 2022)
7. Green (I'm not a fan. There is a reason no one re-signs this bloke and just look at how good the Warriors are going without him. That said he has a kicking game and experience which we sorely need. Quality 7's are severely lacking in this competition but we'll need to find something for 2022 as Lewis is not the answer)
9. Smith (This guy looks like a Bulldog. We won't have a quality 7 for a while and god knows where the next great fullback will come from but we can not miss out on this opportunity to get a quality 9.)

I like Brandon Smith but I think people overlook that the best football he plays 99% of the time is NOT at hooker. In fact, I've seen him have some pretty ordinary Brandon Smith type games at hooker, including his last a couple of weeks ago when he was dead boring and couldn't stick a pass. Exception was one, and only one that I can remember, game for The Kiwi's and even then most of his good work was from his power running, not slick service from DH or game management.

I really think anyone (inc and especially us) signing him as DH on DH money is gonna get burnt when they realise he's best picked at #13 and you're now looking around for a new DH.

I'll take any hooker who's prime instinct is to run first, and passing comes a distant second.

We have for far too long (with exception of Cooky) had hookers who 99% of the time look to pass and telegraph the fact they want to pass, instead of playing heads up football.

The purpose of rugby league is to score. If you pick up the ball from dummy half, your first instinct should be to score. If you cant score yourself, you then pass to someone who can.

This predetermined play that we have needs to change. All the top hookers in the game are not the best at their craft coz of nice passes. They are the best because they can read an opportunity and make the most of it. That usually means darting out from dummy half, or engaging defenders before passing.

I'll take Brandon Smith  ANY day of the week and twice on Sundays. And I wouldn't regret it. He shits on anyone we have or had since Cooky

I would not say that
.
However it is true there are plenty of questions over 21.

Enforcer -I think Odgen/Toomaga  may be able to step up, but I would recruit.
Fullback - Meaney or Averillo might be the answer.
5/8 - Averillo or Wakeham might be the answer.
Half - Green a short term fix at best.
Hooker - definitely a recruitment priority.

We may end up ticking 2/5 or 3/5 when this season we ticked 1/5 with Foran and at times 0/5 without him.

However we still have some cash and some good young lower grade players, no reason why we can't be 4/5 or 5/5 in 2022/2023. 2021 might not be a total solution, but should be better than most of 2013-2020, that is becuase we may finally have a good coach...

The coach is 6 on the list useless without 1-5, but essential in making 1-5 count.

It’s not a question of whether you think Brandon Smith is a better DH than who we got or had, it’s a question of where Brandon Smith plays his best football.

I was hoping Thompson would be our front row enforcer but I've been really disappointed in his ability to break out of tackles and bend the line back. I'm willing to give him an off-season though and see how he backs up next year.
I truly believe if we get the other pieces right (6/7/9) then Meaney could do a job for us at fullback. If not we could give Averillo a go there and make a play for Burton.
We know we will fall short at halfback (Like 50% of the comp, maybe more) but if we get 1/6/9 right we can cover for that. Ideally in 12 months time we have at least 2/4 spine positions sorted.

I'm giving Thompson a shot with a full off season, he needs more footwork, he doesn't have the size to simply run straight.

I think we all agree he is an update on Tolman, he used to be a winger, he is fast for a prop.

Personally I'm more disappointed in Napa.

We are lacking a real leader in the forwads.

But if I'm honest game management is our biggest issue, our young halves and forwards should improve with better coaching and more NRL experience.

We are all aware of momentum in games, clubs also have momentum in seasons, winning breeds confidence and energy that improves decision making, it is a feedback loop.

Players in a side with momentum always look better and perform better.

We need to set a standard and get results early in the season.

Fullback and the centres have been a shambles all year and halfback hasn't been much better. A lot of that is due to team selection and coaching.

Fix up these areas our forwards might look better, they are not far off the pace.

#GoDogs

We've lost the "kicking out of danger" from Lewis.
Last time we had a similar situation (I think Raiders game) and Foran and other half couldbt get us out of trouble.

We are making better metres running the ball out but the loss of Lewis' kicking game is huge.

I really think we need to get to 32 points and then hope we defend well.  Hope they can do it for Jackson in his 200th.

Should have checked becuase it was close to the sideline but the current score is a fair reflection.

We need to defend better... I'm not a big fan of Lafai's defence.

I hope Wakeham and Averillo try to play some footy that is our best chance we need one more try and one good try save.

I've always said EVERY single try should be checked by video.

But traditionalists want less intervention with more horrendous errors like that.

Yeah but they get them wrong when they go up there anyway... The Souths no-try was not a Penalty...

Wakeham and Averillo don't have lomg kicks, they do have more footy.

Still a winnable game, we need to win it with our defence.

I hope the last 10 minutes weren't indicative of our upcoming second half defence
