Board broadens its expertise

Adelaide United is pleased to advise supporters that the Board has taken the decision to invite four new persons to participate at Board level for the Club. The decision recognises the need for increased expertise in various portfolios. Importantly the invitations have been accepted and as such we are delighted to advise the following:

• Ian Smith - Partner at Bespoke Approach - a premier corporate advisory firm: Ian will advise on the important matters of Government Relations and Corporate Development. Ian is a long time football tragic - Brighton and Hove Albion fan, and of course the Reds
• John Konstandopolous - Managing Director, Apex Steel, John is the Club's newly appointed Compliance and Integrity Officer. The position oversees every aspect of Corporate Governance at Board level inclusive of finance and compliance matters. John played for Port Pirates and West Adelaide and has since supported football at club and state levels .Apart from United, he follows Olympiacos FC in Greece and Chelsea.
• Francis Wong - Encounter Australia: Francis will oversee International Branding. He is a Government appointed Business Ambassador, Chairs the Asian Tourism Industry Advisory Panel and is a board member of the Australian Tourism Export Council. There is no better connection to Asia than Francis who also follows Manchester United and DPMM FC Brunei.
• Joe Borelli - Chief Executive Officer of Integrated Waste Services and Envirobale. Joe played senior football for Adelaide City in the NSL days and been great supporter of the code at club and state level where IWS currently sponsor the junior teams at Campbelltown. Joe will play a pivotal role in growing our commercial base. Apart from the Reds, he is a Chelsea fan.

Ian, John, Joe and Francis bring a wealth of business acumen to the Club. That coupled with a passion for Adelaide United is great news for football.

Member update
We have several initiatives in place for the coming year:

• Match day upgrades- Each match a Member will be drawn from the crowd to enjoy the following match from a corporate suite. For the first game against Victory, our very first 10 year member will enjoy the experience.
• Signed match day balls shall be presented to lucky members each game.
• 2013 Tapestry Members Day - Sunday August 18
• Members Only Training Session @ Hindmarsh- Sunday October 6. Entry by Season/Member ticket. Membership and Merchandise available from the Club. Full access to players for a signing session.
• Year Book out in July - your reference for the season, event calendar, player information, future direction etc.

Adelaide Supporters Web Site, Facebook, Twitter and the Club Web Site
We well understand the pent up interest in the Club. To ensure we keep you up to date, the Club has restructured its personnel to ensure fans are kept as up to date as is possible.

Adelaide United Members/Supporters Club Inc
We convey our appreciation to all those members who have joined AUMC Inc in addition to match day ticketing. Progress is being made, although it is conceded that the direct member benefit is not always clear. The concept is in its second year, the Club in its tenth. The establishment of AUMC Inc is based on clear strategies going forward:

• A move towards a more traditional membership based Club model
• To improve the Club's eligibility to secure Government Grants as an incorporated body as distinct from that of being a privately owned entity
• Tax concession eligibility should the Club establish a social facility
• The Constitution outlines the Association Objects which primarily relate to the promotion of football with secondary objects related to social facilities. There are many supporter groups in football and other sports which focus on the games and match day experiences as their primary focus . Based on our feedback to date, many supporters favour this focus. We will take this matter up with the membership.

Hindmarsh Stadium Lease
The Club has previously advised and repeats that there is no commercial benefit for Adelaide United from the AEC / Coopers sponsorship - the Club was not involved in any discussions. We must correct a media assertion that it "is a clever ploy by Reds management" in terms of reduced stadium costs for the Club, sadly for us that is not the case. AEC is the beneficiary of the sponsorship.

Kind Regards,
Glenn Elliott

Agreed, happy to see some movement that recognises some of the gripes fans have held for 2-3 seasons now. The flip-flop in my keen-ness for this season commencing compared to only 3 months ago is remarkable

Then he could go eyeball <> eyeball with Muscat again.
Personally, if he couldn't play for us I'd prefer Perth, Phoenix, Heart, WSW, Roar, or one of our NPL teams ( seems West Adelaide like recruiting top players ) NEVER Victree!!! or Sydney - stuff the big city clubs!

I really liked Usucar when he played for us. I think it was around the time the wheels were falling off in the Coollen era with Slory etc, but Usucar seemed to have the passion that many others in the club lacked. I remember him standing up to the opposition a number of times and getting stuck in. Agree with the General - he would be a good player to have in the team now, although would have messed with a visa spot.

On another point, I see in the paper today Val has an article about how Gombau wants to scout the local leagues to find talent. The inference is that we've been lacking in this area. Can someone explain why this perception exists (I'm not saying it's right or wrong). I know we've found some good local young players, but we've also lost some to interstate clubs. But wouldn't that be normal? Does United have good relations with the local clubs, or is that also an issue?

In that horror Coolen season (which i try so hard to forget about) he was pretty much the only one who looked upset when we lost home games consistently 3-0. Not saying he loved the club any more than some others, some people just REALLY hate losing but he earned my respect for sure when everyone else lost it that year

I'm shuddering thinking of some memories from that season.

Hindmarsh was an awful place to be. My God the stands were restless that year.

Even I launched a tirade at Rini from 2 metres away as i stormed out in the 88th minute (first time in my life i haven't stayed till the end)that game that Griffin was sitting next to him on the bench...maybe vs GCU? Nearly got in a fight coz of it. To his credit Rini held back coz he was not happy that's for sure

Meh, he deserved it

Ok...calming down again

Coolen spent a lot of time around the local leagues, Kossie was pretty anti them as far as talent went though - just thought that they were a little too much like the HAL, full of journeymen players.

Hi,

I was lucky enough to purchase a signed Adelaide United Shirt at a charity auction on the weekend and was wondering if someone could help me out or point me in the right direction at the club to get hold of some hi res images from the stadium of the reds in action. Want to make something up that has the shirt and then some images of the team.

Any idea of who I can talk to at the club.

Thanks

New signings begin to arrive in rAdelaide:)
http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/adelaideunited/news-display/New-Reds-start-rolling-in/71620
Sanchez and Elrich will officially begin training tomorrow(tuesday 30/7/13) and the club is confident they will quickly get up to speed with the rest of the squad.

The last of the Reds’ off season signings, Spanish winger Sergio Cirio, is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

Attended the trial game v Cumberland Utd last night.
Couple of off-field observations...
-Graphpak going under(sad as it is for those employees), forced the club to take 'merchandising' under its wing..they bought that trailer that was on site last night to follow through on an oft forwarded suggestion...sell merch at these trial games. The new 10th anniversary scarves by sekem have come up a treat. I like them a lot.
- it could have been was the über-long off season whetting the appetite but as I walked into Santos Stadium last night I detected a definite vibe of excitement&optimism in the crowd, which was pretty healthy for a Tuesday night IMO. entry fees should have raised a bit of coin for the Foxes.
By God it was good to see some faces I haven't seen since last April. Trial games signal the iminent return of football, this makes me happy, I am sick of the egg ball dominating my FSN:)
Under-strength Adelaide United a success in first hit-out
Val Migliaccio
The Advertiser

ADELAIDE United's first match under new boss Josep Gombau proved to be a raging success at Santos Stadium on Tuesday night.

Adelaide beat local SA club Cumberland 4-1 in entertaining fashion despite missing eight key personnel with Jeronimo Neumann bagging a hat trick after Cumberland took a shock lead.

East Asian Cup Socceroos skipper Eugene Galekovic and Dario Vidosic, imports Sergio Cirio and Iasais Sanchez and Tarek Elrich and Cassio, Bruce Djite and Osama Malik all skipped the clash but it didn't deter United from registering its first pre-season win in style.

No, there will be the standard romantic time of Josep worship from Val and then, about six to ten games in to the season - the tide will begin to turn and Val will find it easier to write damning stories and start leaking from disgruntled staff and fans.

At least that's what history will suggest.

Hoping the yet to be named NPL team that Adelaide United play on Friday August 9th will be West Adelaide. Even if they are in the state league they are unbeaten in 22 league games winning 20 of them.

for Nostalgia effect this would be great.

Woh, interesting to see the much vaunted Spanish recruits starting to arrive. Not to place TOO BIG of an expectation ( ) but given Gombau and everything, the standard they are coming from, slight air of mystery or unfamiliar territory for A-League, despite their backgrounds...

We are kind of hoping they will be a big hit in the A-League, especially recent Segunda Division player, Sanchez. If not so much, then hopefully that isn't reflective of Gombau's reign itself and he IS a big success.

It sounds a promising start! Especially with so many first teamers out - it shows the back ups and younger players are already learning their roles and playing to the system.

That's the idea, no matter who they are, if they are experienced or new, they can come in and perform to the role, within the wider system. That's what Ange has done at his clubs and it should be similar with Gombau.

I didn't see you :( Would have been good to catch up :) When Val was leaving I asked him if he was leaving happy

best article you will see from him all year ?

No, there will be the standard romantic time of Josep worship from Val and then, about six to ten games in to the season - the tide will begin to turn and Val will find it easier to write damning stories and start leaking from disgruntled staff and fans.

At least that's what history will suggest.

And that's when 'the piss' starts to emanate from 'the ant'? :p

Josep Gombau's fatherly approach to Adelaide United

Quote:
NEW Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau granted VAL MIGLIACCIO a spot on the bench before kick-off against Cumberland United and this is how it went down

“PLEASE, this is my first game and maybe I will say a little bit too much to my team,’’ Josep Gombau said as he greeted me about six hours before kick-off against Cumberland United on Tuesday night.

“I have not been here that long and I still have to know some more about my team.’’

About 30 minutes before kick-off I was escorted towards the coaches’ bench at Santos Stadium by football manager Michael Petrillo.

Gombau spotted me, stopped talking to his players and greeted me with a handshake.“Welcome,’’ he said. “I hope you enjoy the match.’’

He then turned away and gave most of his side upbeat yet subtle instructions. From my perspective it looked like Gombau was akin to a good-hearted father talking to his young sons. There were lots of smiles but at the same time there was mutual respect. What I had observed in Gombau’s debut match in charge of the Reds blew me away.

Armed with a pen and a huge notepad, he was always talking to his No. 2, compatriot Pau Marti, in their native Spanish during the 90-minute encounter.

Gombau’s left hand was writing furiously as he jotted down notes in separate columns for each Reds player.

I managed to understand some of the Spanish dialogue - given I studied the language many years ago.

Gombau was relaying messages to the three Spanish speakers in the starting XI - Jeronimo Neumann, Fabio Ferreira and Marcelo Carrusca - in his native tongue.Interestingly the trio spoke to each other in Spanish on the pitch when they were either calling for the ball or making runs.

The language will be a trend that will grow even more once fellow Spanish speakers Isaias Sanchez, Sergio Cirio and Cassio start matches. But Gombau’s first words as a boss were directed at defender Jon McKain.

“Good, McKain,’’ said Gombau about seven minutes into the clash when the stopper was anticipating many of Cumberland’s forward movements. He then encouraged his XI especially when players were making good runs and held their positioning - a major key to the new Gombau philosophy.

He stayed calm but did raise his voice when a ball from Cam Watson was played backwards under no pressure.

Like speculative long balls, unnecessary backward passes will become extinct - eventually.“Hey, play the ball in front, we need to progress,’’ he said. It was evident during Adelaide’s 4-1 win over Cumberland that Gombau’s key trio during the clash was Neumann, Carrusca and Ferreira.

Gombau was very pleased with Ferreira, the man the Reds nicknamed “Flecha’’ (arrow in Portuguese) throughout the match.

He then applauded the passage of play where Carrusca, “Flecha” and Neumann combined to set up the equaliser. He only once raised his voice slightly when Awer Mabil tried a party-trick backheel.

It wasn’t the backheel which fired up Gombau, it was where Mabil decided to try it on - just over the halfway line - which cost Adelaide possession before Cumberland counterattacked. But as the game wore on Gombau again acted like a father to the Reds.

“Hey Flecha cansado (Hey, Ferreira, tired?), como estas Carrusca? (How are you feeling, Carrusca?) ’’ he said.

“Esta bien Jero? (are you OK Neumann?).’’ And as each player was substituted he’d stand up greet his Red with a handshake and then talk for about 10 seconds with an arm on the back of their shoulders.

Gombau, however, did jump off his bench in a rage once during the clash. Harsh words were directed at Neumann when Adelaide was in attack and the ball was flying about Cumberland’s box in the 63rd minute.

“Jero...?’’ he screamed before turning to the subs on the bench. “Why did he stop? Why didn’t he press in there?’’

For the remainder of the clash Gombau kept his dialogue calm. “Better second half, huh?’’ he said before signing autographs for Reds fans who are hoping that they had just witnessed the start of the Gombau revolution.

FIVE THINGS ABOUT JOSEP
1. He’s a communicator who gives his players ownership of what is unfolding.

2. He’s an astute student of the game. He takes notes as he tries to discover the good and bad points of his squad.

3. He is mostly calm on match day. When he raises his voice players know it’s for good reason.

4. He will always communicate to the other seven fluent Spanish speakers of the club in Spanish.

5. His philosophy is taking shape. But the Reds will take time to learn. Patience is the key.

A much nicer article from Val - has he finally dropped the agenda, or is this just some form of honeymoon phase before the negative articles come out again?

Also, nice to see Gombau get stuck into the players when necessary. Watson
