Apparently the u20 team is a strong cohort and i'm familiar with some of the players there, others I dont know well but I was impressed in how they played against the likes of England and Portugal and displayed a technical level similar to them which was encouraging.

I agree surprised Bennie is not there unless he will play in the a-league all stars or is injured? Assuming Irankunda will be there too?

Interesting how many names i havent heard of

Weird bennie not selected. Quite a few others got a league minutes not selected. I have slightly more faith in morgan than vidmar since he finished 4th for the olyroos

Mo Toure might get a call up - he's not locked in with us yet

He can't because he represented Australia in the same U23 cycle

No entry for U20 Asian Cup 2025 yet. Wouldn't mind hosting that. Top 4 go to U20 WC 2025 in Chile.

We're onto the women's Asian Cup which is ok but I'd love to host an U20 tournament.

Our coaching was poor ok.
Disagree with Merricks comments ok.
Doesn't Merrick have some nouse about players and the game with all his experience ?
I seem to recall he coached a pretty damn good winning MV.

Therefore lets consider all these current players have been coached pretty good through their AL careers to date, from Jnrs to Snrs.
Alot of coaching and playing Snr games.
Considering we didn't score 1 goal and obviously Vidmars tournament instructions didn't suit, has "individualism" been coached out of these budding up and coming wonders ?
Surely there is one or 2 kids who can take on a low block defense dribble past 2 and shoot f ya.
Are they trained to stick to the plan like I watch AL week in week out.
I have watched Volpato last couple of years take defense's on even score for eg, he was let go by 2 AL clubs.

It's an interesting comment about individuality. I remember the Toure brothers old man saying something along those lines. Encouraged his boys to show their personalties on the field because no-one else was encouraging it.

I reckon Irankunda would have helped. Our defence held up and Irankunda is good for some goals. There were obviously other issues too and not trying to say he's the saviour. He may have also struggled in Vidmars system but we'd have had better odds with him out there imo.

Most of our players who could unpick a defence were left in Europe or injured. Volpato, Robertson, Bos, Nieuwenhof all would have been handy.

Sure Mr HK lets call him the supreme Aussie Outlier, good bar for use nonetheless.
Mind you his early development days was all local Sydney metro and his early teens mighty Marconi for some 3/4yrs so lets own some of his development locally untill at 15yrs Leeds picked him up.
Remove the icons ok but imo the current ones are not breaking into top leagues no matter how much stat grinding you do very well Grazor and kudos to you I do admire how much you delve deep down whereas I look at players at face value and performance on the pitch moreso.
Your mention of "attackers" getting better ? yer ? sorry I see players who are no doubt better on the ball, with the ball but attack ?
Well I'm missing something here for what we keep lacking is finish.
What attacking mid fiedler is peppering the keeper let alone hitting the net now and then ?
3 games no goals, ooh bad luck posts hit sure you get that BUT again where are the attacking midfielders taking on defense's ? openning holes a plenty ? having a cracking shot on goal more than not let alone splitting backlines so as one of our strikers put it away ?
We lack this forever at Snr NT levels AND we're still lacking it through these new gens by the look of it.
So were going to develop a better all round squad than the GG - well I sure as well hope it changes alot more than that afetr all this time.

Most of our best olyroos aren't available which is an issue though I would still claim some of the selected squad have a good chance

I think this is worth its own thread as I ended up doing a bunch of digging into history to make my case

If Toure & co had their shooting boots on, then we would have gotten out of the group stage. Oh & Vidmar needed to select Irankunda - end of.

I can make it easier for u.

No player has an early career  of kewell, viduka or aloisi (tho toure is close to aloisi) tho it is hard to compare kewell since he never played nsl. If u remove those three players then the current youth are roughly equaling the early careers of rest of the golden gen and in some positions exceeding them. The attackers are getting better but still down from the benchmark of the golden gen. So we will produce a team better at building up play and equal in defence to the gg but there will still be a gap up top unless a player blooms late

Sure Mr HK lets call him the supreme Aussie Outlier, good bar for use nonetheless.

I don't see that. Everybody is blaming the coach. The article released from Robbie Slater blaming "the lack of talent" is getting flamed by everybody. He is an old-head with tall-poppy syndrome. I imagine he didn't watch any of the games and is acting on his confirmation bias, not to mention he is one of the boys with Vidmar.

I actually came here to say that I'm happy with the response from the public not blaming the players and the lack of talent. It's very evident we would have higher chances and with a bit of luck could qualify with a full-strength squad and also goes to show the importance some of these made-unavailable Euro players are to their respective clubs. It's no surprise the Euros that were selected like Youlley, Italiano, Kuol, Toure etc, don't play. Even though youthful Euro moves provide different challenges for the junior team availability, the Socceroos will reap the rewards in a lot of cases and that's the most important thing. We just need to attack junior teams from a different angle because it's a re-occurring problem and also need coaches that can utilise the talent available with an Asian tournament able system.

Yeah well said, a new approach is needed going forward with the coaching ranks.

The thinking it needs to be ex Socceroos coaching these teams who understand the meaning of the shirt is outdated.
Asian football is not to be messed with which is why we just need the most talented coaches whom can make the most of the talent available and perform at their best as a team.
If the best coach is from overseas when I’m all for it we can’t mess around anymore.

Ive seen both parties being blamed on twitter. A league reddit mostly blaming the coach.

I want to nuance my blaming the coach. Its not his fault he got the job or that youth sides are wrongly used to develop coaches

That was the narrative for the senior team wasnt it? Seems reasonable for the senior team since we have 0 big 5 regulara (hopefully about to change). If he said that about the olyroos id disagree

The discourse seems again on social media that the players are the problem and not coach and overall preparation that goes with it should I be surprised though…

Not sure where FA will go from here with this, but if they were to appoint a new coach then it should be one that has Asian football experience, someone who can navigate the challenges of Asian football.

The players could be only good as the coaches who train them in under pressure tournaments.

Indonesia’s coach is South Korean, even the Qatar coach is from Portugal it doesn’t have to local if they don’t have the experience.

I don't have a lot of faith in the FA making difficult decisions if only because changing may cost and take effort. I hope so though because this result is a balls up.

Can I ask what difficult decisions FA have shirked that leads you to that conclusion?

Whatever mate. I’m guessing you’re either a teacher or law student that likes to nitpick other people’s tiny mistakes 👏

I’m neither a teacher nor a law student but I do get pissed off with misinformation on social media that is taken as fact without a care for the truth.

Agreed. And then we face South American, European, African opposition each with its own set of challenges.... How can the national team (all levels) solve 10-20 vastly different problems in breaking through a defence or preventing an attack during a qualification campaign and or tournament,  all while ONLY using one set of guidelines? Its madness... madness....

Are there more varieties in playing styles from the NPL? Do the teams with their strong identities and histories translate to different approaches on the pitch? If we get a NSD and P&R it's something I hope to see.

If the approach through the football pyramid (cough - if we ever get one) is homegenous that's good for continuity but shit for creating different environments where different players qualities/personalities will flourish. That's not a good thing imo. It'll limit who can succeed and there's enough barriers to that already.
