Having copped a speeding fine last week (clocked at 57 in a 50 zone on O'Riordan st) I agree with others in that the nanny state that is NSW needs to first figure out how to slug its citizens for maximum $$$ before it fully supports the uptake in EV transport.

Another example is Andrew Constance having no appetite to consider legalizing E-scooters.

The last thing these guys want is to lose $$$ from fuel excises or insurance levies....

...or loss in revenue from speeding cameras....

Electric vehicles will eventually take over all driving. Pretty sad about that as I enjoy good long drives. It's an aussie thing.
I won't have to teach my kids how to drive. They enter a destination into the cars computer and off it goes.
Eventually all cars will be the same. Only way to differentiate the higher earners is how comfortable your car seat is.

Hey Marki..... was the cop that pulled you over driving a 1988 Holden Stateman?

Did the Blue & Red lights in the car not give it away that those were the one’s Dman pinched from Coyote’s nightclub when they refused him entry for not being intoxicated enough.

Dman.... stop imitating being a highway patrol officer, we spoke about this back in Year 12

Range and faster charging will come, it just takes time.
For our generation driving will be a matter of choice until we are too old to drive.
First change will be drivers 85 and over will find it very hard to maintain a licence, you will need to be capable, no excuses.
For young kids the next change is deciding if they want to bother learning to drive.
The final change that even when you think you are driving the car supervises and gives your insurance company real time updates on your mistakes .... that is called progress.

Is the right to drive unsupervised regardless something we should have? Probably not if there is a safer alternative.

Still have schits with a lot of drivers developing bad habits...one in particular is staying anchored behind the line even until such time as the next right turn arrow comes even though the light is green. I saw a driving school instructor today teaching his charge correctly to advance into the intersection and wait for a break n the traffic or wait until the light changes and then turn right...when safe...which means don't go until all the pricks coming toward you have stopped going through the orange/ red light. I think this non advancement to the intersection is a result of too many parents teaching their kids to drive,They don't want Junior to advance into the intersection so as to protect their car. Moral...if you are teaching your kids to drive at least give them a few lessons with a proper driving school. PLEASE!

It drives me fucking crazy when people don’t move into the intersection. Especially when Dan Murphy’s is around the corner and Coopers is on special.

It's funny you mention that scenario.....
I failed my driving test when I advanced the intersection with intention to turn right midmorning on a schoolday, and after waiting for a break in traffic, I turned right only for a fekking schoolkid truanting from school, decides to cross the intersection on a red Dont Walk signal....

I was forced to stop in front of her with my car halfway sticking out the intersection and was ultimately failed on that alone after driving perfectly otherwise....

It has to be done sensibly. Some times too many push up and block the intersection when the lights change

Yes the driving instructor was unimpressed, verbal abuse and a blast of the horn is the minimum expected response to a Rorters jersey.

I see the V'RLol are flogging their new idea of less down time and more "air time" in their bid to either tire the players out or kill them with heart attacks. And I see Jake Averillo looks to be the ambassador of the " defy impossible"  campaign with that try of his in the corner. Go Jake. GO DOGS!

Tech question to the gurus out there (BN, Zef etc)

My NBN internet has been pretty poor over the last year. I have HFC connection on a 50Mbps plan.

What are your thoughts of pissing off the NBN and getting Optus 5G internet with 4G backup? The Optus guy was convinced it's better at his dads place and I just read an independent review saying at worst case its equal to NBN but at best case you can get about 300Mbps (even higher in some locations).

It's only $75 a month so its equal to any typical NBN50 plan.

You reckon it's the way to go?

I'm thinking of going on it as it has a minimum 50Mbps guarantee at peak times or you can get your money back.

Tried all that.
I was going to change provider (currently with Internode). Not happy with it. Can barely get through a zoom call.

Only problem is that both Telstra and Optus have said there are no HFC modems at the moment so I cant change with them.

Was wondering whether i bite the bullet and go with 5G without the NBN...

Didn’t you mention once before you had one wi-fi modem doing upstairs downstairs and out the back and half a dozen people using it at the same time?

It might be you need a router and more wi-fi’s modems, might be, might be not.

At the end of the day though if you’ve had someone in the know at your place I’d take their advice.

Course if it wasn’t for Abbott you’d have fibre to your premises and no problem’s whatsoever.

Then again I just re-read and noted that in the know guy was an Optus man spruiking Optus stuff, so of course consider he’s gonna say that isn’t he.

Consider getting an independent contractor have a look over the place would be my advice.

Marki, Firstly it would depend on your location because Optus 5g doesn't exactly have the most comprehensive coverage. One suburb might have it, the next doesn't, then the next does & so on. Then you have to find out what hardware you need, whether it's a simple dongle in a usb port or do you need a tech to put an antenna on your roof & run cables etc. It'd be ideal if it was as simple as a dongle & you could do something like a month or two trial to determine reliability & performance, whether there's interference causing disconnections etc & without a huge setup cost & a long term plan. Whilst doing that (if you can) keep your existing account to fall back on too.

Even for a 5g trial period it'll cost something to get the answers (hardware + setup fee), that's up to you there, but once you know either way it'll make things easier in the long term. You might even conclude within a week that it's so much better than what you had that you'll cancel nbn then & there (or it might all seem the same or worse). But what works well for someone a few suburbs away wont necessarily work well for you due to a number of factors. That's why I suggest a trial, but I'm not sure Optus operates like that, from memory they'll try to get all their customers locked in long term from the start. They're also notorious for locking all their hardware to Optus, so you can't buy or use anything from elsewhere. Having said that, if a long term plan is the only way, they'll likely have a cancellation fee as an option, so you'd have to add it all up & decide whether you really want to know what 5g is like where you are compared to nbn. Your own building might cause problems, there might be big apartment blocks nearby preventing good reception or anything else the lucky guy a couple of suburbs away doesn't have to worry about. I do think it's worth checking out for sure, but Zef is right, an Optus salesman telling you Optus is the best thing since sliced bread...be careful. Plenty of electricians get the extra credentials to do communications work like this, so if you can't sort it out yourself, at least you can get someone neutral & they'd likely have the advantage of working with setups from multiple providers.

Thanks.
It's a plug (AC power) and play modem that looks like a cylindrical vase, so no antennas.

The beauty of it is that you can take it upstairs, downstairs or in the shed if you like, as long as you can plug it into AC power. On that note, it sounds good as it can transmit right next to your receiving device. Might work better in some rooms more than others though.

Right now, it comes with a $200 setup fee waiver so it's essentially $0 upfront with 1 month free but it's a 2 year contract.

I'm leaning towards it, especially with its min 50Mbps satisfaction guarantee

I haven't used 5g myself. They don't have it available in this area. I've used the earlier Telstra 3g/4g equiv here before (as a backup when nbn is down for long periods).
That was just a usb dongle the size of a finger. It worked fine but the problem was it was slow, not because of the dongle, but because of the tower in the area it was receiving from being slow, much slower than the dongle was capable of. If the tower was faster I'd be using that instead of the wired nbn modem.
In your situation, it sounds like the antennas built into the 5g modem would be larger & more powerful & the tower it transmits to would surely be more up to date & faster, so at this point it sounds very promising. Zero setup fee is good, 2 year plan isn't, so it'd be a matter of checking out what the cancellation cost is in case you need to & maybe they'd just want the modem back if that's what you did. Overall, it probably wouldn't be too expensive just to give it a test, at worst a cancellation fee + cost of modem & chances are you'd want to keep it.
