As a slight diversion, the worst needle I ever got in living memory was either:

a) The measles shot (I think?) a few months before I started kindergarten. I remember sitting on my mothers' lap and crying like a bitch as the doctor shoved what felt like this huge knitting needle all the way through my arm and not being able to get free was the worst feeling. I recall sitting in the car later that night with the little circular bandaid on my arm and it still ached like a motherfucker.

b) Getting my blood taken for a medical test when I was 21, having not been allowed to eat for 12 hours. It felt like they were trying to syphon fuel out of a car that had an empty tank and it felt like they had the needle in there for over a minute. Felt like my entire life force was being sucked out!

By contrast The Jab (TM) was probably the easiest needle I have had to date- both times. In real time I was literally sitting there as the nurse repeated that script about possible side effects etc etc she'd probably spoken at least 5000 times over already, I look to my left and see the other nurse getting the needle ready, she puts it into my arm and it feels like somebody lightly pressing their pinky finger against my skin, I glance the other way then there is a dabbing sensation on my left arm and I look back and the needle is gone and the nurse is finishing dabbing with cotton wool and putting a bandaid on. It felt like it took as long as a modern F1 pit stop. I thought The Jab (TM) was just a nickname but that's literally how long it lasts.

The other unusual thing is that (normally) after injections, even after getting my ears pierced years ago, I feel so fatigued I have to go and lie down somewhere for a while. This time I did the standard go and sit in the waiting room for 15 minutes and felt fine. The only side effect was after the second lot, lying in bed that night my left arm felt fatigued and I was cold enough to put my hoodie and track pants on under the doona. But that was it.

The Chinese government has all but erased Tiananmen square from their collective memory which is pretty easy to do in an authoritarian state.

Which is why it's important that these photos and the story gets circulated as far and wide as possible. Especially to Chinese people abroad. (And there's far more photos here than what you see on wikipedia.)

What strikes me when you look at these photos is how similar they all are to the young people in the velvet (and other) revolutions in Europe in the late 80s. Such a shame.

Was listening to the 'Download This' podcast and they were saying this US company that operates in China had to close one quarter of it's stores because they questioned some aspects of their clothing lines and how they mat have been made by slave labour. China unleashed some bots on their arses and caused a huge backlash in China and the resultant store closures. BRUSSELS, Belgium — It is time for the European Union to “think about mandatory vaccination” against COVID-19, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday, while stressing member state governments would decide.

“My personal position is… I think it is understandable and appropriate to lead this discussion now,” she told a media conference, underlining that a third of the EU population of 450 million was still unvaccinated.

“How we can encourage and potentially think about mandatory vaccination within the European Union? This needs discussion. This needs a common approach. But it is a discussion that I think has to be led,” she said.

Several EU countries have already taken steps in that direction.

Austria has announced compulsory COVID-19 vaccinations from February 1 next year and Germany is mulling following suit.

Von der Leyen also said that the EU’s main COVID vaccine provider, BioNTech-Pfizer, would have shots available for children in the bloc in two weeks’ time.

She said she had spoken with the German-US joint venture about the issue the day before, and they said “they are able to accelerate — in other words children’s vaccines will be available as of December 13.”

She noted that “if you look at the numbers we have now, 77 percent of the adults in the European Union vaccinated, or if you take the whole population, it’s 66% — and this means one-third of the European population is not vaccinated, these are 150 million people.”

The EU’s vaccination drive is very uneven across the 27-nation bloc.

Portugal, Malta, Spain, Italy, Ireland, France and Belgium have all vaccinated more than three-quarters of their populations, while eastern member states Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Croatia all have inoculated less than half.

“We have the vaccines, the life-saving vaccines, but they are not being used adequately everywhere,” von der Leyen said.

While the European Commission pre-purchased COVID vaccines for use in the EU, von der Leyen emphasized that the individual countries had the responsibility on how their vaccination programs were done.

The EU chief’s comments echoed those made by Israel’s coronavirus czar Salman Zarka hours earlier.
