+x+x+x+x+x+xBig must win game coming up, chance to get into the Scottish league cup final. Cmon Ange He has reached his first Cup Final as a Celtic boss, so the first parts done, now he needs to win it 🙂 It will be interesting to see how he deals with and what he does with the crazy period that has just started ‐ Including the Saints match that was just played/finished it was the first of 14-16 matches that will be played until just into the New Year (roughly one game every 3-ish days). The busy and crazy schedule that always comes this time of year has arrived. Fascinated as to where you rank Ange against recent Celtic managers - Specifically at getting the team playing "good" football. So far. I mean. Some of the attacking highlights, even those that that don't turn to goals (i remember one involving a KYOGO backheel, during the build-up, that didn't lead to a goal- either the 1-0 st johnston game or the recent semi - and thinking "this is 'breath-taking football. As good as I've ever seen Celtic play" I'd obviously biased and like anges/the-more-progressive team to win, but watching play like that is worth the ticket price alone. Goal or not. I know rogers obviously keeps the ball on the deck and is a modern coach, arguably same level/slightly above ange cause he's actually won the trophies 'playing pretty'. But who else? any other former celtic managers with as an exciting first few months? - playing-style-wise i mean. Genuinely interested, i know you can get stick here for being one-eyed, but you seem to know the game and I see you as a mine of Celtic-knowledge to plunder. Even if you were fairly sceptical like a lot of the Scottish-based Celtic fans when he was announced. :) edit: oh and 2: What's the deal with the new Sevco manager? Do you know if he's bringing in his tem to replace the staff that did Gerrards tactical coacing (while stevie looked pretty on tv). God i hate rangers, mostly for what they represent & their solidarity with fashy/Right-Wing-supported-teams, I'm sorry for even brining them up lol. I've done the occasional little google but I'm sure you're more plugged in than I. IF you were asking about my beloved Central Coast then it would be the opposite story Where do I rank Ange alongside recent Celtic managers??.... It's a bit had to judge as he has only been at the club for a few months, but what he has done in those few months has been nothing short of magical. If I am to judge on style only, then he is right up there with Rodgers, and slightly ahead of Delia and Lennon. That said, style isn't everything as tactics play a huge part, especially in European competitions. So when it comes to tactics IMHO he still has a fair way to go when comparing to the three others I just mentioned. Tactically the top two (IMO) are Rodgers and Lennon followed by Delia than Ange. If you cannae win pretty, than win ugly. I will take an ugly win over a "pretty" loss every single time. As I have said previously Ange needs to be able to adapt to what is happening in front of him during the game – Especially when it comes to playing in Europe. I've said it before you can't play attacking football at 100kph every game. As a club, we have history with that mentality and we often finished with nothing to show for. I will admit the times have changed and the domestic competition isn't as tough as it once was, so domestically he will get away with his style moreso than those of years past. Back to tactics – If he can learn to change his style when needed (especially in Europe), where he may need to learn to let the other team to control possession, and hit those teams on the counter and get the upset win here and there, then he has the potential to go down as one of the greats who can leave a true legacy (will also depend on how long he stays at the club). But he still has a long way to go before he reaches that stage/level. As for the other lot, and their new manager I cannae say whether or not he will bring in his own backroom staff, I've heard that he may bring in a couple, but you would be better off asking one of their supporters (ie 'Sutherlandbear' or 'A Bunch of Huns Hacks') on these boards for clarification with regards to van Bronckhorst, and any backroom staff he may bring in. Any reason for just quoting my post?? Was answering Nearpost. Relax Timothy.

+xHave only seem the five minute highlights but gee, Celtic looked good (i guess the that’s why they call it highlights). Three good goals. The new boy Scales got good reviews for his cameo too. And Rogic’s goal showed both his strength and skill. An impressive 0-3 away victory and it seems Ange has the team now playing how he wants them, albeit with soft tissue injuries coming out of the last few matches. Clearly the fitness isn’t where it needs to be for this high tempo football, hence the need for greater squad depth and quality. While only four points off Rangers I have a feeling that the quality and depth of the squad might not be enough to hunt down Rangers this season but who knows - injuries and rehabilitation are going to play there part and I have no awareness as to how good Celtic’s back room staff, physios etc are - big club, so they should be top notch. Anyway, I actually am enjoying the Scottish Premiership and happily absorbing whatever Kayo dishes up. Watched the match on Kayo and seriously could have been 6 or 7 nil. Some of the misses, they were harder to miss than score. This team will click one day and put double figures past someone. Btw, you can watch the full replay on Kayo.

Celtic being 4 points behind instead of 1 is completely at the feet of the Celtic players finishing, not the coach (of whom I'm not his biggest fan, but I think he's worked a miracle here). His interview was interesting this week: he's now gently laying it at the players, and I think that comes now that he has demonstrated that the Celtic job is not above him.

+x+xApparently Ange looking at bringing in 3 more Japanese players in the Jan window. Out of the three Japanese players link to Celtic, Daizen Maeda (SS/CF/RW) almost seems like a certain. As for Reo Hatate (LB/CM/LW) and Yosuke Ideguchi (DM/CM/Box-to-Box). Out of those last two, Yosuke Ideguchi could possibly be a good pick-up, as we only really have the one 'Box-to-Box' player at the minute in McGregor. 'LB' has been a problem area for us all season, so Reo Hatate could also be a decent signing (I cannae comment to much as my knowledge on the Japanese scene isn't all that high), though Ange may want to continue playing Josip Juranovic (RB/RM/CB) as an Inverted 'LB' as he has done a few times this season. We also have the hope/possibility that the likes of James McCarthy (DM/CM) and Georgios Giakoumakis (CF) can get over their niggling injury issues and start being able to build up their match fitness and provide depth and value to the playing roster, along with Christopher Jullien's (CB) return from a very long layoff making his own return. If all three can make full comebacks it would/could almost feel/be like three new signings. We also have the possibility that a few of the young lads steping up and prove their worth. Guys like Dembéle (RW/LW) (once recovered from injury), Ewan Henderson (AM/CM), Adam Montgomery (LB/LW), Liam Scales (CB/LB/LM). As for players leaving/heading out the door, the likes of Vasilios Barkas (GK), Boli Bolingoli (LB/LWB/LW), and Albian Ajeti (CF) all look certain to be leaving. There also could be a couple of youth players going out on loan, the likes of Conor Hazard (GK) as an example. If Barkas, Bolingoli and Ajeti leave, we may need to find another player or two to help add depth, especially if Ajeti and Bolingoli leave. I guess like all previous seasons, it will all come down to how much money the board are willing to spend during the January transfer window, and how quick any transfers can be finalised. If they fully back Ange, and get the players who Ange along with the scouting team have identified, and get the transfers done early in the window for once, instead of waiting until the final day, who knows how good this team could be. I also want to see Celtic take up the buy-out clause for Jota, and sign him permanently as soon as possible. Should have been done already by now IMO. If all that comes to pass then Celtic will be in for a strong finish.

This thread now represents one of my favourites, up there with the two sacred threads of Aussies Abroad and the National team threads, because it covers: Ange and all his messy history and people’s likes/dislikes; Celtic v Rangers; the insanity and attraction of the most intense football/political/cultural rivalries; club v country; Australian cultural cringe in world football and Eurosnoberry. Great thread, with passionate if at times boorish supporters who love the game!

There seems to be a wee bit of a pattern forming at Celtic at the minute with quite a few players picking up soft‐tissue injuries. It seem both Kyogo & Ajeti could be out for a while with hamstring injuries. Things aren't looking that good on the injury front.

Yes, every game, so maybe Ange needs to reduce the intensity of training and/or the games. That would be a gamble though because they have found some winning momentum but at the rate players are being injured I am not sure there is an alternative. Maybe Celtic need to get the Yokohama F Marinos sports science, physio and training staff on board because I don’t remember YFM dropping like flies.

There are a few articles from about 10 years ago where the grounds at the training facility were investigated as a possible reason for a rising injury toll back then, not sure how it turned out.

Kyogo appears to be less serious than first feared. Even chance to be available for the cup final it appears. Hopefully on the bench but not required. Should have enough to do Hibs if they can finish some chances. Been so wasteful.

Noting there’s two Mid-week league games either side of the cup final, so six points up for grabs, what does this mean in relative importance? If it was a choice between winning the cup final or taking six league points, which would the majority of Celtic supporters want? I would guess six points although no doubt some of the hardcore nutters would say they must win all three matches, no matter who is injured.

I personally am not convinced that Celtic have the squad depth to stay in touch with Rangers this season but they are certainly making a good fist of it. Winning 1-2 away on a long (by Scottish standards) midweek road trip, with a makeshift front three and a bunch of fairly inexperienced youngsters in the starting XI and on the bench, scoring the winner deep into injury time after having gone down to ten men around the 80 minute mark, shows lots of grit and determination. Notwithstanding the long injury list and heavy schedule, the mood in the playing group would be quite high you’d imagine!

If I had to choose one over the other, than the 6 league points wins everytime over the League Cup. In an ideal world winning all 3 matches would be preferred, if not expected, but currently we find ourselves far from being ideal.
