farkin bitters still carrying on. Western United are going nowhere. I’m not really sure why the focus is on them anyway when MacArthur is doing far worse… and they have a stadium (well sorta).

Congratulations on your separation from reality

Your last quote is what's it all about. How can anyone be expected to pay money to watch players wasting time, faking injuries and cheating in the name of sport? Fans want to be entertained and not be frustrated on the terraces. Soccer/football has lost its soul and until there's a major overhaul it will continue to attract fewer spectators each season.

Why were they attending in there droves 5-10 years ago?

Indeed they are! Who were the other contenders that may have done better, I can't see any other potential bid doing any better? Maybe we have reached our limit with 10 top tier teams and need to look at a Div 2 with 10 teams?  I think its time to accept the norm of 5k average attendances, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The league was new, exciting, hence the 10k average, the league is now almost 20 years old, and we gotta accept it for what it is, there is nothing wrong with 5k crowds if the clubs are financial sustainable. Same as big bash, huge crowds early on, now they also struggling to get 10k. However it is disappointing to see the big city clubs like Brisbane and East Sydney struggle to even get 7k.

I can guarantee that 5 average attendance will be meant no new TV deal = no professional football.

Maybe all those "spectators" should stick to WWF until Soccer/Football makes some slight rule modifications to appeal to the new marketplace?

K League average 5k. NBL and Netball average less than 5k and have TV deals.

Or maybe even put extra goals next to the main goal. Coz, you know, players should at least get something for trying.

This is pretty much my point. There wouldn't be too bidders doing much better in the times we're in. the BBL crowd numbers hasn't started well either.

Why were they attending in there droves 5-10 years ago?

Because the A-league catered to its core market: nearly all male, and mostly young, and mostly wogs, the most visible aspect of which was active support.  The FFA then set out to "broaden the appeal" ie to kill that core demographic off.

K League average 5k. NBL and Netball average less than 5k and have TV deals.

The K League is interesting.  The clubs are either owned by the government, big corporations or the military.

The NBL achieved its best ever TV deal worth $45 MIillion over three years for 10 teams.  A similar deal will not sustain professional football.

Netballs TV deal with Foxtel is partially-funded-at least- by government grants.  That's not going to happen with the A-League.

The deal the A-League has now is based on what the buyer values its *potential* to become, not what it currently is.  Its the potential that hooks them in.

This is no different to the deals struck with Fox.  In the end, it failed to achieve that potential.

I'd imagine the broadcast funders have set KPI's for the A-League.  If they are not met this time, who else is going to be dumb enough to pay $millions again?

Honestly, I did not know there was a game on until it appeared on my Facebook wall last night. I thought we were supposed to see an improvement in promotion? There was a little bit in the leadup to the start of the season, but not a lot since.

Also, why is City v PG played on a Wednesday when the weekend if free? Is anyone able to explain this logic?

I think they're trying to get a bunch of glory away games out of the way early so they can return to Perth by Xmas, although not sure how last night helps with that.

Yeah I had no idea either.

Was so confused when I saw this morning they had played because I was sure I saw Perth lose an FFA Cup game to you guys so why were they playing again aha

And I'm what people would call a hardcore fan

A ticketek employee told me last nights crowd was 1600.

The clubs release the figure so can say what they like. It isn't coming from the venue.

A few years ago a staff member at Melbourne Storm told me that when they tally attendance they use the term attendance quite literally. So, they count every human that enters the venue. That means they include players, coaches, staff, security, cleaners, media personnel, admin people, bar staff, etc. Technically these people are in attendance therefore they are counted. I'm sure this is common practice across all sports.

In the UK it is basically tickets sold whether they turn up or not.

The AFL has ripped the Adelaide Oval management for reporting staff and players in figures inflating attendance. The NRL certainly used to do it, not sure now.

That said Im almost certain Giants and Suns matches are reporting tickets/reserved seats sold regardless of attendance.

Maybe we should get our own house in order before we worry about other sports. Talk about someone thinking they're throwing rocks on the next door neighbours roof, when in fact, they're throwing them on there own roof.
