Ryan Teague on the bench for Covilha in Portugal and bench also for Jordan Courtney-Perkins at Warta Poznan in Poland.

Plenty of time but Teague is two years older than Volpato and has only really started playing games. Credit to him getting the loan and playing but I wonder where he'd be after having 3 full A League seasons by now. The education in Portugal is sound though I think we're seeing better results with Atkinson, Devlin and Metcalfe getting games early.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Great, one instance there is a talented Aussie attacking player who’s the complete package, he’s on the verge of committing to Italy.

Quite simple. Call Volpato up for the match against Japan. Get on your knees and beg, Arnie. Offer him whatever he wants. Apologise for the fact that the development system in this country is shit. Remind him that, he’s an Aussie (for better or worse). His entire upbringing took place in Australia. His friends are Aussies, his schooling was in Australia. Most of his experiences were in Australia.

Make Volpato understand that he can be the one to lead change in his own country. That he can be a starter every game and with all but guaranteed pathway to World Cups (aside from the Qatar).

Watched the Roma game on Kayo and i have to say CV looks the real deal.
What is his position though ?
Im under the impression from reading here and Soccerway that hes an attacking mid/striker.
Watching the game i thought he played as a second striker behind Abraham.
Similar to how Delpiero or Totti would play between the lines playing as a striker and dropping deep or pulling wide to recieve the ball.
Would that be accurate ?
I could picture him playing off Juric the same way.
With Hrustic,Rogic,Mcgree and co in the mid and Juric leading the line players like CV or Boyle in that role can pull defences around.
We could be looking pretty good for 2026

Yeah it seems he's in the hole. He did linger out wide in some attacks. It seems he had a pretty free roam but held predominantly central.

He’s a 10. If he was in Australia at this age he’d have been shunted onto the wing.

Because a-league club's don't promoted talented No.10s or strikers for that matter and use an foreign spot or an experienced Aussie there instead, a-league clubs are still risk adverse when using Australian youth based on their skill set.

Of course how teams play in this league dictates the usage of players but a greater scope on foreign players in those crucial positions.

This idea that the development systems is shit is looking at naively, remember Volpato was part of the Sydney FC and WSW youth teams till he was 16 he was let go and this stuff happens because player development is linear and so could have stayed here at semi pro level at the NPL or try he's luck in Europe which he did.

The lack of professional clubs outside of the a-league is really hurting the pathways here, who knows how many more Volpato's Rogic's are out there if they are not in a professional set up.

Bernardo, Segecic and Lopane are the 3 best 10s in the country born in 2004. Bernardo has exclusively been played on the wing in the A-League, likewise Lopane, and Segecic has barely played and when he did play he played upfront. Van der Saag who is turning 23 and technically completely inferior to Segecic has been preferred as a bench option in attacking midfield to Segecic.

The question we need to ask is why this happening? I would like to hear the thoughts on these coaches as to why they don't play them in those positions.

I get there is physical issues as well as the teams structure with and without the ball to deal with and maybe the trust or their capacity to do this isnt there yet?
We badly need this NSD up and running ideally as an hybrid model with a-league youth teams and the best NPL teams competing together if not a full proper home and away NYL because doing nothing won't change a thing.

Anyway thats for another topic in a different thread for another day...

I think to get Volpato you’d have to sack Arnie. As if Volpato, playing in the serie A for a gun team and being tracked by Italy, would waste his time playing for the bumbling Socceroos and its inept hillbilly coach. But if you sack and replace him with a credible Euro coach with an emphasis on developing youth players, then just maybe we can nab him.

it’s not an either or. Both of the following things can be true:
* Player development isn’t (usually) linear
* The development system in this country is shit

Both are true, imo, in this case.

I agree with your second paragraph, though. Really costly not having a professional second division (to say nothing of P/R). Still even with it, we’d still be a long way behind the stronger European countries,

See this is where I disagree, recent transfers from a-league to Europe shows good is work is being done from benefiting in playing at home.

There is plenty of good talent out there, anything to improve the level here can only be a good thing.

That's tough on Teague he is loaned out atm and started 15 games this season and 3 in the cup and he's playing a position where strength and size is a key trait. But yes his next year or two is crucial.

Stensness could play the role of ball winner infront of the defence similar to Jedinak but with better passing.
Metcalfe did well at the Olympics as the deepest midfielder so maybe he has somthing to offer.
Jeggo and Dougall are probably at their ceiling now so arnt really the future.
