Best players - Souttar, Behich and Mooy - Souttar made a lot of interceptions, Behich kept his defensive side well (even Dembele was relatively quiet). Mooy kept the ball at his feet more than anyone else, and seemed to be the go to player. Yes, that is his position, but he had the trust of those around him.

Big improver - Karacic - I thought his cameo in the Argie game he showed a lot of character and played his position well.

Special mention - for a bloke who's scored 13 goals in 75 prior games, Leckie did a brilliant job in taking the goal against Denmark.

Coach - I can't believe Arnie in the last 6 games is the same bloke who coached the early rounds of qualifying. Such and improvement in management. Deserves a further contract. Cannot believe I said that.

Disappointment - Hrustic - the next big thing is still to arrive.

I have watched overseas coverage of the game, and also got heaps of messages from mates around the world. All say the same thing, we made them look desperate at the end and we played damn good.

Ive just read 6-7 pages post match of football specific techno babble statistical garbage.....  no comment.
So proud of the lads, they did their best and despite our limitations earned the respect of the majority of the football world.
Yes Goodwins goal was a 90 degree deflection, yes Mooy looked absolutely cooked, yes Messi is un-playable at times but also we scared the fucken shit out of them in the last 10 mins......
Hrustic was right to be furious, Ryan had a great 3.5 games and the poor bloke shouldnt blame himself for a one off howler, it happens.
Kuol's take down of the ball, turn away from his man and shot at the very end is THE MOMENT of the WC for me..... Nothing any of the Roos did before that was as "jogo bonito"... People bagging him out for missing should re-evaluate their lives.
Well done Graham Arnold. Well done JJ and FA for having faith in GA. Well done to the 26 HEROES who represented ALL OF US, with pride and determination.....

The football boffins in Australia  thought  that from following the UEFA world  powerhouses, that 4-3-3 and its variations was the best formation to create technical players.

The  tenet that it is predicated on,  is that there are triangles    and diamonds inherent  in the variations of this formation. France, Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Germany 4-2-3-1, use it as the development formation for youth.

Finally, another premise is that if one learns to play the 4-3-3 variations, which is difficult with  the inherent triangles,   it is easier to play formations that are not 4-3-3.

I have a sneaking suspicion that most players know what a triangle is, and that the best players in the world don’t find it too difficult to play in different formations.
You can just imagine a young Aussie Messi being dropped from the Under 12 development squad because he strayed out of position too often, or insisted on dribbling past his opponent rather than passing back to a teammate in the triangle.

Besides the hung drawn and quartered line which was clearly a joke as the end of the sentence was "or at least have his passport revoked" indicating I wasn't being serious I don't think I said anything to regret.

I genuinely do think he should move on and never play for us again and in that moment (and a little bit still now) I hated him.

I have calmed down obviously and feel really sad for ryan on a personal level. On a human level because I am not a monster. I teared up watching him interviewed.

Nobody should have to live with that on their shoulders and I could never deal with that pressure.

Lucas Neill couldn't live with it and I dare say Matt Ryan will be the same.

100% this,

Really? Countries like Uruguay are wedged in between football powerhouses (Brazil and Argentina) where nothing else matters. They're constantly exposed to quality opposition at a short distance. Not saying there's not a lot more we can do, but that's no comparison.

Great post.  Agree with all of it

:) Leaving AAMI yesterday morning was the first time in YEARS I felt like an Australian football supporter...... Had a lovely chat with a couple of Melbourne Victory lads, shared a dart with a mum and daughter who where watching their first ever soccer game (isnt it just sooo exciting, the flares and the passion?) and had a young Argentinian dude and his girlfriend comment on my half'n'half Greece Australia scarf that they felt exactly the same way......
If nothing else, I now have a smidgen of hope for the game moving forward.......

Well you're not the only one to follow his career. His form didn't decline to the extent you're letting on and Aussie players have played for the NT while in club limbo before.

Until I know otherwise I'm assuming Arnold didn't pick him.

Who he thinks he is....Messi, Zidane?!!  Ive been saying the past 2 years Hrustic never good for the national team. At least Rogic showed some creativity and skills.  If that's his issues with ego and temper he shouldn't be near the national team. The biggest mistake Arnie made in this world cup is playing Hrustic . Should have been someone else as Hrustic contributed nothing and zero impact in these 4 games.

I reckon Langerak gets a finger tip to the Messi goal and kicks the second one into row Z.

So, who's up coming and push into this squad  ?.

Metcalf for sure.  Genreau maybe. Neuwanhoff. A new GK.  The left back that left Sydney FC as a the next big thing and is now in a Tier two league in Europe whose name I forgot. Volpato.

That's a bit worrying - I personally think that's incredibly poor, although it could be said that everyone handles getting knocked out of the world cup in their own way. I'm happy to give him benefit of the doubt that he made up afterwards, but his poor performances haven't been lost on me over the last year or so.

I understand many people's want for a specialist #10 for Roos, but imo I think we're equally or better served by simply playing a DM and two #8s since we have lots of creativity on the wings from Tilio, Kuol, Boyle, Goodwin. Rogic and Hrustic are the only players who stand out to me as specialist #10s that have Roos experience, McGree has played there but he's proven to be more effective a bit deeper for both Boro and the Roos.

If we gave a dedicated 10 that's comes through, great, but I don't think we have to pigeon hole players into a position they don't fit if there's a more functional system

Do teams play with a central number 10 these days?  The last one might have been Ozil.

This is also wrong. Football is more popular than all of those sports at youth level. Union is largely only played by private school lads, local comps are almost non-existent and largely confined to the old boys network and the leafier suburbs of Sydney.

The population argument doesn't hold water. Even if you said we have 4 major codes if you split the population by 4 you'd have 6 million people to draw on. Well Croatia, Costa Rica, Wales and Uruguay and other countries, like Iceland, have populations less than that and pump out players way better than us.

I've just paused and rewound the post match footage numerous times. As soon as the whistle went, Hrustic went nuts at someone on the bench and walked past Arnold. Arnold was a bit preoccupied anyway. Post game on the field he wasn't to be seen. I counted 25 players.

I get his injuries have been frustrating but this boilover and berating team mates needs to be clairifed very quickly. Kuol couldn't see him, Karacic was right to call for the pass.

We lack their football culture.  Go ask the Croatian and the Uruguanians supporters to critically evaluate our players.  I doubt they would want anyone of ours in their squad.  Most of our squad would be culled away from their national teams at the youth levels before they got anywhere near their national team.   Yes we jag results here and there, and they slip up, but our type of players are not the way they would do it.

Yeah like we say Messi's NT appearances have affected his club performances? not sure I get you there but sounds like typical excuse making.
We could write a book on all the excuse making in the Socceroos, why this and that.

I've followed his career on and off at Celtic.  His form repeatedly declined on return from Socceroo duties and often cost him his place in the starting team.

So what?

He's recovering from injury.  Otherwise he's be a lock to start each game.

Hrustic has failed to match his Socceroo teammates on the biggest stage of football - the World Cup.

If he can't transfer his form to the biggest stage, it  does not matter where he plays his club football. His game sense is decidedly inferior to that of most of his Socceroo teammates, despite being a good technician.

The highest standard of football is played in the Champions League.  The tier below it is the Europa League.-Hrustic scored in the penalty shoot out in the Final of that competition that his club won last year.

Ask players from  Italy, Belgium, Germany and Denmark? If you can't perform in the World Cup, why is playing at a big club in  a reputed big league  so good?

Ideally performing well in both would be the aim of most players.

What is  the big  deal about playing in Serie A? The national Italian team  hasn't been good enough to qualify for the last 2 World Cups.

Serie A is better standard than the Scottish Premier League: 5 of our starting 11 play in the SPL.  Add Atkinson and Boyle and that would make it 7 out of 11. I'd rather they were good enough to make it i Serie A, like Volpato.

Saw the Maclaren one watching the replay. A world class striker would've dislocated their ankle to get laces on it and score. Maclaren definitely took it wrongly. He was afforded a bit of space too. Wish he'd tried it first time. You never know.

89th minute for anyone interested. Took it behind him but in plenty of space and took a Leckie touch. FIFA World Cup 2022 | SBS On Demand
