We end the tournament as the only team to score against uzbekistan

Next tournament should be the first tournament where there are two leagues to give players game time

And another tournament where we got beaten by the champion team like our Socceroos experienced against Argentina last year.

Once again, yet another failure.
Losing to the Uzbeks was somewhat inevitable. Losing to Vietnam was unforgivable.
We still haven't come very far. We still have players who lack the skill to beat quality opponents. We're still disorganised in defence.

Yeah the u20s arent far away despite a lack of game time. They could also play irakunda and kuol. The nsd should push them over the edge

Swap in those two for Popovic and you get a different result (not just because we would have 12 on the park aha)

⏰ AET: 🇺🇿 Uzbekistan 0️⃣-0️⃣ Korea Republic 🇰🇷 (3️⃣-1️⃣ on pens)

The dreamy run continues as the hosts are through to the final. They will face Iraq on March 18!

#AFCU20 | #UZBvKOR

So Uzbekistan beat South Korea on penalties as well? Show how tough they are at home when they play in front of those fans.
Also Iraq beat Japan as well, no wonder its getting harder to qualify for these youth world cups when the competition in Asia is getting more difficult.

We have continue to invest in these youth team programs because its alot harder from what it was a decade ago.

However we get a promising generation coming through.

We werent organised against the Uzbeks. They could've easily scored 3-4 goals. The amount of cheap turnovers and misdirected passes was at times comical. There was a period of about 10-15 minutes in the second half our pass completion must have dropped to 50%, passes were spraying all over over the shop. Our central midfielders were garbage, though Lopane and Segicic did alright as attacking midfielders. The subs who came on did alright, and we regained some control and composure when they came on. I'm not sure who the right wing sub was who came on, Rodrigues or something? But whoever came on, how refreshing it was to see someone with the balls to dribble at defenders.

I would have said  the exact same thing absolutely, the game had zero control. There were times watching the Iran, Qatar games where I thought the same thing. Helter Skelter football and no one could do anything about it, no one put their foot on the ball, and we couldn't control the game properly, and play on our terms.  It just comes down to the environment, lack of preparation, team work and game-time which i cited in my initial post.

Whilst we can say they are still developing and make excuses for not qualifying for these major tournaments its another set back for these players to expose themselves on the world stage, i know they are good players individually. My annoyance comes from a good place, but seriously we need to begin to make things easier for ourselves to improve.

Those are fair points, the problem is we see that in the aleague as well which is why as entertaining as it is it’s quite an transitional league and lack of control makes it hard for it to slow down at times which is why teams struggle to adapt in Asia including clubs teams in the ACL when the game at times is more slower.

I said in a previous post after the Vietnam game that maybe the coaching curriculum needs an overhaul too but what happens at club land usually reflects on the type of players and teams that represent on an international stage.

To be fair this under 20 team went very close to qualifying as well, maybe preparation and more games especially senior football? Unless there are more Adelaide United’s and CCM’s out there willing to give talented under 20 players a go of course which is sadly isn’t the norm.

Would you say the same thing if Australia went through like that instead of Uzbekistan? For me all the details mean nothing if you get through a penalty shoot.

Both teams had chances but made mistakes as well but this is part of football especially at that level when they are still developing.

Anyway its a very harsh way to lose a football game like that especially with a World Cup spot on the line and would have deserved to qualify as well if Australia had some luck with the penalty kicks.

Is u20 consistently our weakest age group?

u17 are benefitting from the ntc, u23 seems to be benefitting from the a league. Both cohorts are behind where we want them but they are qualifying for the wc and competing

at u20 we havent qualified since we paid a fortune for a professional youth coach

Very few players in this cohort get regular a league time and are too good for the npl and struggling to get into the a league. Im hoping the nsd helps this age cohort as soon as the next asian cup

I wonder what the reaction would have been if we didn’t beat Peru via the penalty shootout?

I think its a pretty balanced reaction. At the end of the we only have ourselves to blame.

What a devastating ending for the young lads, to lose like that via on penalties is heartbreaking.

We can talk what could have been done better, but that could easily be said about both teams after all this is under 20 level and they still developing at this level but overall they showed a lot of promise and will nicely add extra depth which should be a very talented under 23 Olympic team.

It’s also a shame we would not see a full strength team play as well given the talent that’s overseas and here in Australia as well.

Plenty of talent which is very exciting for the future but to lose in that manner via a single kick is very difficult to take there was also a stone wall penalty which Segecic should have got as well which I can’t get over why it wasn’t given otherwise why the referee didn’t give Segecic a yellow card? Baffling, clearly home town call decision.

Either way I still can’t get over that we finished second in the group via a stupid H2H rule…this is so cruel and one of hardest results to take in other national team football in many years in that manner.

I had lots of thoughts whilst half asleep watching this shambles of a match.

Obviously always a difficult match against Uzbekistan at this level, add to that the home ground advantage and huge support. Would've been difficult for any senior National team let alone a group of 18-20 year olds.

In saying that, what a shambolic performance that was by our boys, not once did we look threatening as a system going forward, crossing was horrible, and I think Popovic didn't help with that, by not really being in good enough attacking positions. Obviously I think a lot of blame should be on Morgan for his selections and subs, because it was glaringly obvious that the game was being lost in midfield, yet Donnell visibly fatigued played the full game. It was screaming out for Yull to come on and control the game. I counted 4 passes in succession where Donnell passed it straight to Uzbekistan or resulted in a direct turn-over late into the second half.

This game required some leadership, someone to hold the ball, and get in the faces of the opposition.

Other individuals were not quite at it, I thought Segecic was actually off the pace considering his recent performances, and Bernardo was invisible, Forde was out of position a little, and Badolato was too careless in and out of possession.

This is not to take away that this tournament was actually a mini success considering our woeful performances for the last decade at this tournament, and the fact most of these guys haven't played football for the last 6 months and still got that close... just a huge disappointment that the WC was in our grasp and we let it slip due to some odd tactics and substitutions.

the Uzkbeks acted like they won the tournament... it shows how good we are... if u have watched these last few u20s tournaments... this team has been by far the most promising... but we seem to always get fkd by Asian refs. These smaller nations are starting lift when they play us.

But fuck me how many horrible ref calls have cost us underage world cups? Need to at least make a formal complaint this time. The u20 WC is biggest shop window behind the Olympics and WC.

Chuck Kuol and Irankunda in there and we score more goals.

Hmmm. Australian shot parried. Follow through sees keepers hand hit his boot and he goes down
Goal kick given. I don't know. We tried to milk it in think but certainly risky by keeper to reach at it.

Probably a penalty there if Var was available 😞

One way is to change the visa rules. No team can 3 forwards as visa players
The following could be used
Visa 1 foward
Visa 2 Midfielder
Visa 3 Defender
Visa 4 can be FW, MF or DF
Visa 5 can be FW if visa 4 is FW etc

And one player on the field must be u23 at all times.

So disappointed. I just feel this bunch drove forward a lot more than past teams. Yes, there was a lack of end product and we need to fix it.

These payers also need more and more club minutes.
