+x+x+x+x+x+x+xUnfortunately, racism was rife in the 50s, 60s & 70s, I had terrible experience in the northern part of Sydney as a kid, thankfully things has changed a bit since then. The difference with me was that I didn't feel sorry for those ethic clubs, as I also saw first hand their insecure views of these ethic clubs as the wrong type of wogs (like myself of Portuguese background) & lots of Anglos were not picked in the Greek, Italians or Croatian teams despite being in all the representative school sides. So it went both ways. So while I don't disagree with all those who experience racism in schools & see their fathers experience the workplaces, this was rampant during this times, the ethic clubs were doing likewise, hence why I never followed an NSL club even though I followed the players in the 70s, 80s & 90s. Yeah I've mentioned this before. Got cut from a side because I was the wrong type of ethnic kid at a Sydney club. Very common in those days. Thats terrible if you faced such prejudice Robbo, seriously mate that shit isn't on... I AM surprised though because, as Flytox stated above the "effnik" clubs in NSW had a majority of anglo, welsh, sottish players rather than migrant kids..Wonder why the effniok clubs let THEM play...??? Maybe it was a NSW thing only??? Down here, at junior level it was, sadly, more about dickhead committee members or sponsors pushing for their sons/nephews to play for a club or they'll stop paying sponsorship every year.... Nationality didn't have much of a say in it mostly...... maybe I never saw it because I had the right sort of surname but I didn't only play for "Greek" clubs in my youth and never came across what you say...... It was in the 80s though so maybe things had changed a little by then? From my memories of the NSL I can't remember ANY club have an exclusive ethnic group of players ONLY.... In fact my favourite Hellas players (apart from Boutsi) were ALL non Greeks. Steve Bair, Dougie Brown, Trimmers, Davo, Crino. Covegny, Durakovic ...etc etc.. Was there many great Greek players in the NSL? It seems the whos who of the Socceroos are mainly of Croat, Italian, British or just plain old Aussies. Raskopoulos, Patikas... but, yeah, not that many. Don't forget Tsekenis,Katholos,Yankos and Boutsianis Lazaridis!!

I'm really sorry to hear that a number of posters on here suffered racial prejudice in Aus when they were growing up.

Quite a few played in Greece instead of the NSL for they got good gigs like unknown to many GK Kiri, played 6 CL games for Olympiakos, he's a god over there. Came to know him whilst my son played for GRM, top bloke, Patikas would frequent the Club as well. https://www.myfootball.com.au/news/tohouroglou-giving-back-gameMSC I don't know going way back before my times re Flytox quoting many anglos etc in Div1 but once I got into the fray there was alot of wogs originally but many anglos came into the mix, you only have to look back to some pre Arnold/Slater etc days ala Warren and others they sure did get into 1st squads. I think it was harder getting into Jnrs more than Snrs for if you had the "game" you'd slot in. As had been mentioned at Jnr levels it not what you know who you know as you mentioned, cash money for Spiro or Luca get in instead of Johnny who was a better player let alone another ethnic out. I'm sorry all this talk is off topic yet interesting per say But I do wonder what could have been for eg, had there not been so much racism, a better managed State Fed, unity, where we'd be today talking about "crowds" - for NSL did have some good crowds at times be it here or Melb and the countless sister Clubs in other States. IF they did have the direction and better leadership finally turning Pro combined what came in later we'd be in a better space instead of this constant snakes and ladders we keep going through. Its like you said mate, Dont forget Kiri's mate Chris Kalantzis ... was a superstar in Athens before those sons of whores in Pireaus paid him overs to leave..... Only played 1-2 times for the Socceroos, just enough to prevent him from playing in the Greek National team... I was in Greece at the time he was playing for PAO and the media where screaming about not being able to cap him for Greece, in the same breath he didnt get many Socceroos games probably BECAUSE he was in Greece. Was a pretty decent player.

Like I said LFC, not many Greek players in the whos who of Socceroos, Yankos, Lazza. I know Katholos, Boutsianis & Patikas had strong footballing careers, but never were great Socceroos. I met Jim at a few World cups.

Interesting reading the comments from the immigrant children who grew up here last mid century. As someone who grew up in the 90s it always seemed the wogs, ie croats, greeks, italitans etc were so well integrated and accepted and contributed to this notion of Australia being the most successful multicultural nation. One can understand why people like mono, having experienced racism himself growing up, would in turn become racist and want to keep soccer for themselves rather than falling into the pasty hands of mainstream society. Thankfully most of those anachronistic attitudes have died out and football is the one sport you can go to and feel accepted, regardless of your ethnic background. That's why the NSL failed, the great push to assimilate the sport into the national consciousness had been gaining momentum since the 90s but was stifled by people like mono and their fathers whose decision making and attitudes were influenced by the chip on their shoulder derived from their experiences growing up.

+x+x+xThings were going to change, they had already started changing. Even by the time the NSL started the old Dutch clubs were no longer powerhouses, and barely had any players with Dutch heritage. Once in the NSL, with Brunswick Juventus, you'd be lucky to find one Italian name in the starting XI. I can recall when Inter Monaro entered the NSL they had one local Italian in the team. The Greeks, Cros, Serbs and Macedonians were holding out a little longer, but change would have come eventually (they're all hard headed and stubborn!) I recall Inter Monaro had two top strikers of Italian heritage- Valeri and Giampaoli. Carl's dad Walter, I presume Walter played for APIA. I can't recall him playing at Inter Monaro (but I might be wrong). I would have described him as more a midfielder than a striker.

Its sad you have a agenda each time over some discussions you don't understand but have your own pov that is actually wrong. Chips on shoulders and all is not the right decription but one that people like you label others from the past, no not all are like that, as for MSC who you like to target, all I see is he taking the piss on you tbh and you bite easy as and turn it around with a chip on the shoulder response like your politcs. Your the type of anglo that represents the past the way you behave.

It can't be easy for Rusty to read others talking about who they are and their father's experience in this country when he probably isn't sure about either of those things for him(her)self.....

Its not unusual that the ethnics on here would gang up on the anglo, thats the usual sort of kinship that derives from wallowing in constant self pity and victimhood. Yeah i geddit, someone called you mean names when you were growing up, waaaaa waaaaah, hopefully one day you will recover from your lifetime of oppression. Id be ok with mono taking the piss out of me IF that’s what he was doing, but he cruelly mocked our anzacs and disparaged our british heritage time and time again. He was said overtly racist things and nobody has held him to account, rather he is condoned and even celebrated. He is a racist and a c*nt, and people like you like to cover and make his excuses his behaviour not because of principle but because of ethnicity. That makes you also a racist. By the way, digging holes in the ground and pouring some concrete doesnt mean you “built this country”, a racist claim that some including mono like to make. Australia was built by many Australians and no one person, group, generation can claim credit.

Hahahaha. 'Cruelly mocked'. Not even close. Who's celebrating mono? For a right wing, free speech, culture warrior you sure do have a glass jaw.

+x+x+x+xInteresting reading the comments from the immigrant children who grew up here last mid century. That's why the NSL failed, the great push to assimilate the sport into the national consciousness had been gaining momentum since the 90s but was stifled by people like mono and their fathers whose decision making and attitudes were influenced by the chip on their shoulder derived from their experiences growing up. there you go, shows how little you know pre 90's.....your a bub who lives the dream thanks to the good hard working gens of before incl the countless migrants who contributed. Its not unusual that the ethnics on here would gang up on the anglo, thats the usual sort of kinship that derives from wallowing in constant self pity and victimhood. Righto Cletus Clearly, not only are you a Mono apologist but a racist too. I'm not even mad tho. It's like, this is exactly the undertone of what comes through his posts all the time. Now he's saying what he thinks directly rather than through what he pretends to be an opinion "about football". And he thinks we are actually that dumb that we believe him saying it's an opinion about football... This makes me even more excited about the nst. We're getting the band back together and we all need to get along because just fuck off if you don't - we're hitting our 40s and tired of this shit. I love it, not just to see some proud old clubs back, but also its potential to rekindle my interest in the AL itself.

+x+x+x+x5 match reports have been put up on the board in the last 2 hours - all with zero responses. Maybe 12 or so years ago, when 442 was still thing and we had a thriving discussion board, those 5 articles may have had 100 comments inside two hours, with 50 different posters getting involved. I mention that because the crowds, the ratings, the media interest, the paucity of posters on this board, the disappearance of the coverage that used occur across a range of media and platforms - it's all part of the same malaise - it's all related - none of it is happening in a vacuum. What are the chances of a recovery? To season 3 levels of crowds and media interest? From where we currently sit - absolutely zero chance. 12 years ago fans of every other club would be eagerly posting our delight at the demise of MV. Now, no one even cares. This forum has definitely reflected the ongoing decline in interest in the league. My EPL team is in a relegation battle and I’m checking the score as soon as I wake. With Brisbane … meh - I know we aren’t going to win nor be relegated so no pressure at all. You see posts by some arguing the current model is viable and nothing would change if the unbelievable happenned opening up (how does one know) The fish where the fish are there - most watch/have interest in other leagues having P/R, their young kids watch and learn about it might I add looking ahead. No matter how good the football can/will be top of the ladder there is Nothing worth playing for x 6 clubs or keeping supporters interest, thats right its same again next season in the hope your Club has recruited for the better next season and that hit and miss, look at MV with all the resource they have the last few seasons. The first club eliminated fro finals was the Bulls on Friday night. The second was Victory last night. Interest was kept for all clubs for 24 of 26 rounds. Compare that to the excitement of the season if you had this under you: (mockup of NST by me) Beats the absolute shit out of " yeah but technically they had a mathematical chance of making the foinals 3 rounds before the end if every other club did something to earn you 17,6 billion in a 27 leg multi"

This was incorrect. All clubs were playing for a finals spot until the third last week. That relegation provides greater interest in the bottom end of the competition is not disputed bt that point can be made without mis-stating the true situation now. I would like to see P/R between the A-League and the NST once the NST has settled down. I don't believe that will happen for a few years. In say 3 years I think that there will be some clubs that will have demonstrated that they are capable of operating in the A-League bt I also think that there will be clubs that have failed financially trying to operate at the NST level. Id like to see the NST start with say 14 clubs so some clubs can fail and still see a decent sized competition continue until the test period is over. That way clubs seeking promotion to the NST will have a better understanding of the real cost of operating in the NST.

I think the best approach re P/r wouldn't be "when it's ready" but rather setting the date and if clubs aren't ready then that's what relegation is for. I think 5 years gives everyone enough time to prepare. The important thing is getting the divisions functioning and have something concrete in the timeline for clubs to have that incentive to aspire. I'm also good with the initial movement between tiers being decided by a playoff final, not automatic.
