+x+x+x+xVery disappointing, a lack of composure and execution in attack and defence at critical times. Fox probably played himself out of SOO. I hope that the team learns from this game. I hope Ciraldo learns from this game. CC has a better team than Barrett had but just doing a little better , Just no creativity in this team . All game Burton was chip kicking hoping something would come out of it . Just didn’t seem any other alternative plays . We did lead the linebreaks 7-6, with only 47% posession. The difference was we got kick happy when we made a line-break, support runners were too late getting there, and Parra scrambled way better than we did. 7 lineline-breaks for 2 trys, no tries off kicks and no repeat sets that I can remember, says a lot. We lacked composure, wasted opportunities and didn't build pressure. Parra ran better lines in attack, passed a bit better and supported better, our defenders made bad decisions and no one bailed them out. Parra didn't get kick happy when they made a line-break. It is all attention to detail, support play and knowing when to take the tackle and when to kick. Defense was similar, attention to detail, working together and getting bodies in the frame, were all lacking. I would not say lack of effort, just switching off at the wrong time, or too slow to react. Way to kick happy. We score four try’s in that first half if the players back themselves instead of kicking. We would have gone in at halftime in front of it wasn’t for brain snaps after making breaks. Who told the players to kick whenever they were in space. It’s the worst option almost every time.
Our defence suffered because we didn’t finish off our chances giving Parra more ball in better field position. Our forwards struggled because of this. But the boys should still show some effort in defence. They were terrible.

Only two kicks were the right play, the JAC kick which Averillo could not pick up, and the Burton kick which Fox nearly scored off at the end. Perham and Marhoney put in terrible low percentage kicks after getting into space. Defense wise TPJ always defends like that, but he does need to save some energy and hunt the big boys rather than chasing the halfback. I am not sure what happened, maybe we used up too much juice in attack. That is the worst I remember us defending this season, poor decisions backed up by poor contact. This is one of those games where the coaches need to study the tape and work out which players let the team down in defense. 1-2 changes to stiffen up the defence. Start Rajab in the halves. We need Karl running the ball more. Marhoney's form hasn't been great since the first time we played Parra, he is probably trying too hard.

Parra ended up scoring after it to take the game to 24-6 and give us a mountain to climb. I felt he had ample chance to get a pass to either Burton (I think) or Averillo and he put in a pretty average kick that missed Burton and had Averillo try to pick it up behind him. It was both poor choice and poor execution on what would have been a size pointer and scores at 18-12. Huge momentum swing soon after when Simmonson scored.

We need Karl running the ball more. Marhoney's form hasn't been great since the first time we played Parra, he is probably trying too hard. What killed us were the type of line breaks made by Parra and the players that made them. Mitchell, is a very fast half and when he makes a break it's difficult for cover defence to mow him down. Simmonson is a noted speedstar. On both the Gutho 3rd try and Simmo try, there was not much Perham (or any FB) can do to stop those. Mahoney had a last ditch effort to stop Guthos support run in his 3rd try but it was in vain. Parras 2nd, 3rd and 4th tries were all a breach of the frontline defence. TPJ poor on both Moses plays while KO and JOK poor on the Simmo one. If we had at least managed to slow down these guys that made the breaks, it may have allowed for some cover defence. Alot of this has to do with proximity to tryline, positioning of FB, person making the break and the support play. When JAC made the break, it was down the sideline so was easy for Gutho to cover him and force the mistake. Just not our day in the end and probably cost us 2 or 3 tries extra. But defence is where we lost it.

It will be interesting to see what side is named this week. After the Sharks we have another bye and we might get more injured players back. But with games against the Broncos and Panthers to come, we are a long way from being a chance to win those games. We need to identify where we need to sign players and find the best 17 out of the players we have. I want to see 80 minutes of well organised, composed, energetic attack and defence before the end of the season. The team has a very bad habit of producing poor periods of play on the back of bad decisions.

Actually I just watched highlights again... On the 2 rushes from TPJ which created space on the inside, both Sutton and Max King simply did not have the pace, energy or anticipation to match it with Gutho or Moses.
Mahoney actually had a better shot at stopping Gutho on the 3rd try but got wrong footed at speed.
On the Simmo try, Averillo tries in vain to knock the pass down from Asi to Simmo but fails to get a touch.
Basically Parra managed to execute their draw and pass options better than us while we stuffed ours up.
We were however lucky Sivo wasn't given his 2nd try. Another blunder by the video ref.

What CC is mad about is that our middle fowards are supposed to be always moving and closing up gaps. The fullback, hooker and halves should also anticipate what should happen, sometimes it is too late to move after the pass has been thrown. As much as I hate to admit it, Parra were also better than us in that area. There is a defensive system we are supposed to be using and the coach will know which players didn't do their job and which players were not working together. Back that style of play in attack up with better support play, better draw and pass, better end of set kicks, and better defence and we are where we want to be. If the opposition are still too good then we have to cop that. When the coach thinks players are not playing to instructions, or not capable of doing the job, we have a winning reserve grade side those guys can join. I am expecting some changes this week, or some players read the riot act and showing more effort in defence next game.

Well I expected some changes, perhaps we will still get them.
CC was annoyed after the game.

+xWell I expected some changes, perhaps we will still get them. CC was annoyed after the game. A top team implements defensive structures whereby any single breach of the defence does not directly lead to tries or points. To do that, you must have either layers of defensive lines, a top fullback or players with anticipation or instincts. I don't think we have any of the above. Our hope is therefore to not have our defensive line breached or we must scramble well. We are certainly a faster team nowdays than we have been in the last 4 or 5 years.

When attacking on JAC's side the inside men are to a man angling towards the sideline to a lesser or greater extent. This takes away space for JAC. We need someone inside to straighten a little to give him a little more room to operate.

Minimal change in team selection. To be honest not a lot of talent to choose from. Pele, big body takes the ball up hard, but very limited minutes and offers nothing in defence, especially laterally. Who else?

+xMinimal change in team selection. To be honest not a lot of talent to choose from. Pele, big body takes the ball up hard, but very limited minutes and offers nothing in defence, especially laterally. Who else? From the reserve grade highlights Flanno, Burns, KK and Topine good. From fans Pele and Wilson also good. Most of the candidates are on the extended bench named in the NRL squad. Wilson not in the extended squad, they probably want him playing another week at fullback in reserve grade. On past form if we want a guy to add energy in defence- Topine. The frustrating thing this season is that we are not far off, we don't drop a lot of ball, throw bad passes or lack speed and footwork. At times our kicking game, linespeed and defence are good. We have shown grit and resolve most weeks. We are lacking size in the forwards and that is putting pressure on the halves. Until We get Kicks and Tommo back we are lacking size and workrate in the forwards. I would gamble on any 1-2 out of Pele, Flanno, KK and Topine. Pele and KK are size, Flanno and Topine are workrate, probably one from both columns, or just one.

Can you imagine if he was out there today and Rajab found him on one of those runs? The attack was much better but no surpise that our second half try came from Averillo being turned under and passing. Burton nearly made a break right up the middle off a similar play. All we need to add is some hard carries by big forwards up the middle, and fast guys out of dummy-half at the right time. I hope that we stick to this style off attack, and just add a bit more variety. With better support play and a couple of lucky bounces we could have scored 3-4 more trys. This style is much more entertaining and effective than DesBall. We have got little to lose by sticking with a style with a lot of ball movement. Even if the defence doesn't improve we might win some high scoring shoot outs with the odd lucky bounce. More so if we add more speed with Burns and Wilson replacing Alamotti and Perham. 1. Wilson 2. Kiraz 3. Burns 4. Averillo 5. Foxy 6. Rajab 7. Burton Can anyone think of a club side with a faster backline? Perhaps Nagas, Mullins and co for Canberra. If we lose a bit on yardage and catching bombs, we can make it up with ball movement and speed. If they lined up for a sprint here is my guess at the finishing order. 1. Foxy, 2. Averillo, 3. Wilson, 4. Burton/Burns/Rajab, hard to split - Kiraz a bit slower off the mark but would go close to matching the others at top speed. In this game we forced Parra to make a lot one-on-one tackles on a ball runner in space, In particular Burton and Preston had a lot of time and space. This style will suit Kicks. Foxy shifted in field a few times which was a good idea but we couldn't get him the ball in space. Turning angled runners under is a variation, Preston straightened the line a few times, the backrower running is a good option. Sure it needs a bit more work but the potential is there, shame that we couldn't defend, it might have been one of our better games.

Guys left out iif reserve grade are Flanno, Burns and Skelton. Flanno a good chance to play NRL, he might be part of the solution to the defence. A different player at hooker going by reserve grade form the position suits him.
Sure the attack needs fixing, but defence is the bigger problem at present.
We should be able to isolate Moylan with a long shift and run a backrower or even TPJ at him. Then hit that edge a few times before shifting left. We have a clear target to aim for.

Kiraz is playing injured, but they would not drop him to reserve grade, better a few weeks off. IMO Averillo is playing too well to be dropped. Or perhaps no one is being dropped, and 5 in reserve grade is some young guy.

Pehram may still work out but we need to try some new combinations. As we all know we need a seasoned half to teach our developing half and allow Burton to excel as 5/8. We should be prioritizing getting a Hint or Adam Reynolds to the club. We may even get Mitchell Pearce as we can get Atnold the Bulldog to close the deal (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) as we all know how much Pearce loves dogs.

An experienced half would be a good idea, not sure who to get. Probably not Pearce, Ben Hunt is ideal and worth the money. There are a few older halves with some NRL experience playing reserve grade at other clubs, Dean Hawkins, Kurt Falls, Jack Cogger, etc, that is the cheaper option. Or someone like Adain Sezer, or Pearce coming back from England. If we can't get Hunt go for a cheaper option, mostly we want composure and a good kicking game.

+x+x+x+xGuys left out iif reserve grade are Flanno, Burns and Skelton. Strangely there is not a 5 named in reserve grade. Yes, Burns and Skelton possibly playing NRL and someone dropped. Kiraz is playing injured, but they would not drop him to reserve grade, better a few weeks off. IMO Averillo is playing too well to be dropped. Or perhaps no one is being dropped, and 5 in reserve grade is some young guy. It's the mercy rule. We flogged Parra last week so have to play with 1 less.... Do we get one more in first grade?

From what I'm reading Flanno Snr. is in Hunt's ear wanting him to stay and is aiming to keep him No.7... (maybe that means he will be looking at junior as a No.9) (but this last comment is just my opinion no oil involved).

Top player, signed up on a big contract so if he wants him he'll keep him. As for Flanno Junior, he is of no consequence to us. Off contract, can't see why we would want him and don't see why he'd want to stay behind Mahoney, so just let him go.

I don't see us even close to pushing for a top 8 so we may as well test out Rajab at 7 and put Burton back to 6 and KO either off the bench or cup to hone his skills.
