+x+x+x+x+xQuestion for the should've paid 1.2-1.4M for Mitch Misses brigade... Was it worth it???... Once again..... This is is probably the 2nd best example of poor recruitment by us and best retention by parra. Moses missing, is clear to everyone that gels that Parra team and puts the W in their results column. You're on a roll with these wild posts, but hopefully you get one right soon. You should watch the Dogs presser and see Cirro's comments about Burto. I agree with Cirro, Burto is potentially the best player in the game, but he has a lot to learn and he has a lot of areas where he can improve. He needs a better halves partner and at a minimum we need Tracey at fullback or someone even better. The problem with targeting high priced star players is that they rarely leave their current club unless another club pays well over the odds. A secondary problem is that when they are injured there is a lot of salary cap sitting on the sidelines and the season can be over before they get fit. If Api wasn't injured the Dogs / Tigers game would have featured 7 ex-Panther players next season it will be 9. When is the last time Panthers poached a high priced star player from another side? The risk with Reynolds was always that he might get injured. The improvement in the Brisbane is far deeper than 1 player the problems at Souths are far deeper than one player. Of course its more than 1 player, but in most cases its that 1 player that triggers a change to the playing group and they all grow another leg. Whether its a cultural change, leadership, steering the ship, flamboyancy, footy smarts, etc it can have a significant effect. AR along with afew key other players have transformed the Broncos from wooden spoon to preniership favourites. Sure, its a disaster when the player is out and you have big money sitting on the sidelines, but at the same time, other clubs look at us and see large chunk of money sitting in reserve grade. You can only field 17 players after all. You mentioned penrith as an interesting example. They probably had a fairly even spread of cap when they first hit their straps in 2020..but since then, they've had to adopt of Melb Storm model of picking 4 or 5 players whom they value as their core and accept that everyone else is dispensable. Its the only way they can remain competitive but cap compliant. Storm did it with their spine (1,6, 7,9). Penrith did it with 1, 2, 7, 10, 13. Everyone else was dispensible. It has worked for them as they continually find players to fill the other spots, just like Melb did before them. In todays era of salary cap floor (min 95% cap spend) it actually makes even more sense to have 1,2 or 3 high priced players. We still continue to buck this trend but i feel to aim for a premiership means we will have to change our mindset in the future I think your argument is off here mate. What players in our reserves are on big money? What team isn’t paying decent money to their reserves? And more importantly, we tried to sign Shaun Johnson, Mitchell Moses and Jerome Luai all for big money. We just missed out on all. I cant say i know the figures, but my suspicions are that if we compare the % of cap spent on our reserve grade to that of other top 4 or top 8 teams, i would think we have a larger spend. This is mainly due to the salary cap floor requirements of the NRL but also due to us not valuing players over 1M and finally due to us being in rebuild and hedging our bets on a wider range of players. The top teams spend lions share on their top 20 and the rest are on minimal wage.

+x+xSexton is more chance to play NRL this season and I don't think Hutch is that bad You know, I don’t think there’s much chance of Sexton playing NRL this season except maybe the odd game covering injury. Sexton has a consistent problem. In hindsight he had the same problem at The Titans. He comes onto the scene, everyone thinks he’s a career NRL #7, then he fades, is dropped and eventually shopped out of the club. Red flag right there, which I’m sure both Gus and Ciro were aware of a the underlying problem, but they thought he was fixable so took the punt. And first few games for us he again looked every inch a career NRL #7, particularly the 2nd from memory, but then he just fades away, has an appalling end to season seemingly getting less effective every game. Which I know we did as a team too, he wasn’t alone - but we got rid of most of his mediocre mates didn’t we. So new season, new start. Now I don’t watch much Reggies but I read anything I can on them, and all reports are just more of the same from Sexton. One or two games in succession where he looks like a career NRL #7, then the same where he looks like a park footballer. And there is the consistent problem with Sexton - inconsistency. And I think it’s now too late for him to force his way into this team this season. Say he has blinders the next three games in Reggies, would you trust him to take that form into NRL for another three? How about another six? Do you think Ciro would? Hutch does not have the talent Sexton has, that’s undeniable, but what he does bring to the team he brings every week. If he has a below Hutch standard game he doesn’t have a below Hutch standard game the following week. At least a game plan can be built around knowing what you get from Hutch, which we have done and which atm is working. I reckon if there’s a long term injury to Hutch or Burton Ciro would look elsewhere, possibly Haywood. One or two games he could look to Sexton but I really think that’s where he’s at. Too late to save his career at The Dogs, I think he’s gone seasons end and if I were his manager I’d take him to SL for 2-3 seasons to find some consistency and then come back to The NRL. As much as i dont want to put a line through Sexton just yet, our team is better served with Hutch at 7 atm. And you've mentioned the reasons. Consistency from Hutch, which gives confidence to the players around him. Sexton will have to bide his time for now as i cant see CC making any changes. Burton is playing better in the current team and why would you change that? Its off the back of both our halves just providing early ball to our edges. If teams find a way to negate that, we will back to square 1 with our halves (both) in the firing line for not "creating" points. And that is where Sexxy is better than both Burton and Hutch. Ultimately we will need more creativity in the halves than Burton and Hutch. But it looks like the club is willing to tread water for now and keep fans happy with a team ranked around 6-10th until these young guys get a foothold in first grade.

+xAnd btw btw, Burton has been in tremendous form. Playing like you asked him to and playing like you asked him to on both sides of the field. Wouldn’t replace him with anyone else, wouldn’t play him anywhere else. Things may or may not change in the future, but right here right now Burton is Bulldogs #6 end of. Hes been in good form. Its mainly due to him understanding early ball to Kikau is better than short ball to Kikau. In fact its quite clear when you watch our halves play that they have been instructed (by CC and no doubt Taylor) to get the ball early to the edges and centres. Its why we have improved alot in attack. There will come a time however that creativity in the halves will be needed for us to become a mainstay in the top 8 and push towards top 4. And i just dont think he has it. But maybe we only need a top shelf halfback for that.....

Preston is the better attacking weapon, but he needs to form a good understanding with the half who has to throw him a short pass. Best early ball option that side is early ball to Chricton because he can commit two defenders or pass to a sweeping Tracey/ Taaffe. I compare Burton to Munster, similar sorts of players but Munster just has a bit more drive and takes bigger risks. Some of the risks Munster takes pay off. To complement Burton we need a Sherwin style halfback and a Kiks style backrower. O'Neill is very good. I thought Hayward was our future halfback until I saw O'Neill, there is something about the way O'Neill passes the ball that is unique. I've seen more good passes from O'Neill on the left, and I also saw some good passes and kicks from Hayward on the left. These days Burton seems to pass just as well on the right. Will not be surprised if O'Neill is great on the right, I just don't remember seeing it. Anyway Gus and CC have this in hand. We will not need to wait long for the answer on Sexton. Where my opinion differs from Zef is he may be working on something in reserve grade and the problem might be fixed. The other issue is Salary Cap, O'Neill is off contract most clubs know how good he is. We are going to need to make him a fair offer just to keep him, perhaps even a bit more than fair. That money has to come from somewhere and Sexton is off contract. So even if they are fairly happy with Sexton it might just come down to Salary Cap. I think when we signed Hutch that was always a possibility.

Our right side certainly could use a better ball playing halfback that can organise the team. Preston runs great lines. Critta does the same. But neither are being utilised well. O’Neill may be that player. But needs more time. Chad Townsend is that player but probably costs too much.
I think we need to stick with Hutch for a while longer or go into the market for next year

I am no coach and don't pretend to be one. Just as an observation from a passionate supporter, the team would not suffer if CC put Tracey at FB, moved Taaffe to HB, Hutch to Lock and Salmon to bench or cup. The right side is solid with Critta and Kiraz, though the left side looks a litte fragile in defence with Fox being out of position a lot looking for that elusive intercept and is susceptible to injury. Looking into the future, should Burto and Fox be selected for SOO duties, it would be easy to slot Wilson in on the wing and give Sexy the 7 and move Taaffe to 6. Just sayin'.

I can tell that the team is looking forward to testing themselves against the Panthers.
Like me the team knows that this will be a tough game.
We may win or the game may tell us where we need to improve.
My ideal result is a win, with a few things that we need to improve revealed.
Challenges for us-
1) Size, power and hard running of the Panthers side, we need the linespeed, and contact to be up to the task.
2) LInespeed of the Panthers.
3) fitness and going the full 80 in an intense game.
4) kicking game and kick chase.
One area where we have an edge is height on the wings, particularly Kiraz. I would like to see a well executed try off a kick.
Panthers will be up for it, they will want to beat Critter and Kiks.
What do I expect?
I am hoping that it is a close game and we edge ahead with superior execution, tries from kicks, fewer errors, going the distance in the grind.
We can't afford to let them get on top, if they are in a winning position, I can't see them giving us a chance, especially at the back end.
We might learn a lot this game - Go Dogs.

No to going market... I'll be surprised if we ever buy a halfback. (In the next few years) This season the only possible option to improve the right side is Sexton. Long term we have O'Neill, Woods, Hayward and there will be more young guys coming through. Gus thinks the best part of an NRL halves career starts at age 25, they need 50-100 games or more to kick that off. But the best ones are pretty good from game 1. For starters we are looking at a guy to play 1-2 seasons, and we don't know how long it would take any new player to build combinations.

Look. I’m the biggest fan of Woods. I believe he will be out next Thurston. But I have heard that says and thought that about many of our players. Robert’s and Mbye come to mine. So many others who didn’t make it.
That’s why we need an experienced halfback. Somebody that we are a chance of winning the comp with now.
I prefer not to throw all my eggs in the one basket.

I prefer not to throw all my eggs in the one basket. Have you seen how O'Neill plays? My impression is that he is very mature, level headed and competitive for his age, probably playing 2 years above his age. And his passing judgement, timing and execution is something that you can't coach. For someone playing hooker / lock Hayward is also a very good half option. I haven't seen much of Woods. We also don't have Payne Hass starting at prop or Turbo at fullback. There are a few positions that we need to strengthen. I'm suspecting that any short cut might end up in a blind alley. Sezer was the experienced halfback I thought we could get and having played against him I prefer Hutch. There are not many good experienced halves around, none or very few available and any that are will cost heaps. There are plenty of not that good experienced halves around. The guy I would target is the Raiders half, Fogarty, but I don't want Sticky putting a horse's head in Gus's bed. Mrs Gus just did the washing.

My observations too.... They are very good at doing it in a timely manner, with them making it seem like they've released but then it takes afew seconds for the player to turn amd face forward. Its clever as it slows the ruck but doesnt look like they are lying all over the player.

If you haven't showed something in those 2 years - you arent worth the gamble in persisting with. The biggest argument for 50 games or so is Thurston. I saw 5 minutes of him playing Flegg and knew that he was a gun. But when he came into the NRL I distinctly remember many clueless fans rubbishing him. There is no hard and fast rule but halback, fullback, and hooker are positions where a player has a lot less time in the NRL and a lot more pressure. Prop is physically demanding and a players body needs to be ready, and managing the week to week grind can take some learning. I just listened to 2 NFL players discussing stepping up to that level. First time a play is run at training the other players move so fast that their mind and body can't keep up. After they do that play 1,000 times they can move at the required speed. It is similar in the NRL, it isn't park footy. And it is a big step up from reserve grade. There is a train wreck of NRL halves who's career has been ruined by impatient unrealistic fans and desperate coaches.

Other than Bellamy or Bennett maybe even Stuart. I don’t think he would be playing do well. Most young halves struggle. But those three coaches make sure they are ready.

Good win in reserve grade 30-12.
2 players in the bin at the start and didn't concede a point.
Hopefully the NRL side can take some inspiration from that.

Good effort so far, Panthers a bit too good so far.
Cleary off injured might help us.

+xStill devoid of 50/50 calls are we? We are in this contest boys, make no mistake. A couple of errors gave them repeat sets and we couldn't capitalise on our prolonged posession at their end. Both Panfers tries were soft.

I think that we need to get Preston on
Give Salmon a spell on the bench and use him later
7 missed tackles by Salmon.
