Is the next preseason match Glory v Adelaide in Sydney this weekend?

Hopefully they'll step up a bit from the loss to Inglewood.
All very well saying it was a fairly strong Inglewood team.
Let's not forget they're rollicking along 9th out of 12 in the State league, with 3 draws and 3 losses from their last 6 outings.
Keeping the Glory tradition alive of playing teams into form.

What a stupid comment. The game v Inglewood was a 1-1 draw. The penalty shootout was a last minute decision so they could award the trophy.

Glory played the second half with their NPL team which is 11th in the league.

But their almost full strength team in the first half still only managed a 1-1 draw.

Does not inspire hope.

Ah yes, the first stupid comment I've ever seen here.

Hotrod is quite correct.
I want hope, and our first half 11 was pretty decent.
And more that anything, I really need this club to show me something to get me into buying a membership.
For the first year since god knows when, I haven't jumped straight into sorting it in advance.
For someone who has stood in exactly the same spot in the Shed for over 13 years without missing a single game, that is a big issue. The family certainly don't know what's happened with me.

[And just for the memories, that missed match was a 5 - 1 win over Sideney Olympic (who Glory will play in a few days).
10 February 2001, with goals from the usual Mori, Despotovski, Miller and Naven, and Olympic's from Pondeljak.
Thereafter every wedding, birthday, Christmas function, etc inconveniently scheduled on a Glory day is a non attendance.]

To compare to those clubs who've already started their pre-season friendlies too and their opening matches:

Melb Heartless - 7-0 v Whittlesea Ranges
Wellington - 2-1 v Wests
Sydney 5-1 v Macarthur Rams

That said, it is pre-season. But some people do love their results.

I'm with you, Shanagar, it doesn't feel inspiring at all. Especially when the coach's recruitment policy is straight out of the hand-book of David Mitchell (player's with national team 'experience'). History repeating.

After several months of reflection and looking at my bank balance after the world cup, 100% happy with my decision not to renew this season. Hope they do well, but fucked if I'm spending money I don't have on an organisation that is slapstick at best.

Different code, but it's our State and we're in it together.
Always interesting to compare and see any similarities by playing a simple game of Word Substitution:

Foley the driving force for change
Nick Taylor The West Australian July 14, 2014, 7:19 am

Just two years ago, the Western Force were the model example for underachievement.

Every excuse for losing had been well and truly used up and they had even invented a few new ones along the way. For most in the Eastern States, the Force had become irrelevant, nothing more than a pleasant stopover on the way to South Africa. The club was in crisis mode on and off the field. Poor results, falling crowds and no coach. Questions were being asked if the Force had a future in the competition.
Enter Michael Foley.

He quickly got to work and, to use one his favourite phrases, "ripped in". He had long discussions with the club's powerbrokers about the state of the squad, previous player signings and future recruitment.
He culled players who were happy to pick up a nice pay packet and do just enough to coast their way through their final days in Australian rugby before heading off into the sunset. Others who did not meet Foley's standards were shown the door. The Force were eclipsed 47-25 by the Brumbies in Canberra on Friday night, dashing the Perth side's bid for a maiden Super Rugby finals appearance.

"When I arrived it was almost like there were 10 commandments of why we lose," Foley said. "There was we never start well, we never finish well, we never win our third game, we never win at home, we have a losing culture."I can rattle those things off because I cannot believe how many times I heard those things said by different people."I sat back and thought 'this story has been handed on from one person to another and rattled off after each loss, therefore it's inevitable'. "They had allowed, or the club had allowed itself, to get to a point where it had so much negative rhetoric around it that it had infected people's minds.

"In the past, because of the negative rhetoric, it was easier to buy into anything that was said and move and ebb and flow with the tide of commentary. Our guys have now broken the shackles of what I saw as a self-fulfilling prophecy and negative talk."
Foley coined the phrase "relaunch" for his first season. In truth, it was a more of a splutter than a season on the afterburners.

This year the side played under his new tags - belief and attitude. The latter was even stitched into the neckline of their playing jumpers. "One of the things our guys have been good at is redefining ourselves," Foley said.
"The only way we're going to be able to do that was to do things we had not done before, to try and behave differently, to see ourselves in a different way."In 18 months these guys have shaken off extremely entrenched views, maybe there are some still lingering in some dark recesses, but it's been shaken and they have come out for their best-ever season."

When I arrived it was almost like there were 10 commandments of why we lose."Michael Foley

A mate of mine is cruising through the South Pacific and came across Jacob Burns having a kick around with some local kids and showing some good freestyle skills. Funny little clip on FB.

It is early days to be sure - first hit out and only a training run. But hardly a stupid comment. The first team drew first half, and the NPL team drew second half. Kenny is under pressure to win over what I would be guess would be a large number of fans. If he loses to Newcastle and is otherwise unconvincing early on, then it will hurt re: confidence in the coach and getting bums on seats.

Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe expects second-tier Sydney Olympic to provide the biggest test of a pre-season stretch featuring games A-League and top-flight European opposition.

Glory will play two friendly matches in Sydney before meeting high-profile Spanish club Malaga CF at nib Stadium on July 27.

They meet Adelaide United at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday before taking on former NSL rivals Olympic at the same venue on Wednesday.

The match between Glory and Olympic will be their first meeting in almost a decade and is sure to bring back memories of the famous grand final battles of 2002 and 2003.

Olympic won the first grand final encounter 1-0 courtesy of an Ante Milicic strike before Glory got revenge the next year, claiming their maiden national championship with a 2-0 triumph.

Glory legends Jamie Harnwell and Damian Mori were on the scoresheet on a historic day for the WA club.

Both grand finals were played in front of full houses at what was then known as Subiaco Oval.

Lowe led his new-look Glory side to a 1-1 draw against NPL WA side Inglewood United on Tuesday and was looking forward to testing his players with three games over the next week.

But he said the major focus would be on avoiding injury, with the club’s first competitive match of the 2014-15 season – a first-round FFA Cup tie away to Newcastle Jets – less than three weeks away.

“There are some concerns that maybe physically we’re not quite ready for three games in a week, but we’ll manage everybody’s load,” Lowe said at Perth Airport today.

“We’ve just got to be careful that we don’t pick up any injuries.

“The good thing is Adelaide are at the same stage as us and Malaga have just started their pre-season.

“Probably the biggest test will be Sydney Olympic because they’re smack-bang in the middle of their (NPL New South Wales) season.”

The Glory squad has undergone a major facelift over the off-season, with eight new recruits brought in.

Republic of Ireland striker Andy Keogh and former Socceroos attacker Richard Garcia will get more game time over the next week, while Mitch Nichols and Youssouf Hersi are in line to make their first appearances for Glory.

Almost the entire first team squad will travel to Sydney, with Ruben Zadkovich (overseas) and Young Socceroos trio Daniel De Silva, Riley Woodcock and Jordan Thurtell the only absentees.

Saw that article, it was a great read. Also listened to a great interview with their CEO on NTFS about a month back.

Shame there's no one and no chance of that happening at Glory.

Good luck to the Force.

LOL at Glory Twitter - a bit confused I think. Tweeted Maclaren and Marinkovich off at half time and then retweeted a pic of the second half goal with both Maclaren and Marinkovich in the wall! I did wonder, esp when they tweeted 8 names off at half time and only 5 to replace them! (beat me there Shanagar)

Also found a second half pic with Thwaite still on, so that's probably the other one of the 8 who didn't come off.

Adelaide bloke tweeting the game reckons Galekovic had nothing to do.

But, I will only start to sink the boot a little bit if we don't show any attacking force in the Newcastle game. These are too much of a muck around (esp with 3 games in a week, ending with Malaga) to really draw specific conclusions.

Of course, am concerned that we have signed Keogh for #9, instead of on the wing, and I still don't think we should have signed Zadkovich*, Garcia or Hersi at all. Should have gone for one import lead the line striker and one import central mid with that money.

* saw a Foxsports interview today with Zadkovich (done a while back), where he straight out said that he'd been told by the Jets that he had no future at the club, that he wouldn't be a starting midfielder and should look elsewhere, but that Kenny told him that he liked the way he played and so Ruben decided to come here. Ugh, stuff like that really makes it hard for me to believe in Kenny.

Western Force they would be one of the few sporting teams with less success than Perth Glory have had in the A-league.
I think Glory are in big trouble as you can already see Garcia has made the starting line up, along with Marinkovic.
Garcia will pull senior rank and make sure he plays 90 minutes.
Zadkovich is the only hope for Glory but if Zadkovich is playing the role of a lone wolf then he will end up like mcKay against Spain.

Was with you until .... "Zadkovich is the only hope".

Not a glory fan but it think it's a bit early for this sort of talk.

A few things.... Zadkovic to come into that team, Nichols will replace marinkovic I would imagine. De silva maybe even a sneaky. I don't think hersi started today and he will... Rostyn griffiths is in the mix too and he was bench today.

I just think you had zadkovic, hersi, nicholls, griffiths, de silva, sidnei to name the few that come to mind that could be starting this season.... That is potentially half your starting line up. And remember because of the large turnover you would expect them to take longer to gell, especially playing against a basically unchanged and already proven quality Adelaide side.

Just wanted to put things in perspective from a neutrals point of view. Yeah you haven't started with the world on fire but there are so many potential factors for that at this stage. Playing with a completely new midfield, completely new strike force and a new cb pairing this season.

Also bare in mind it was 0-0 at half time when the majority of the 'best team' was on... They had heaps of youngsters on second half when they conceded.

Hope Perth have a good season... If they didn't have Lowe as coach I would be certain they would. Still think they might though, just need to gel with their best XI in my opinion.

Ah beautiful, 'we need time to gel'.
Usually we make it to the 1st game before we get to this point.

A couple of us may recall hearing that phrase on previous occasions - like 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, I'll stop there.
As far as I'm concerned, the coach is professional (ok, use that term loosely), the players are professional footballers, and so on, so they can sort themselves out and get on with being a professional outfit that can play together. I'm sure they must learn something about who is who at training sessions all week for weeks on end.
Why is it only in football (soccer) and Glory in particular, the team needs to gel? I never hear it in any other team sports and they all manage.
Next thing you know, Kenny will start rattling that one off.
Glory should really take note of how Ross the boss Lyon conducts his setup - "we are a no excuses football club".
End of story.

But he was useless and only picked in the XI because of nepotism right?

Sigh.

Pre-season results are meaningless of course, but would be nice to get some offensive threat showing.
