HOW'S this for a bad omen at the start of an Ashes summer?

In the first one-day international for the season at the MCG, the loudest cheer in the early stages of the Australian innings came when Victorian captain Cameron White was bowled for a golden duck.

The unique circumstances of the match against Sri Lanka meant White and his team-mates were effectively the away side in the first of three one-dayers between the two countries.

Cricket authorities were quietly muttering their thanks that Melbourne's Sri Lankan community love their cricket so much.

Sri Lankan fans dominated - maybe by as much as 80 per cent - the poor crowd of about 10,000 watching the match.

Colourful and noisy, the Sri Lankans even had a small brass band to help create a canrival atmosphere on a cool, bleak spring afternoon.

It is also the last chance for Melbourne's Sri Lankan fans to see spin-bowling great Muttiah Muralidaran in action before his likely retirement at the end of next year's World Cup.

Several factors meant sports-mad Melbourne was almost ignoring this match.

The game was scheduled in the heart of the Spring Racing Carnival - the day after the Melbourne Cup and the day before Oaks Day.

This week, the city's sporting attention is on odds, not overs.

The weather has also been poor for several days, following Saturday's torrential downpour, and more scattered showers were forecast throughout Wednesday.

Also, who knew this game was on? There has been minimal publicity in Melbourne for the first major sporting event at the MCG since the two AFL grand finals.

The lowest crowd for an Australia-Sri Lanka one dayer at the MCG was 16,635 in early 1985 and Wednesday's match will come close to that.

But here's an another bad omen - the worst one-day crowds at the MCG for matches involving Australia were two 12,000 attendances in early 1979 against England.

That 1978-79 summer, England smashed the World Series-depleted Australia side in the Ashes 5-1.
