Definitely take 320-odd from the position we were in. Another mature hundred from Steve Smith, showing great leadership qualities. 2 centuries when we've needed it most.

Also, think Bailey is done for now. If we're rewarding batsmen on form, I don't think Doolan is the answer either - only 6 FC centuries, and one half century in his last 5 games.

Meanwhile Hughes has a 200, 2 100's and a 50 in his last four FC games. I don't think he should be discounted due to past failures, and he certainly has displayed mental toughness to keep scoring runs after being dropped so many times. Give him a decent chance, and don't panic and drop him after 2-3 games. He'll come good, and he's scored runs in South Africa before.

Can only imagine how big the rest of this match would be if the ten match mega-series was a thing

Was thinking the other the day who'd be more likely to accept a proposal before the start of this match to combine the result of last series with this one and make the 10 match series thing official. It's obviously all hypothetical, but I think the Aussies might well be up for it, in great form and would only need a draw this match. It would certainly be a gutsy, aggressive move in keeping with the gutsy, aggressive image Australia have created for themselves this series. Also a chance to completely write the horror series in England out of the record books.

Now where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, us a couple of years ago

Seriously though, I was thinking the same thing when you thrashed India two years ago and after the first two tests against South Africa last summer when you took it to the best bowling attack in the world. Then that all went to shit very quickly

Beat South Africa and you've got a case. Although it'll be interesting to see how you go about finding replacements for Rogers and Haddin when they retire soon. There are certainly good players out there but no one is setting the Sheffield Shield alight and it was having to find replacements for Ponting and Hussey resulting in an unsettled batting line-up with Watson, Hughes, Cowan, Khawaja and the like constantly being shuffled about in the top six that was a big reason for those awful two series in India and England. You're gonna want the guys coming into the side over the next few years to really stand up and cement their spot as quickly as possible. At the moment, you've got one in Bailey that needs runs. If it weren't for the fact the team is winning (and of course that record-equally over in Perth) he'd probably have a lot of people on his back.

Yeah we generally have a good record against South Africa in South Africa.

And while our series in India was ordinary (nothing new for Australia only one a single series there in 3 decades) our series in England was far from that, if you go by results and don't watch the actual games i can understand but we were only outplayed at Lords. Bell was your saviour over there.

I would've dropped Carberry before Root. That Leg spinner was pretty brave, good on him for taking the wicket but he bowled a lot of rubbish, a work in progress.

And good on Stokes really rate him.

The Ashes series was an improvement from India I'm not denying that mate  My point is you still struggled in the first two tests and a lot of that was down to you guys still trying to find your best eleven. We saw towards the back end of the series guys like Smith, Rogers and Watson make runs and stand them in good stead for the return series and meant that Australia had a much better idea of their best eleven when it came to selecting the team for Brisbane (the only question was who would take the final position in the top 6), and that's been a big reason for your success this series.

It will be interesting to see how the team goes when this sort of situation happens again and you have a couple of important players retire close together.

I wouldn't want to bat last on this pitch.

Australia, especially Harris doing what the majority of English bowlers couldn't, bowl a good length.

That's little comfort when your entire team learned their trade at the Chris Martin school of batting.

Ugh. There is everything wrong with the fact that the likes of Warner, Watson, Smith, Johnson, Lyon, Bailey, are going to be able stand alongside the likes of Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist, McGrath, Warne, and lay claim to winning the Ashes 5-0. It just isn't right .

Before this ashes series I hated cricket but kept up with scores sometimes. During the first test of this series I spent an hour or two watching it with the grandfather-in-lawgrandfather-in-law, and I've been legit hooked since.

So yes, I had to google what they meant by the nightwatchman. Yes, I knew a followon existed but didn't know the proper name.

But gimme time and I'll be all over this shit

So what should aus target here - getting 300 total and declare before end of tomorrow to give 2 days to bowl out england?

Nah, better to take as much time as possible imo.

Slow play and try to hang around for a long long time and try and get to the 400+ mark.

They'll use at least 1.5 days to get the job done.

A long way off being the most talented team we've had, but they seem to be as close a group of mates as I've seen. A lot of credit to Boof Lehman and Michael Clarke. We've had a production line of great captains over the years

The last five Ashes tours, the team that's won the Ashes has failed to win the ODIs. Hopefully the fresh faces coming into the side like Ravi, Morgs and Buttler can help reinvigorate the team somewhat, but I wouldn't count on it
