Who was the Hawks player(s) that nearly gave Adelaide the match in the 4th? Gave away a free-kick after they'd won one fifty out from there own goal.

Shoenmakers I think, he has a bit of a track record for making howlers. Tex Walker has cool nerves, kicked some big goals this arvo, I've been really impressed by him this season. Can't stand another Hawks flag, come on Sydney!

Was such a stupid thing to do, especially considering he would of thought at that stage they were about to get a 50metre penalty

Quote:Umpire Paul Fitzgerald bashed during A-Grade footy grand final at Port Pirie by: Bryan Littlely, Daniel Wills From: The Advertiser September 23, 2012 10:00PM A VETERAN football umpire says he is lucky to be alive after he was bashed and seriously injured in front of thousands of spectators during an A-Grade grand final at the weekend. The attack has renewed calls from authorities for people to consider the potentially deadly consequences of even a single punch. Paul Fitzgerald, 56, suffered a fractured eye socket and nose, and bleeding in his eye, when he was punched once in the head at Port Pirie on Saturday. The incident, allegedly involving a spectator, occurred during the three-quarter-time break as he umpired the Spencer Gulf Football League grand final, between Solomontown and South Augusta. "I've never seen an umpire get hit before," Mr Fitzgerald told The Advertiser yesterday. Paul Fitzgerald was allegedly assaulted while umpiring the A-Grade grand final at Port Pirie. Picture: Brooke Whatnall "It happened so quickly. The officials asked him to go away as he approached and then it just happened." "He just said: 'Are you Fitzy?"' Mr Fitzgerald said. "I said 'yeah mate' and he hit me." Threats have been made against Spencer Gulf Football League umpires on social media sites in recent weeks. Mr Fitzgerald's son, Josh - who is also an umpire - reported a Solomontown player during a match two weeks ago. .Mr Fitzgerald, who has umpired about 600 games in a career spanning more than 25 years, said yesterday he was still in pain and would consult a plastic surgeon about his injuries today. "There's no doubt it could have been worse," Mr Fitzgerald said. "Twelve months ago I had a four-way (heart) by-pass ... what's to say it couldn't have set that off. You look at what happened with that guy at the Gawler hotel who died from a punch or young Sam Davis. That's what this was, one punch that could have been as deadly." South Adelaide junior footballer Sam Davis died after being hit at a party in 2008. Such incidents have led to News Limited's Real Heroes Walk Away campaign to end violence on our streets and in our pubs and clubs. A police spokesman yesterday confirmed a man had been arrested over the attack on Mr Fitzgerald. "Police arrested a 35-year-old man from Port Pirie (on Saturday) and have charged him with assault cause harm after he allegedly punched an umpire at a football match in Port Pirie," he said. He will face Port Pirie Magistrates Court in late October. The spokesman would not say whether alcohol was believed to be a factor. In another violent incident on Saturday, a Bordertown man suffered serious head injuries in a fight. The 25-year-old was flown to Flinders Medical Centre after the altercation in Binnie St about 11.40pm. Another man, also 25, from Bordertown, was charged with assault causing serious harm. He will appear in the Bordertown Magistrates Court on October 26. Commissioner of Victims' Rights Michael O'Connell said unruly behaviour in sport was a menace to decent spectators' enjoyment and wanton violence was not sport but a crime. "Real heroes stay cool in the heat of the moment," he said. "I condemn such violence, which can result in horrific injuries or tragically deaths. "One punch is all it takes to cause serious harm, even kill someone." Mr Fitzgerald's alleged attacker has no official ties to either Solomontown or South Augusta football clubs. He was wrestled to the ground by Mr Fitzgerald's son, Josh, and an off-duty police officer who were also umpiring the game. He reportedly suffered a broken collarbone in the struggle. Mr Fitzgerald was unable to umpire the last term of the game, which was won by South Augusta. He was treated at the ground by medical staff and after being awarded a medal for officiating in the game, was taken to Port Pirie Hospital for treatment. Mr Fitzgerald, a Metropolitan Fire Service station officer, said he was unlikely to continue umpiring and thinks the league will lose more umpires as a result. Sport Minister Tom Kenyon said attacks must be condemned, while opposition sport spokesman Dan van Holst Pellekaan wants the incident fully investigated. "Violence on the sporting field of any type is reprehensible," Mr Kenyon said. "An attack on an umpire is completely unacceptable." Mr van Holst Pellekaan said he had received a detailed first-hand report of the alleged attack. "This is not a reflection of football in the Upper Spencer Gulf," he said. "If it is proven that the incident was as dramatic and cowardly as it appears then I hope that the full force of any penalty possible is applied." http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/umpire-paul-fitzgerald-bashed-during-a-grade-footy-grand-final-at-port-pirie/story-e6frea83-1226479835279

I'm a big admirer of Garry Abblet but seriously, how any player can consistently pull three votes when his team is constantly getting thumped by 60+ points is beyond me. Says a lot about the calibre of his support, no other player gets votes when their teams are so considerably outclassed purely because they aren't surrounded by such inferior team mates that make them stand out so much.
Was happy Swanny pulled a fair few votes in the end, thought his season was just as good as last, just hurt by Beamsy and Pendles.
Congrats to Watson, not his biggest fan but he seems a decent bloke and he deserved it as much as anyone else. On another note though, fuck me there was some talent on display tonight, off the top of my head Sloane's missus was one of the standouts.

Yeah I thought Sloane was the MVP last night, she was stunning. On the Ablett votes, I completely agree. If Watson had of been caught last night, it would of been because of his teams loss of form, he was still quality when they were losing. For me ablett is undoubtedly the best player in the comp so I don't mind too much, and I think the whole voting structure needs to change, unless your a ball winning midfielder your no chance.

This year just reinforced how much of a joke the Brownlow is. Congrats to Watson and all. But Ablett continuing to get votes for just showing up, and Judd getting 2 votes for a week he was rubbed out for 4 games...it's ridiculous.

Cloke re signs with Collingwood.
I know he cops a lot of shit but I'm stoked personally, without a strong presence like Cloke up front our team is a lot worse off, especially when Dawes is such a spud.
Harry O re signs too, have a feeling he might have sacrificed some of his own contract to keep Cloke on, as I've seen interviews with O'Brien saying he would leave his negotiations aside so the club could focus on retaining Cloke. With clubs like GWS and the Suns swooping these days, we've managed to tie down new deals for key players like Beams, Cloke, Sidebottom and O'Brien this year which is great form, plus we kept them away from Pendles, Swanny and Thomas last year.

You know you're a shit footballer when you're compared to Cloke and come off looking like the bigger spud.

I know Cloke cops a lot of shit and he's not worth what we're paying him, but there really are few key forwards I'd take over him, Franklin is perhaps the only one and even then he's not that much better in terms of kicking accuracy but he is a mercurial player. Cloke is key to the way we play, and there's no one better than him in contested situations, his strength is key for us as we rely on our midfielders to score most of our goals.
