The AFL get preference on the venue for 26 weeks of the year, they can suck it the fuck up for one week.

The big plan for the AFL is to convince cricket to book a different ground in case of Victoria hosting the Sheffield shield so that the AFL can start their season a week earlier.

It's crazy that an 85k opening round game is foregone in case Victoria host the Sheffield Shield, once a decade, in front of 800 people.

It is called the Melbourne Cricket Ground, always has been, always will be - but we all know who has been paying for it for over 110 years.

Cricket should be thankful if they can have it for 24 weeks of the year.

Not really.

If the AFL chose to walk away from the MCG (as has nearly happened on at least two occasions over the last 40 years), the MCG would need to be reduced in capacity because its AFL games which produces 90% of its income.

Some soccer fans on 442 truly believe that its the AFL who goes to the MCG with the begging bowl - nothing could be further from the truth.

Ultimately, the MCG Trust and MCC members know which side of their bread is buttered, and the AFL will get its way.

Melbourne to have first all female team

HISTORY will be made on Saturday 29 June, when Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs go head to head on the MCG in the first AFL women’s game.

Melbourne is extremely proud to be the first AFL club to have a women’s team – a natural fit for the club that founded the game.

The Club has an ongoing, genuine investment in women’s football, which is demonstrated in community programs such as the Trident’s High Performance Academy and Dare to Dream programs and as the only AFL club to be the major sponsor of a women’s football league – the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL).

Community Manager, Debbie Lee said, “It’s an absolute credit to the Club that we’re not only backing this initiative but also conceptualized it. It’s another example of the Melbourne Football Club’s genuine commitment to women in football.

Female participation is the fastest growth area for the AFL so it’s important that the wider football community not only acknowledges this but activity supports women in football.

Women and girls will now have the opportunity to play in an AFL team and this game is an important step towards implementing an elite National competition.

Other sports have successfully developed elite female competitions and our sport should be no different.”

The first women’s game will act as a pilot to support the AFL’s vision of a nationally televised female competition by 2020.

It is hoped that this game brings to life the notion to all girls that, one day, they could play footy for their AFL club in a female division.

The match will be a feature of Women's Round (Round 14), and will be played before the Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs match.

Why would it have to reduce its capacity? It still gets major attendances through the rest of the year from other events.

The MCG gets 90% of its revenue from hosting AFL games. It needs the AFL as much as, if not more than, the AFL needs the MCG.

In short: no AFL - no 100,000 capacity.

Boxing Day, T20's, concerts, et al.

Mister Football can go "derp the MCG would be ruined without the AFL". But do you think their running costs would be even a 10th of what they are without AFL games?

You reckon the MCG could lose 90% of its revenue and still be able to maintain a stadium of 100,000 capacity? And that's before we even get to having to finance hundreds of millions of dollars of private debt which has rebuilt the MCG brick by brick over the last 15 years.

AFL games cover the private debt and interest - Government tips in very, very little into the MCG.

There's been 2 concerts at the MCG in the past 15 years.

The cricket sure, but how many of those are actually "Major Attendances"?. I don't really agree with Mr.Football's contention, but he is correct that the AFL is responsible for most of the attendances, and hence income for the MCG.

Yarra Ranges junior football clubs struggling to attract players

Staff Writer From: Free Press Leader March 29, 2013 12:00AM

JUNIOR football in Yarra Ranges is in crisis, with one club close to folding its junior program and others unable to field teams.

At a meeting of the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League (DRJFL) recently, several clubs revealed they did not have enough junior footballers.

Why are clubs struggling to attract players? Tell us below.

DRJFL public relations officer Kelly Stokes said the Olinda-Ferny Creek and Upwey-Tecoma Football Clubs would combine to field an under-14s team.

Ms Stokes said that for the third year running Yarra Junction Football Club did not have any junior players.

She said the DRJFL faced stiff competition from the Eastern Football League, with many promising junior players leaving for bigger clubs like Coldstream, Lilydale and Montrose.

It comes after Leader reported that Belgrave Junior Football Club was struggling to attract players.

Club president Michelle Booth said her club was low on numbers for under-12s.

Ms Booth said junior football participation was being threatened by soccer and basketball.

Last year (do not have the Sydney & Brisbane TV ratings) this game rated 444k Mel, Adel 117k, Perth 104k + 245k for Fox. Giving total of 910k (excluding Sydney & Brisbane).

This year rated 858k for these same cities (excluding Sydney & Brisbane). This year will be a good comparison as is the second year of Fox and FTA TV.

Interesting that Perth are using a digital channel this year and the A-League will be on digital next year (SBS2). The majority of the drop is due to the Perth market.

Would be interested if anyone has the numbers for Sydney & Brisbane from last year.

Noted the NRL on Adelaide digital TV scored a 1k rating last night and they want to put a team here in Adelaide.

Big ratings for North v Collingwood.

Mediaweek ‏@MediaweekAUS

Sun STV #AFL #aflnorthpies 326k #afldeespower 192k

Dees vs Power not too bad for two low profile teams, where game was over by half time - that game also got 101k on ch7 in Adelaide.

The AFL opening round last year got 5.253m cumulative figures (foxtel + FTA Metro) with 2 games over 1m ratings in 2012 (this excludes FTA regionals)

Using the above figures:

3.538m + 326k + 192k + 101k = 4.157m with 1 game to go.

I expect Hawks vs Cats to be a big-rating game - should push it past 5m at a minimum.

I think they will crack 5m but will be slightly down on the 2012 figures, interesting that last year the fox ratings for the first round was 1.985m this year to date 1.923m, so I would assume they will be well up on last years figures with one traditional Melbourne game to go.

FTA will be down on the opening round, continuing last years trend of Fox up and FTA. Early days though but interesting trend to follow.

Stuff FTA TV! That's a crock!

Many of us here have been to England, and there is no sport (or anything!) on FTA TV

The EPL is on Sky, the compromise comes in the form of 'Match of the Day' on BBC, and Cricket is on Sky, as a compromise they broadcast an hour highlights package of the day's play on Channel 5 (or whichever channel has it)

Reckon this is where sport is heading here.

So be it!
