Get fucked. I've been consistently going to most smfc games for the past decade, and they play in what country? He meant, top level football, not the minor version. Then why didn't he say it? My apologies, I don't follow any teams in the EPL, but I know all the best players. Ur actually so dense First you tell me to get fucked, now you calling me dense, charming bloke!!! I hope you don't have children. HAHA fair enough, why not? Because they won't put up with bs from ppl like you? Oi - no need to behave like this, robbos is cool relax He's not behaving like it, most of the people on here (including urself) are cool and are down to talk, having proper convocations about football but our friend Robbos just likes to make snarky comments. But you are the one calling me dense & telling me to get fucked because I asked whether you followed football in this country because you asked about Bratten, one of the top players in Australia, though getting long in the tooth. But I'm the nasty one? never have I told you to fuck off or call you dense. Who is Bratten mate? Is he that guy with the headband that plays for MaCarthur that was complaining about the pitch at Lakeside being "too spongy" and then the next week played on a paddock with rugby union markings on it? HAhahaha is he one of the top players in Australia? The guy is a hack mate, nothing but slow movement and clumsy challenges, shouldnt have even played in the final but for lenient reffing in the semi. oh dear Robbo. Mono, he's an old man now, why SFC let him go. Bit like me on a English football forum asking who is this James Milner guy because I don't have a team in the PL. Not exactly... Im not on any English football forums but football fans there have a unity of purpose as their clubs are ALL linked... People who have teams in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th divisions keep an eye out on the EPL as they dream of one day playing against these clubs.... sigh, how wonderful that would be eh? Instead of this plastic super league you are so fond of. You have the Australian cup, you can dream of playing SFC one day. You really think that as a Derby supporter I dream of playing Liverpool or Man City, you have got to be joking. Liverpool if you now include Chiesa, he was quality 3 years back, not sure now, but if you include him Liverpool has 6 world class strikers, Jota, Diaz, Salah, Nunez, Gakpo, how does any team bar the top 4-5 teams compete with that (I laugh when people say only Man City cheating). No thanks I'd rather stay in the championship where we have a chance to beat all teams.I watch the PL for the players, the clubs have stuffed up the competition, how surprising Man City, Liverpool & Arsenal top 3, YAWN, again. I dream of the day these BS rich clubs piss off to the European Super league. Oh, I see now... got ya.. your that type of supporter... all good,,, stay happy with mediocrity... explains your views on the Socceroos as well.. all good mate. Maybe one day, if you ever get the chance, ask some of your fellow Derby supporters if THEY dream of the EPL or not... you may be surprised. Just go to super league, it's an unfair competition, I would take any 1 of the 3 world class forwards you have sitting on the bench & build my team around them & play in the PL. The Derby I followed won the English div 1 (now known as PL), now it's the same clubs that buy the competition, it's not football. I dont disagree that money has created a huuuuugee gap but it IS still football... Derby can ON THE PARK can still dream man...... Were arguing two different points I think. I'm not arguing, I'm showing you that as a Derby fan, I will never see or dream of them winning the PL & this will never happen in my lifetime, I blame the big clubs for causing this HUGE gap. So I just watch the players. You may never see Sth Melb in the Australian top flight again & you blame the clubs & the APL, I can understand that, but you blaming the fans & the players of the A-League as well, which is what I don't understand. Why not mate? Leeds fans where resigned to never plating in the EPL for decades, as where Forrest fans.... Lets not mention Leicester... the gap is ridiculous and only growing bigger I agree, but the point is there IS an avenue if the clubs chooses to take it.... As for blaming players.... thats not really accurate either mate, players are players... If I say I dislike someone or do know another has nothing to do with where they play... As for the Aleague fans... well, they support a system that discriminates against the other 1000+ cubs in this country... some of them have no idea and are blameless consumers which is fair enough but SOME, know very well what they are supporting and are the cause of our shambolic football culture in my opinion.
See this is where we see it differently, take Forest for example, what a brave win against Liverpool for Forest fans, they should be proud, they played pretty woeful football, hung on, backs to the wall, relied on Liverpool having an off day in front of goal & scored a lucky goal, is this football? Not for me. Compare that to Osasuna, who scored 4 against Barcelona, playing champagne football, na I prefer Derby to play decent football to back to the walls football against the big teams in the PL. Funny you should mention Leeds my Leeds mate says he's happier with Leeds in the Championship, much fairer league. I spoke to my friends yesterday & said a team like the Mariners (back to back A-League champions) would never win in the PL ever again. I remember Derby winning 2nd division & winning the Div 1 2 years later or Notts Forest went from Div 2 champions to Div 1 champions to European cup winners in 3 years. Every club that comes up, 2 of them go back down the following year these days. I call this a system that does not support all but 5-6 clubs in the English football. While not a closed shop as in the A-League, it might as well be. Funny too that you follow the AFL & that is a closed competition too.
Forest v Liverpool is a great example. Three sets of football fans watched that game all around the world. Liverpool fans - would have been disappointed at the poor finishing on display and the unexpected loss. Neutral fans - would have seen a toothless tiger get beaten by a woeful team through a stroke of luck and poor defending Forrest fans - would be jumping up and down for joy beating a hated enemy through sheer determination and hard work. That is pure football. yes economically unfair, yes structurally unfair how it is set up that the haves will ALWAYS have a better chance than the have nots but .... the have nots at leastr get a glimpse of joy every now and then. If the EPL was clsoed off then this match never happens and forrest fans never get to experience it.... A system that doesnt support the bottom 90 clubs as much as it supports the top 5-6 in the pro system is a hell of a lot betetr tha a system that doesnt allow the bottom clubs a chance at EVER playing against the top clubs.... As for AFL, mate that isnt even a sport... Thats a local pastime that has great financial and crowd support in 3/4 of Australia. They are an entertainment product, as long as there are teams to play and TV timeslots to fill they dont care about how good the product on the pitch is, who have they got to compare it too anyway? Think of AFL like WWE wrestling, or big bash cricket or Aleague football.. it just exists to have a shopfront to sell things to consumers...
You speaking from a Liverpool fan (one of the top 6) & I'm seeing it from a Derby fan. It doesn't affect you, it affects me. When you next play Arsenal or Real Madrid, fighting for the PL or Europena glory, you're not thinking of Notts Forest or Derby fans. I'm a SFC fan (a bit like the Liverpool fan), I'm OK this is how the APL runs it, I don't agree with no P/R, but this is what we have, so it doesn't affect me like it affects you. I will be in 2-3 weeks time in a sold out Parramatta stadium against our bitter rivals & the atmosphere will be unreal & unfortunately I'm not thinking of Sth Melb fans.
Fair enough mate... I hope you beat your bitter rivals... Enjoy the game and the atmosphere, I dont begrudge you that. Have fun. Must be comforting to not really worry about whether you win or lose the match, the result itself is beside the point.. its all about the coloured smoke and the little songs.
I seriously hope one day I can hate (in the nicest possible way) on you from a SFC v Sth Melb game in the top flight. I fully understand your plight & would suggest you continue your grievances with the FA & the APL, (who would struggle to run a chook raffle), but then I also think that FIFA are just as bad, as a matter of fact far worse, but I still tune in for every World cup, Euros, Asian cup & concaf.
Even better a SFC v SMFC match were the loser gets relegated! hahahahahahahahahahaahahahaahahaahh Oh shit I can dream can't I? Its all good bloke, enjoy your football as I know you do.... I hate FIFA, UEFA, FA all the bloody "suits" are just as bad as each other... my only "crime" is I love my club too much

Am I missing something when did we directly blame fans / players for us not being in the a-league?

I know you don't follow the A-League & I'm sweet with that, but Bratten has been a 4 times A-League Champion & 4 times A-League team of the season. I'm sorry you don't like him, but hard to argue his credentials. I'm not a big fan of Jordan Henderson, dumb of him to go to Saudi where his running, his main attributes, was never going to amount much in the heat, you need to rely more than than your physical strength when playing in the heat, but I would struggle to argue against his credentials for Liverpool. I dont have ANY feelings about him mate, never seen him play apart from one or two matches... For a player who is such an Aleague legend Ive never heard of him play for the national team..... Jordan Henderson wore the three lions shirt 80+ times mate... the comparison is laughable. Doesn't say much, England tend to pick Runners instead of players, but then I don't watch England, so know his England career little. I prefer players, Hendo is a runner. But even though like you (in Australia) my team in England is not not in the PL, I still know of him, especially when talking football in a country forum.

I'm not a big fan of Jordan Henderson, dumb of him to go to Saudi where his running, his main attributes, was never going to amount much in the heat, you need to rely more than than your physical strength when playing in the heat, but I would struggle to argue against his credentials for Liverpool.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xDoes anyone rate Brattan? Not super familiar with his career. You don't watch football in this country.

Someone was actually kind enough (unlike urself) to reply to my comment and outline Brattan's career. I knew of him and new he was at city (at some sort of capacity), but thats why I said 'super familiar'. I'm sorry If I offended you, and for not being well versed with someone who's peek was a decade ago whilst making 0 senior mens national team appearances.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xThere is a numptie over at "the roar": who claims the Bulls will be getting 5 thousand fans through the gates this season (amongst other outlandish jibes at the "effniks") so Sunday should see at least 1/4 of these rusted ons come down for the final... surely? Another contributor interestingly claims South Melbourne has been given massive government grants otherwise they would be in the state league and "smaller" than other Greek Australian clubs around the country?!?!!? Hahahaha my word, the hatred runs sooooo deeeeep its complimentary. Tis madness to attract your own sport. The theme of all boats rise on an incoming tide seems lost on many as you say tribal folk. If I may indulge your time a little I went to watch a couple of weeks back a U 14 match between Apia n Gladesville Spirit. What I saw was decent folk there with their kids plus an awful lot of football knowledge. Last week went with a mate to watch the Mariners academy U14 play. Guess what I saw a lot of decent folk who had great knowledge of football. I think some people forget we are made up of mostly ordinary people just trying to do the right thing. I am so so so over the infighting and dick measuring. Sure mate, its terrible what people like your buddy over at the roar does in the name of defending the APL... Some things will never change unless we discuss the "wrongs" in this system though. I am not surprised one little tiny bit that you had a similar experience with like minded football people at APIA, Gladesville AND Mariners U14 game.... Of course you did, these clubs wouldnt exist if people diodnt adore this sport...... only difference is that the APIA and Gladesville folk will NEVER be allowed to cheer their senior team against Mariners in a league setup ..... why? THATS the question. Is there anything wrong with them or their clubs? Are they bad people? Are their kids and families not the same as any other Australian? I think we both want the same thing and that is a full FIFA system... we differ in how to get there.... my path is more build a successful league and increase Football to the point a FIFA system can be introduced ... your path as I understand it is to jump to a FIFA system now .... I suggest our differences are where we see Football in the Australian sporting environment .... at present I don't think the Australian public at large """respect """ Australian Football enough to support at a meaningful level a full FIFA model.... meaning we have to build that respect and I see that coming from a meaning first division.... I guess you see it differently and I respect your views... However that we both want a full FIFA model is not in question simply the best way to get there is the debate.. The A-League has had 20 years do create a 'respectable' league and it shoots itself in the foot every 5 years or so. The fans are there, the interest is there I think you would be surprised how many people of a certain generation follow (in the loosest terms) soccer than dare I say it ... AFL..., Members of the Australian public who are probably willing to go to a first division Australian soccer game (who don't already go) don't respect the A-League because theres no pro/rel and they don't care for expansion teams. I hear you, and yep the A_l has had 20 years... but we also had 70 + years before the A-L.... Without writing a book on the why's and where's... Australian professional Football has never had the respect it needs to create a fan base that would support a proper first division and divisions below at a high level of quality .... Until we learn to respect the quality of our players and coaches, respect the game as a whole we will struggle.... Your point on how poor our management has been is very true.... its hurt a lot... Thats the question atm ... How do we get people to 'respect' Australian Football? Do we get respect and then change the system or change the system and then gain respect. Yep IMO you need strong financial systems in place to ensure you can get a higher quality of players.... and in the eyes of the broader mainstream its a solid and reliable competition... Changing the system, sounds the right way to go...my personal thoughts are Football would struggle to gain respect of the broader public and the Euro snobs would feel its befilth them to even talk about.... I often refer to the MLS and look at what and how they have achieved what they have from a starting point well well well behind where the A-L started and the NSL for that matter... they believe they need to build a fan base and so far they have and they receive less than 10% of their revenue from broadcast mostly from crowds, sponsors and merchandise sales. The A_l needs to build its crowds IMO to an average of 15K, with say Div 2 teams an average of around 5K.... then we have a foundation to build P & R... put in a plan to get there with measurable KPI's.... I believe if you told the good folk of SM, and similar clubs, you guys average 5 to 6K per game over a season with you guys helping the A-L get to 15K per season and we have the base to move to P & R... those Div 2 clubs would help build the A-L as it would be in their interest... IMO the secret is putting in place a model where its in everybody's interest for everyone to grow and get better.. Sorry Mid I dont follow, are you saying that crowds need to increase BEFORE clubs are able to get promoted? How? Playing in the same old stale league they are now? Its not working at the moment, what do you think will change if the "carrot" of maybe/possibly/one day promotion was on the table? How are Auckland, and WU and Macarthur , allowed to have a direct place in the Alegaue with NO HISTORY of a paying crowd coming to their matchs beforehand? The "eurosnobs" arent going to watch them, the existing local football fans arent paying to watch them and "mainstream Australia" doesn't even know they exist..... Before the NSL we had 4-5 very very strong state league comps and yes a national competition was perhaps rushed and unprofessional.... but 27 years of the "effnik" disaster and 20 years of the "franchise disaster" and NOTHING has really changed.... surely its time to try plan B? Mid believes the MLS methods that for one we have no chance doing with pittance compared to billions for starters. Next their model is make believe in the big picture like the most of their sports they had no choice but to follow Franchise paths. We started by UK settlers/convicts followed by euro migrants by the plenty. We/they come from lands with P/R hence this current systems dilemma and barrier appeasing to the many beneath who dont want to grasp APL. Not All eurosnobs are totally closed about local football, countless of them are involved in grass roots and NPL lands. IF there ever was a NST some would gain interest. A football league doesn’t start from having the top all primed up and go from there for many have No connect. It won’t filter down no matter the bells and whistles working on fans to get to a game. Maybe some like in the past but it won’t last again till there is local roots input and chance to go up and go down. The emotional feel counts hence we are nothing like USA. USA buys into everything to get a ROI - they are only worried about the buck !
Oh the final - lost interest once no NPL in it I lost interest when Manly Vale got knocked out in the early rounds. Then was interested with SFC, lost interest when they got knocked out. Just watched the final. Haha I’d luv one of our local association clubs go a bit deeper one day but huge challenge let alone the NPL’s. Manly vale - did you ever frequent Bryant’s ? Did I ever frequent Bryants, yes it was walking distance to where I used to live, now a big housing estate. :(Prior to internet this was the go to pub to find out all the local scores every sat arvo. I saw a lot big bands in my young days there. Haha pre tech. some of my biggest and epic nights was seeing Angels Oil’s etc incl up the road Antler amongst other venues. Pre breath testing and FREEDOM.

It might happen, do we know if the state league teams are subject to the new npl youth requirements?
