The best team DIDNT win tonight. Very luck Aust What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Holman Seals Roo Victory? A LATE goal from Brett Holman gave Australia an unlikely 2-1 victory over local rivals New Zealand in their farewell clash at the MCG tonight.Have your say.

i think some of our top senior players like breciano, grella and moore looked really of the pace tonight. So it wasnt a surprise that australia only got into the match when those three were off.

BRETT HOLMAN HATERS CAN GO EAT A BIG FAT DICK (though I'm sure you're on it every night)
Lets put it in perspective - yes, NZ were better in the first half, but we gave them a footballing lesson in the second half - the lesson: play til the final whistle LOL.
Furthermore - we were playing without: kewell, emmerton, chipperfield, schwarzer, wilkshire (so five of our automatic starting XI). We were always going to be fielding an experimental side - the kiwis were fielding their strongest side...and still lost.
Pretty ironic Rory Fallon (WHO THE F*CK IS RORY FALLON???!) talking up injuring Aussie players mid-week, and no less than 3 kiwis went off with injuries. F*ck, you wanna talk smack, accept the consequences - c*nt.

Maybe we didn't deserve the win, but they weren't better than us. Curiously we played better after the changes. Craig Moore for Beauchamp was a good move, still worries in the air though. Liked Vidosic's game when we pushed on forward in the 2nd half. To miss the plane for me; Holland, Lowry and Nick Carle (or Garcia).

Good game for showing up weaknesses. Think both teams will struggle playing like that. Will be interesting to see how we go next week. Good lead in game as long as we lift each game we play and start to finalise our 11 to get some consistancy.

Culina has to play more forward ... he was the only class on the pitch , well him and Elliott.

Holman played very no one can take that away form him he made good runs and had a good finish say what you want he played well.
On the flip side what the HELL WAS MOORE DOING when NZ scored?? we ducked under the ball!!! and let it go to Killen thats disgracful.
Vidosic is a real shining light for Australia another good finish.
Culina play very well second half no touches
Jedi played well
David Carney playing shocking lost the ball 2/3 three times he had it.
Fredici how did liverpool ever want him?
Overall a dissapointing 1st half but i think we played well in the 2nd New Zealand played well i felt.
Holman has got to have gone form Zero to hero that was a fantastic run and a fantastic goal. I never throught he was any good i asked my self why pim kept picking him but i think i see why hehas pace and he may lack on the ball ability but he really runs and that might be the of the bench injection the Socceroos need like Cahill was in 06!

Cahill foot 3 feet off the ground with studs up and Robbie and SImon say accidental contact. I am huge Aus fan, but cmon it wasn't accidental, he got him good!!! Don't even get me started on Grella's that was worse!!!
Good second half by Aussies. Found way to win!!!

Hope Moore gets cut, he is not up to it and was a step too slow. Wished Tommy Oar got more of a run and I wanted to see what Nicky Carle would have done had he got onto the pitch. We seem to win ugly with Pim but a win is a win I suppose, can't wait for the next few games vs Denmark and those Seppos.

Just watched the replay carefully and Moore was at fault for their goal. The poor bloke on the inside had 2 to mark and tried to stay closer to the man closest to the goal which left the bloke who scored on the outside free.

Disgusting performance by Australia in the first half. Cahill, Grella and a few others were not mentally prepared for this game at all and resorted to some dirty tackles in frustration. Moore should be chopped for Millsy IMO. I liked how the attitude of the team was vastly improved when there were people on the park who wanted to be there. The only positive was the two Aussie goals coming from Vidosic and Holman, good finishes both of them.

Tonight's performance is no indicator of how the team will go in the World Cup. Before 2006 Australia struggled against Liechtenstein before winning 3-1.
That was a disgraceful tackle by Grella on Bertos....but it is true to form, he's always been a bit of a thug. Personally, i feel embarassed being an Australian football fan when i see that rubbish....in a friendly FFS.
Grella should go into the room of mirrors and have a good hard look at himself.
Moore is clearly past his prime. Oh well, Wilkshire and Chippers to come back
Good stuff Vidosic, i like that kid, i bet he scores in the World Cup

CroatianDaniel wrote:Australia deserved to lose, VIDOSIC SCORED, SO ECSTATIC ABOUT THAT! we didnt deserve to lose but the goal at the end doesn't show that we dominated the game thats for sure. New zealand were pretty ordinary in the second half compared to the first but it goes to show that some re-organisation and our game can be put back on track by the coach. Obviously, this was no where close to our first choice team. Lol, when holman scored, All i could think about was all the haters crying out at the same time and not actually supporting the australian cause. We snuck it in but its a win and regardless, im sure from this game they'll rectify those problems or at least lessen it by the time the world cup comes. It looked to me that new zealand wanted it more and it showed that we were quite nervous to begin with. Brad jones did a good save in the second half, federici was okay though that 1st goal could have been handle better by the defence mainly. I know oar didnt feature much but he didnt really do to much with the chances he did get and caused a foul that really wasn't needed in the first place; inexperience. It was a shame carle didnt get a run but if he's meant to get on that plane soon, he best be impressing in training :P Moore didnt really have a great game but it wasnt horrible either, but beachamp coming on you could see the defence settle a little more. Mcdonald and culina combined well to help vidosic onto the ball and holmans placement at the very end was well done. cahill in any other game probably would have been sent off and we did let loose on some dodgy tackles but other than that carney was pretty good on his side. Hopefully we won't be playing like this come the first game against germany but then again we wont be overwhelming favourites either and to be honest, i kept thinking to myself the longer the game kept going the more likely australia was going to get that goal this was a good kick about to get the nerves out of the way. bring on the danes and usa. Also ironic that you've obviously ever heard of a dignified winner. Shame you don't comment as your name indicates you should.
NZ Better of the first half, Oz better of the second. Congrats to you guys, in four - six weeks time you may just thank us for giving you a wakeup call :)
Hopefully now there won't be quite as many negative types about playing us more regularly. Good luck for the WC.

Moore didn't show any of his experiece in which he is suppossed to have a wealth of, Beauchamp looked light years ahead of him. Grella, Bresciano, Federici and Carney should be ashamed of themselves, their passing was woeful and wtf has Grella thinking when he took that halfway shot. Valeri and Jedinak looked very good. Vidosic wasn't fantastic in the first half but he looked much better in the second. Oar didn't make much of an impact, whenever he got the ball he was closed down fairly quickly. Mcdonald wasn't as bad as Grella and Bresc but he was still pretty bad. Brad Jones looked pretty solid, I think he should become the new number 2, Fed looked very nervous and unconvincing. Culina was a lot better on the right then in DM. I would've liked to see Carle get a run but oh well.
I have to say New Zealand definitely surprised me.
And Holman.... I always liked him :^o I could not stop laughing when he scored.

Davstar Player rating: tell me what you think!? Frederici: 5.5 looked shaky couldn’t do much about the goal, Marks gloves are hard ones to fill Jones: 6.5 Came on in the 2nd half made a goal saving stop from a NZ header Milligan: 6 Looked out of position but had a nice long range chance just wide of the goal Moore: 4 Responsibility is all his after allowing the ball to go over his head for the NZ goal Neill: 6.5 Solid at the back will be disappoint Australia conceded Carney: 6 Made some good runs lost the ball a lil to easy. Grella: 5 shocking tackle average delivery from the DM position, a highly ambitious shot on goal. Vidosic: 7.5 made good runs, a very well taken finish, earned himself a spot on the plane and imo is better and more skillful then Carle Cahill: 5.5 probably should have been red carded, had a good attempt on goal. You could tell he was holding back however and we know he can play much better than he did. Bresciano: 6 average deliveries weren’t highly effective didn’t do much wrong didn’t do much right. McDonald: 6 Had only one real chance which he did well with unlikely with the follow up might have just missed the plane was really needed to score. Holman: 8 usually I bag him out but tonight besides one poor pass he was pretty much spot on. When the writers for the Herald Sun had the title ready to print SOCCEROOS FLOP AGAINST NZ, Holman had good run and had a clam finish the reward the faith has put in him. Culina: 8.5 Magic on the ball in the 2nd half where was he in the 1st no idea but his 2nd half Heroics lead the Australian come back. A good repersentation of the A-leagues potential Ora: 5.5 was on the field for 15 min made one good run and got a yellow card Bech: 6.5 the new Melbourne heart man made Australia look far more solid in the back with him there over Moore What does everyone think about Davstars player ratings? Lots of opinions flying around about our Aus team, may as well throw mine in!
Stood out as terrible: - Grella (not just the tackle, but poor play - just like recent performances at club level) - Culina (in the first half) - Oar (clearly still behind him at this stage) - Verbeek (learn to use McDonald properly you twat)
Obviously a bit rusty: - Cahill (that sort of tackle in EPL seems to be treated similarly and probably got what it deserved IMO - a yellow) - Moore (I generally don't like him. He clearly needs to sharpen up a bit, but his experience did show). - Carney - Holman (despite the goal, he certainly handed the ball to NZ a couple of times) - Bresciano
Stand outs: - Neill (so damn reliable, just what a captain needs to be) - Vidosic (always liked him) - Culina (in the second half) - Beauchamp (good to see some more reliability back there)
I'm pretty embarrassed by Grella's tackle, that was a real shocker. Cahill's was just reckless, but Grella's was something else.

1. After Grella and Cahill's "tackles" its no wonder we couldn't get any bigger name team to play us. Who would risk crippling their players in a friendly?
2. Culina should be at right back, with the freedom to run up and down the right flank all day. Wilkshire in to the middle.
3. Moore- have a nice beer or two watching the Cup in front of the tele like the rest of us. Well past it.
4. Bresciano-too slow.
5. Carle aint goin'.
6. Holman-LEGEND.
Overall: If there isn't a massive turnaround in 3 weeks, it will be an embarrassing WC.

I can't wait for us to play the danes and the US. at least by then we can actually put down a team without experimenting and actually see what were really up against.
Hopefully new zealand learn from this and pick up their game, australia can play a lot better than this and if they can only come away from a game like this, then they need to be a lot more prepared when they face off against italy, paraguay and slovakia to have any chance of getting to the second round, let alone worry about how australia is going to go against germany.
Australia at full strength and as underdogs will be tough, no doubt!
I can see new zealand improving a lot more than their confed efforts last year.

absolutely disgusting performance from Australia
why oh why do we allow the opposition to play out from the back? part of the Dutch philosophy is to press high up, pressurize, and take care of the ball when we have it! in the first half, we just sat off the Kiwi's and allowed them to touch the ball and get comfortable, and consequently gain confidence from it. having said that, terrible defending from Moore and Milligan for the opening goal.
2nd half was better, we played positive football for about 15 minutes

This. did i miss something kevin???????? No, you hit the nail on the head (for once, probably by accident). Pim sees a multitude of possibilities, picks the best one, and sticks with it until it comes good. Like a roulette player always betting on the same number. So far, his luck is holding. A better coach would see a multitude of possibilities, pick the best one, and then change it to something else if the situation required. Like a roulette player who spreads his bets a bit. Neither approach is assured of success. Let's hope Pim gets lucky in SA, because he sure as hell is not gonna change anything. I think our starting 11 will be etched in stone and the other 12 players will be lucky to get any game time at all. Welcome to Pimland.

Grella should be cut from our squad for that piss poor effort, and Moore is surely a goner.

All I can say that I won't regret is that there are negatives and positives to be taken out of this game for Australia.

Ora: 5.5 was on the field for 15 min made one good run and got a yellow card Bech: 6.5 the new Melbourne heart man made Australia look far more solid in the back with him there over Moore
That's my 2 cent what do you guys think? I think you are way off beam blaming Moore for the NZ goal. He was positioning himself to head the cross but Smeltz flicked it on with a deft header that Moore would not even have got near if he hadn't been stooping for the header. The player at fault was Milligan. Why was he positioning himself outside the man he was marking? Kids stuff that. It is impossible to tell from that game whether Jones or Federici is the better one for No 2 keeper. Anyone can look OK when the defence is solid like it was in the second half.

Culina: 8.5 Magic on the ball in the 2nd half where was he in the 1st no idea but his 2nd half Heroics lead the Australian come back. A good repersentation of the A-leagues potential
But wait a minute. He came back home a year too early, he joined a crap club, he played terribly all last season, and then he couldn't even get game time but was only training with his old club in Europe. Surely you are not going to tell me that all the Culina knockers were... WRONG?????

Let's calm down, ladies. Hiddink's Socceroos struggled to put away Liechtenstein in '06.

Culina doesn't rate 8.5 - it's more like a generous 7.
I'm a fan of his for the National team, but he's played better games.
And Davstar, why would you give Gaz fodder to gloat - the smarmy c*nt draws fuel from wherever he can find it.

Everyone was surprised at Beauchamp's selection but I'd say he was one of the best defenders tonight, only surpassed by Neill.
Also, does anyone else think that Mile Jedinak is like Marouane Fellaini? :P

It looked to me that he was picking up the closer man to the goal because Moore was so far away. I blame Moore. Clever flick-on though.

Seems pretty clear who isn't going to be in the 23 now. Galekovic, North, Lowry, Holland, Oar, Milligan, Garcia and Carle?

Reason did see Culina flick the ball off the NZ defender to Vidosic? because i did and weather it was a fluke or pure skill not many players in the world can do that 8.5 i think its justified by that, i've seen a few Brazilans and Spanish players do it in Nations matches. That was class and it lead to a goal thats was Football is about! Edited by Davstar: 24/5/2010 10:37:44 PM
