Sack this bloke immediately. Australia is a part of the Asian Football Confederation whether you like it or not NZ.

The infectiously vibrant Asian Cup football tournament being contested in Australia is an encouraging portent for the Fifa U-20 World Cup New Zealand is to host this winter.

The tournament, held for the first time outside Asia, has been a raging success with crowds exceeding Football Federation Australia's wildest dreams, and contests capturing the imagination of the wider sporting public.

If they want to be a part of our league, how about showing us some respect? NZ HAVE to accept that we (i.e. Australia) have farked off from their shitty little corner of the world to play football in Asia.

If they want to continue to have an isolated South Pacific “local rivals” mentality, then fine, but we’re NOT a part of it.

That’s all.

In terms of tectonic plates, Australia is separate, but that's about it. Nowadays, Australia is essentially part of Asia, economically, culturally, etc.

Asia is bounded by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Indian Ocean to the south, the inland seas of the Atlantic Ocean—the Mediterranean and the Black—to the southwest, and Europe to the west. Asia is separated from North America to the northeast by the Bering Strait and from Australia to the southeast by the seas and straits connecting the Indian and Pacific oceans. The Isthmus of Suez unites Asia with Africa, and it is generally agreed that the Suez Canal forms the border between them. Two narrow straits, the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, separate Anatolia from the Balkan Peninsula.

Not economically? Six of Australia's top ten trading partners (and four of the top five) are Asian.

So we could be australian football Confederation. We win the cup every 4 years. Israels part of uefa. When it shouldn't be any more of a part of it then say... palestine. Why doesn't russia play in asia?
If you're talking about football and the Asian cup. .. were part of asia. If you're talking tectonic plates then we're not. Simple.

A two trading partnership doesn't make you part of a region. If we were part of Asia econically and politically, we would be part of ASEAN which we are not.

The reporter should of copied and pasted Wikipedia's entry:

"It is the first time that Australia has hosted the tournament, and it is also the first time the Asian Cup has been held outside the continent of Asia"

The Australian plate is in the process of colliding with the Asian plate and at some point in the future Asia and Australia will be joined, although many of us won't be alive when this happens.

Just to rile the troops up, here’s ex NZ International Danny Hay, this week, on what he thinks of the Socceroos. These are the same crew we're asked to share OUR league with.....

“Australia, for example, are devoid of the world-class talent that once littered their side, yet they are still considered one of the most competitive AFC outfits. The talent pool in this country has all the makings of a side under Hudson that could match them.”

Give me strength...](*,)

For what it's worth New Zealand has played six different Asian nations in friendlies the last 18 months. These are the results:

Saudi Arabia 0-1 New Zealand
UAE 2-0 New Zealand
Japan 4-2 New Zealand
Uzbekistan 3-1 New Zealand
China 1-1 New Zealand
Thailand 2-0 New Zealand

Their other results in that period were twin thrashings by Mexico and scoreless draws against Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa. Actually, that win over Saudi is one of only two victories they have recorded over non-Oceania nations since their last WC appearance, the other was a win over Honduras almost three years ago.

This is very wishful thinking from the Kiwis.

This is very wishful thinking from the Kiwis.

And Australian has just as woeful record since there last world cup minus this Asian cup.

Lol. Yeah let's exclude the only competitive matches since the World Cup to gauge the quality of Australia.

For what it's worth New Zealand has played six different Asian nations in friendlies the last 18 months. These are the results:

Saudi Arabia 0-1 New Zealand
UAE 2-0 New Zealand
Japan 4-2 New Zealand
Uzbekistan 3-1 New Zealand
China 1-1 New Zealand
Thailand 2-0 New Zealand

Their other results in that period were twin thrashings by Mexico and scoreless draws against Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa. a) good work making three grammatical errors in one short sentence

b) with the exception of a very poor 2014, Australia's record since 2010 is:
2011 - Played 15, won 11, drew 3, lost 1
2012 - Played 13, won 7, drew 3, lost 3
2013 - Played 11, won 3, drew 3, lost 5

We have to play our WC qualifiers against decent opposition.

For what's it worth the Australian continental plate includes the island of New Guinea, part of which belongs to Indonesia, so at a stretch our continent shares a land border with Asia.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahul_Shelf

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_(continent)

I don't think the author of the article was having a dig with his statement, but for what it's worth I know plenty of Kiwis who can't hear the word Socceroo mentioned alongside Asia, AFC or any like words without launching into a massive whine about our membership of the confederation so I'll give my thoughts on why their position is irrational.

Firstly, parts of Asia are much closer to Australia than New Zealand is and indeed, as the links I shared above show, part of continental plate is even claimed as sovereign territory by an Asian nation.

Due to that proximity the Indigenous Australians of the North had frequent contact, trade, cultural exchange and even interbreeding occurring possibly for over 500 years.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makassan_contact_with_Australia

Obviously also the arrival of the Dingo, which even at the oldest estimates came to Australia some 10,000 years ago, tens of thousands of years after human settlement first occurred here, suggests there had been interaction between South East Asia and Australia long before the Makassans arrived.

In comparison, in the entirety of human history there had been no connection between Australia and New Zealand until a mere 200 years ago, when the sole link was forged by the mere fact we were both colonised by the same European country. Before that, there were no geological links, anthropological, environmental, cultural etc. To say that 200 years under common colonial masters should determine what region of the world Australia belongs to, negating all other history before it, is absurd and in a way rather racist. Indeed, if it's our Europeaness which demands that our ties with a more distant neighbour should outweigh those of the closer then really we should be joining New Zealand not in Oceania, but UEFA!

Ultimately, short of establishing a new confederation featuring just us and Papua New Guinea, there is no Confederation to which Australia can really be said to fully belong. But a number of factors clearly link us to Indonesia and thus Asia, much more strongly and for a far greater time than our links with NZ, so it's more reasonable to be part of the AFC than part of the OFC. The real question is - why is PNG part of the OFC?

In terms of tectonic plates, Australia is separate, but that's about it. Nowadays, Australia is essentially part of Asia, economically, culturally, etc.

In terms of tectonic plates, we share the plate with India.

What? You don't get it?

I think it really speaks to the current humanistic relationships interweaving with a poster 's uncontrollable emotions of this thread given the contextual overtones of the cyber-age setting.

There's one guy talking about what is to be Asian, he's talking in a language none of us can understand and really just flinging whatever shit he finds up his nose into unsuspecting and mindful person's laps, but really he's living so high up in a world of delusion that there is no gravity there and consequently he just floats away like a crack addict - hence the word 'dole' appears.

The whole thing is just bananas really.

They tried to join the AFC back in 1998 and were banned by the OFC for going behind there backs. And later on in 2000ish but it was more of a revote against the head of football (Who wanted to join Asia).

Israel were part of the AFC until 1974, then were 'conferdation-less' until 1991 when UEFA let them join them.

Australia, Israel, NZ, and Chinese Taipai were FIFA's 'what the fark do we do with them' in the 1980s

Steven Holloway: Asian Cup success bodes well for U-20 event
5:00 AM Tuesday Jan 27, 2015

The infectiously vibrant Asian Cup football tournament being contested in Australia is an encouraging portent for the Fifa U-20 World Cup New Zealand is to host this winter.

The tournament, held for the first time outside Asia, has been a raging success with crowds exceeding Football Federation Australia's wildest dreams, and contests capturing the imagination of the wider sporting public.
